Brett Dorey took out his frustration at missing a spot in Australia's touring squad of South Africa by teaming up with Steve Magoffin to push New South Wales to 7 for 77 in reply to Western Australia's 9 for 508 declared. Dorey, who was cut from the VB Series squad for the third final so he could play in this match, lost his spot to Queensland's Mitchell Johnson today, but he delivered a fine response to the disappointment with 3 for 14 from nine overs as the Warriors controlled the game after two days.
Magoffin collected 3 for 12, including two wickets before tea as the Blues were dropped to 3 for 6, and he removed Dominic Thornely for 7 after the break. Dorey then added Aaron O'Brien and Grant Lambert to his earlier dismissal of Matthew Phelps. Phil Jaques, who was also overlooked for the tour, was an opening-over casualty, caught in the slips by Chris Rogers, and New South Wales happily accepted a bad-light offering to end a dismal day.
Marcus North set up the Warriors' first-innings with 151 and he was joined by a surging Luke Ronchi, who collected 100 at a run-a-ball to confirm his promise two games after replacing the retired Ryan Campbell. It was Ronchi's maiden first-class century and he blasted four sixes and 13 fours to enhance the reputation of swashbuckling Western Australian wicketkeepers.
Becalmed on 98 for almost half an hour, North moved patiently towards three figures for the first time this season, and he faced 308 balls and took 20 fours and a six before Justin Langer's declaration. The offspinner Jason Krejza and medium-pacer Grant Lambert each took three wickets while Stuart MacGill managed only the tail-end dismissals of Magoffin and Dorey.
