Scorecard
Nic Maddinson confirmed that he will be a player to watch over the next couple of years after striking his second first-class century at the age of 18. Maddinson batted throughout the day as New South Wales moved to 6 for 286 at Sydney's Blacktown Oval, where Queensland's Chris Swan was the best of the bowlers with four wickets.
Maddinson finished unbeaten on 130 and had support from Nathan Hauritz on 6, after Peter Nevill (69) was the other major contributor. A young opener who turns 19 on Tuesday, Maddinson had some luck early in his innings when he played the ball on to his stumps without knocking the bails off, while he also edged through the slips.
But he made the most of his opportunities and brought up his century with a cover-driven boundary off Luke Feldman, adding to the 113 he made on debut in Adelaide in November. The bigger names in the New South Wales line-up couldn't match Maddinson; Usman Khawaja made 21 and the former Test opener Phil Jaques was caught behind early for 16.
The wicketkeeper Nevill, who is fresh from a Sheffield Shield century, struck two sixes in his innings before becoming one of Swan's victims. Swan had 4 for 55 at stumps, making him the leading wicket taker in the competition this summer.
