Sydney Church of England Grammar School

Ben Salmon's greatest hour on a cricket field came as a 19-year-old schoolboy when he scored 385 for Sydney Church of England Grammar School against Sydney High School out of a total of 804. His innings contained one six and 48 fours, and he followed it up with 4 for 35 as SHS were dismissed for 78, losing by 726 runs.

Salmon played for his school aged 14 and enjoyed six seasons in the 1st XI, scoring 4128 runs at 63.60 and captaining them for three years. In 1922-23 he scored 208 and 225 in a school game and the following summer 223.

In his last year in the XI he only played four times as he was called up for a NSW trial game in which he scored 95. That earned him a first-class debut against Victoria (he made 31) and then later in the season he scored 68 and 94 against Queensland. It was seven years before he was asked to play again, performing reasonably in two outings, but that was that. In grade cricket he was a key part of the Mosman side which won their first premiership in 1929-30.

He only took one first-class wicket - he was only allowed three overs - but it was good one, Bill Woodfull caught and bowled for 147.
