Scorecard
Ricky Ponting scored his first century of the summer, his unbeaten 162 leading Tasmania to a commanding total at the MCG, before the visitors' bowlers consolidated the advantage by dismissing Victoria's top-order for cheap.
Tasmania began the second day on 3 for 315, with Ponting on 89. He went on to bring up his 78th first-class century off 144 balls, and hit 20 fours and a six during his unbeaten 162, an innings that lasted nearly six hours. He led Tasmania to 5 for 439 and they declared half an hour after lunch.
Victoria lost Rob Quiney for 5 - caught behind off Jackson Bird - early in their reply. They had a half-century stand for the second wicket between Chris Rogers and Cameron White, but Adam Maher broke that when he had Rogers caught on the leg-side boundary. David Hussey and White fell in the space of three runs to leave the hosts in trouble at 4 for 106. Bird ended the day with 2 for 35, while James Faulkner had returns of 1 for 28 in ten overs.
