The Heat hold their nerve. They dropped some catches in the field but in the clutch moments they executed their plan with the ball to defend a big total.

The game was set up with the bat by a fabulous opening stand between Peirson and McCullum. Alex Ross' clean striking tipped the total beyond 200.

The Strikers bettered the Heat with their opening stand thanks to devastating half-centuries from Dunk and Weatherald but they could not find enough boundaries late. Samuel Badree's maiden to Travis Head was critical and it left too much for Brad Hodge to do. Great game of cricket.

Brendon McCullum has been named Man of the Match for his innings and also his captaincy.

McCullum: "I feel very fortunate to get it. We said just keep trying to take wickets and feel like you're in front of the game."

McCullum on Badree's maiden: "(It was) huge, absolutely massive."

McCullum on Ross' innings: "His innings was a really mature innings. He gave himself some time, got used to the conditions and was devastating at the back end. I thought he should've been Man of the Match."

A great win for the Heat to open their campaign.

They don't play again until next Wednesday against the Thunder. The Strikers head to Perth on Friday to face the Scorchers.

That's it from Adelaide tonight. Join us tomorrow for the clash between the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Thunder at Docklands in Melbourne.

Steketee to Jordan, OUT, A wicket to finish it!! Jordan lofts this high wide of mid off and McCullum runs back and pouches the catch! Well bowled Steketee

CJ Jordan c McCullum b Steketee 1 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Great bowling from Steketee

Steketee to Hodge, 1 run, slower ball driven along the ground to deep cover! That should do it
Steketee to Hodge, 2 runs, great save on the rope by Swepson. It was sliced behind point and nearly went for four but a good save.
Steketee to Jordan, 1 run, great slower ball wide of off, and he reaches out and bunts it to mid off

Chris Jordan takes guard. 15 needed off 4 balls

Steketee to Lehmann, OUT, Another brilliant yorker! 141kph fired at leg stump, Lehmann gave himself room but was beaten for pace and leg stump lit up like a Christmas tree!

JS Lehmann b Steketee 0 (5m 1b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Steketee to Hodge, 1 run, Dropped at mid off! Slower ball full toss, slapped in the air to mid off and McCullum diving forward and to his right drops the catch! He would normally take that. But he saves three
