George McShane was a more than capable batsman and exceedingly accurate left-arm bowler who played three Tests against England, one each in 1884-85, 1886-87 and 1887-88, without any success. In 1884-85 he umpired the fourth Test before making his Test debut in the fifth. After retiring from first-class cricket he became a curator in Melbourne, and while looking after the facilities St Kilda he became mentally ill and was admitted to an asylum, where he died aged 46.
