Dickie Dodds was an opening batsman who played 380 games for Essex between 1946 and 1959 although he had first played for the county during the war. In his 13 full seasons with the club he passed 1000 runs with his best return in the hot summer of 1947 when he scored 2147 runs at 38.33. A deeply religious man, he believed that the best way to glorify God was to play bright cricket and in the off season he worked for Moral Re-Armament, donating the entire proceeds from his benefit in 1957. In 1976 he published an autobiography, Hit Hard And Enjoy It.
