Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
South Africa A took charge of their four-day game against Sri Lanka A in Durban, first through their bowlers who ripped through the visitors' batting and then consolidated the advantage through a quick 78 from opener Dean Elgar.
South Africa chose to field and immediately had Sri Lanka in trouble as fast bowler Rory Kleinveldt, in his first match since admitting to using a banned substance earlier this year, sliced through the top order. Opener Dilruwan Perera fell in the third over, and the experienced Chamara Silva followed soon after. The captain Dimuth Karunaratne was the third of Kleinveldt's victims, trapped lbw after a flurry of early boundaries.
The wickets continued to tumble and Sri Lanka were headed for humiliation at 117 for 9, but then put together the highest partnership of the innings as Kosala Kulasekara, who has played a Test and some ODIs for Sri Lanka over the past year, and Malinda Pushpakumara put on 51.
The fall of wickets was less frequent when South Africa batted. Kulasekara removed Stiaan van Zyl early, and Rilee Rossouw edged to second slip for 13, but there were no more wickets in the 19 overs until stumps. Elgar and captain Faf du Plessis put on 83 runs in an unbroken stand as South Africa ended the day only 29 behind, with eight wickets in hand.
