Charl Langeveldt's hat-trick rocked the Easterns Titans top-order and lead the Western Cape Cobras to a 60-run win in their Standard Bank Pro20 match at SuperSport Park in Centurion.
Langeveldt's high-quality pace bowling cost the Titans any chance of chasing down a target of 166 and their unbeaten record as they crashed to 9 for 4. The drama began with the first ball of Langeveldt's second over as a fast away-swinger raced past Roelof van der Merwe, who was swinging to leg, and took out his off stump.
Langeveldt (3 for 19) removed Faf du Plessis' off-stump with a similar delivery next ball and then dismissed Farhaan Behardien with the help of wicketkeeper Ryan Canning for the second Standard Bank Pro20 hat-trick. Titans paceman Ethy Mbhalati took the first last weekend.
The Titans lifted their heads briefly with the addition of 34 runs between Gulam Bodi (18) and Albie Morkel, but the home side were always on a hiding for nothing. Morkel played some top-class strokes in his 28 off 25 balls before an ill-fated attempt to hit out saw him caught off Tyron Henderson.
Heino Kuhn scored a run-a-ball 24, but the Cobras were home and dry long before his lofted drive off a Con de Lange full toss nestled safely in Langeveldt's hands at long-off. The Cobras' score of 165 for 5, after being sent in to bat, was inspired by a 91-run third-wicket stand, off 66 balls, between Andrew Puttick and Henry Davids. Davids (57) was in full cry almost from the start of his innings, swinging his way to a 38-ball half-century with four fours and a six. Puttick sailed to 59 off 44 balls and batted with the freedom that has marked him out as a special talent.
Herschelle Gibbs did not last long, caught in the gully for a duck, giving Mbhalati two wickets in the over. Rory Kleinveldt clubbed a ferocious 20 not out at the death, but it was Langeveldt who was waiting in the wings to wreck the Titans' hopes.
Dolphins 132 for 6 (Watson 35) beat Zimbabwe 131 for 8 (Taylor 55) by six wickets
Scorecard
Pierre de Bruyn and Johann Louw smashed the Dolphins to a four-wicket win over Zimbabwe in a Standard Bank Pro20 match in Durban.
The Dolphins needed 30 to win going into the last three overs, and de Bruyn and Louw hammered 21 off what became the last eight balls of the match to bring it home in style. de Bruyn scored 22 not out off 11 balls, while Louw was unbeaten on nine.
Brendan Taylor's 55 was more than double the next best effort in Zimbabwe's total of 131 for eight. The Dolphins fell behind the required run-rate, but de Bruyn and Louw helped them recover to a reply of 132 for six in 19.2 overs.
Jon Kent and Daryn Smit shared six wickets to restrict the Zimbabweans to their mediocre total. Kent, the medium-pacer, took 3 for 36 in the top half of the order and legspinner Smit ripped through the tail to claim 3 for 19.
Zimbabwe's batsmen floundered in the face of the Dolphins' rasping bowling, but they were aided by the three catches the home side dropped in the field. Taylor powered the innings onward with his blistering 55 off 36 balls with four fours and two sixes.
But he found support hard to come by. Chamu Chibhabha's 24 was the best of the rest, and the 58 that Taylor and Chibhabha shared for the fourth wicket was Zimbabwe's highest stand. Taylor was dismissed in the 18th over when he heaved a delivery from Smit down the throat of Imraan Khan at deep cover.
Doug Watson (35) and Ahmed Amla (22) kept the Dolphins in the hunt in the first half of their innings, but as the end approached the Zimbabweans were well on top. And when Keith Dabengwa bowled Kyle Smit (18) with the last ball of the 18th over, the visitors looked home and dry. But up stepped de Bruyn and Louw to turn impending defeat into rousing victory.
