West Indies vs Bangladesh, 1st Test at Kingstown, , Jul 09 2009 - Ball by Ball Commentary

Best indicated with his bat that he may have got an inside edge but it makes no difference to the outcome now. Bangladesh are jubilant, and have won their first Test overseas. They won their first Test more than four years earlier, against Zimbabwe in Chittagong. The spinners won it for them today, with both Shakib and Mahmudullah proving lethal on a turning pitch. Credit to the West Indies tail for the way they batted with Bernard but 80 overs proved a little too many to negotiate on the final day. A massive setback this for West Indies; they were fielding a weakened team, and one just has to wait and see if this result will prompt a quicker solution to the existing impasse between the players and the board. As said earlier, this is Bangladesh's second Test win in their 60-Test, almost ten-year history since becoming a Test-playing nation. They set West Indies a challenging target, and their spinners ensured they took full advantage of the favourable conditions on offer to derail West Indies in their chase. They did face plenty of anxious moments as Bernard, and the tail, resisted superbly but some crafty captaincy from Shakib, who made the right changes at the right times, saw to it that a result was achieved with enough overs left in the day.

Reifer: "It was a rush. We've been practicing, it was a long game. It was nice to be back playing Test cricket. We are disappointed, we got starts in the first innings but didn't go on to get a big score. We are looking forward to the enxt Test, credit to Bangladesh for the way we played. The guys fought well, Bernard especially and even Omar Phillips. We'll put up a better performance in the next game. The first time I saw Kemar Roach, I knew he would play for West Indies. He bowled especially well with the new ball, and even today. We are hoping for some more grass on the wicket in the next Test, and more bounce hopefully. We have to get there and fight hard. You will have to ask the chairman if it's going to be the same squad for the next Test."

Mortaza: "Special thanks to Shakib for handling the team very well. Mahmudullah bowled very well too. We had initially thought of batting until lunch but we lost quick wickets. But the spinners bowled superbly, with one bowler short. We'll see the wicket and decide about the team for the next game."

Tamim Iqbal, a little surprisingly, is the Man of the Match: "Winning a Test means a lot to us. It was a flat wicket, and if you keep concentrating hard it's easy to get runs. I'm 21 and hopefully there's a lot more to come. Batting 240 balls - the most I've played in an innings - helped me a lot, and will give me confidence for the future."
