all over, and what a mismatch! Joshi mistimes a pull to wide long-off and Kolkata win by 140 runs!
KKR vs RCB, 1st match at Bengaluru, IPL, Apr 18 2008 - Match Result
Thats a crushing win in game one of the IPL. Kolkata rode into town and through the night, proving a royal pain for the home side. A great win and Kolkata appear the team to beat. They bat deep, they have an explosive top order, and their bowlers look good too. Shah Rukh Khan is mightily pleased.
This match was over by the time Brendon McCullum thumped Kolkata to 222 for 3. A most spectacular effort from him - 158 not out, the highest score in Twenty20 cricket. No other option for Man of the Match.
Bangalore offered no fight. Only Praveen Kumar made it to double figures. Ajit Agarkar took three wickets. A massive win to kick-start this tournament.
Have the crowd been entertained? Yes. Was the cricket competitive? From one side, yes.
Now for some post-match fluff. Dravid says McCullum's innings was the defining point - duh - and hopes Bangalore can improve in their upcoming fixtures. Ganguly credits some outstanding cricket as key tonight. Says he's never seen such batting on this type of track.
McCullum comes up to collect his award. Is pleased to have made an impression. Loves the excitement so far. Looks forward to more. Doesn't credit any game plan as such. It all just came together, he feels.
So with that game one comes to an end. It was entertaining stuff.
Thats all from us today, but do come back tomorrow, April 19, for two IPL games: Kings XI Punjab v Chennai Super Kings at Mohali (17:00 local, 11:30 GMT) and Delhi Daredevils v Rajasthan Royals at Delhi (20:30 local, 15:00 GMT). I'll be bulletining the first and handling ball-by-ball commentary for the second. Do join me.
Until then, this is Jamie Alter signing off on behalf of all of us at Cricinfo. Cheers!
Still a good crowd in the ground, though I suppose the alcohol being served is a big reason.
poor ball, very wide outside off stump and another freebie to the total
shorter one jags in and he keeps it out towards cover, well bowled
reaches out and clips this one wide of midwicket for more runs
slides well down leg stump, Praveen calls for the leg-bye and gets it
full on off stump and he flicks with an inside-edge onto the pads to fine leg
Two slips in place
reaches out to cut and escapes with an inside-edge past leg stump
pitches outside leg and raps Joshi's pads, Rauf doesn't even budge
Ishant runs in and pulls out near the stumps, his run-up disturbed
very wide outside off, carries on past the bat and wide is duly called
Ganguly calls on Ishant to finish it off. He has taken 1 for 4 from two overs.
good shot! Too full and he drives powerfully over wide long-on for six, he's not giving up on this, is Praveen
straight again, back of a length, Praveen comes forward and pushes to cover
slips down and catches him outside the line of leg stump
dropped! By Ponting! Praveen gets a leading edge that spirals up in the air and Ponting, always struggling as he runs behind, fails to hold on
worked off the pads down to fine leg to get off the mark
Sunil Joshi is the last man in.
cleaned up, Zaheer missing the line completely for off stump to be pegged back and Ganguly runs off in celebration and Ponting runs towards him and the two embrace ... now thats a sight, eh?
gets back and pushes this one into the covers for a single
makes room and the ball follows him, nipping away past the bat
bouncer over middle and leg, forcing him down on his haunches
short of a length, he gets up and punches wide of point for one
better stuff, straight on the stumps, pushed to mid-on this time
