Norman Callaway joined Waverley in 1914 and made an immediate impression, and in February 1914 he scored 129 for NSW Colts, and he was already being talked of when he made his first-class debut a year later aged 18 years and two months. Arriving in the middle with the score on 17 for 3, he raced to his fifty in an hour, and he brought up his hundred with a straight six half-an-hour later. Resuming on the second day he became the second man to score a double-hundred on debut before he was caught via a rebound off the keeper's gloves for 207. He had batted for 214 minutes and hit 26 fours, and had been dropped five times. He played one more summer for Waverley before heading to France in 1916 with the 19th NSW Battalion AIF. He died during an attack on the Hindenberg Line in May 1917.
