Australia win by ten wickets and that's a hammering regardless of how tight the first two days were. Their unbeaten record at the Gabba extends further. A very fine finishing job done by Warner and Bancroft, especially impressive from the debutant. Plenty to ponder for England. They looked toothless in that second innings. How much damage will this have done? We'll find out next week in Adelaide.

George Dobell spots this: "Every member of Aussie team - and staff - shook hands with Bairstow at end... Don't think there's much to see here."

And here's a gem from Brydon Coverdale: "Warner & Bancroft have broken an 87-year-old Test record. This is the all-time highest unbeaten opening partnership in a successful Test chase."

I'll stay with you to bring the post-match reaction. scott: "This Gabba pitch reminds me of 2010 Ashes - it got easier to bat on as the match went on. England scored 500/1 in their second innings in that match." Might have been 517 for 1 the way those two were going!

Hari Haran: "When will the Switch Hit podcast be published ? Salivating at all the doomsday predictions that will be discussed on that!" Will be back later this week (Thursday)

Speaking to Test Match Special, Trevor Bayliss has said of the Bairstow incident: "No malice in it...These guys don't drink any more or less than any other team I've been involved in" At the presentation, Joe Root has said "a mountain has been made out of a molehill."

More from Bayliss: "From a batting point of view it's about making big scores, we need big hundreds. I thought we bowled pretty well, Broad and Anderson were outstanding. Smith is a top-class player and we made him work for his runs. We have to go back to the drawing board and see if there's anything different we can do. Overton will be thought, Mark Wood playing for the Lions today so will be interesting to see how he goes."

And he expands on the Bairstow situation: "Blown out of all proportion. A chance for the Australian team to bring it up on the field. The night in question was the first night we were here, no curfew that night. It's down to the individual player to make sensible decisions. Another stern talking to, disappointing that something like this comes up a few weeks after Bristol. Will be another stern talking to tonight. We've got to be very careful not to get ourselves in those situations."

Joe Root: "It's the chances we missed, 250 for 4 you want to get 400-plus. Then with the ball they were 80 for 4, seven down plenty behind. You want to take hold of those and get a lead. Think we played some excellent cricket, got to play it for a longer period of time. Steve made a big hundred, that was probably the difference. Think that's a positive for our bowling attack, we had some plans that came off, but have to take our chances. We showed great skill, made them work hard for runs. Most of the guys played the short ball well, pretty clear what work needs to be ready for the next game. Mo's finger has been a bit uncomfortable but hopefully he'll be fine."

Here's Steve Smith: "First Test of an Ashes is very important, there was a bit of pressure but really pleased with how we played. Think we've made our intentions on our plans to tail, they won't get may pitched, although may have to adjust things at Adelaide. All the top six are in good form, sometimes you miss out. Was nice to get a partnership with Pat Cummins. It meant a lot [the hundred], I really had to dig deep. It was tough, my slowest best, but one of my best. Cameron looked very good, had good plans, played very straight. The partnership with David was magnificent."

On Bairstow: "Banners doesn't think much of it, all good." So maybe we can soon draw a line under all that? We'll see.

On that note I'm going to wrap things up. Many thanks for all your comments over the last few days. We'll be back for the second Test in Adelaide. But, for now, from Gnasher and Miller it's goodbye.
