Wicketkeeper Peter Nevill led New South Wales' fightback against Tasmania in Canberra, but Tasmania were still in control of the contest by the close. NSW began the day reeling at 146 for 8, still 246 behind Tasmania's first-innings score of 392. But Nevill battled on, reaching his century, adding 90 with captain Ben Rohrer, who batted at No.10 and chipped in with 33. Seamer Josh Hazlewood also gave Nevill company for a further 28 runs before the innings closed on 264, Nevill remaining unbeaten.

Tasmania gained a first-innings lead of 128 and ensured they reached a dominant position by the close. Openers Steve Cazzulino and Ed Cowan made merry, hitting hundreds and adding 272 in just 54 overs before declaring. Cowan's been in sparkling form this tournament and he scored his third ton in as many games, finishing on 145 off 159 balls, striking 21 fours. Hazlewood was taken for runs, conceding 70 in his nine overs. Set a target of 401, NSW were 13 without loss at stumps.
