Maharashtra all but through to quarterfinals

A round-up of the fourth day's play of the eighth-round Group C games of the Ranji Trophy 2013-14

Maharashtra 488 for 6 dec (Khadiwale 92, Bawne 138*) and 63 for 0 (Motwani 33*) beat Himachal Pradesh 228 (Fallah 3-48) and 319 (Dogra 62, Rishi Dhawan 60, Sanklecha 3-70) by 10 wickets
Scorecard
Maharashtra moved to the top of the Group C table and all but booked themselves a place in the quarterfinals after beating Himachal Pradesh by 10 wickets in Pune. Maharashtra will only need a point from their last group fixture, an away game at Assam, to confirm qualification. Even if they lose, they will still go through unless both Jammu and Kashmir and Goa win their last group fixtures, and even then Goa will need a bonus point.
The result ruled HP out of the race. A draw would have keep them alive, just about, and that result was still possible when they began the day 98 for 1, needing 162 more to make Maharashtra bat again. They achieved that, but set the hosts just 60 to win. The seamers did most of the damage, with Samad Fallah, Anupam Sanklecha and Shrikant Mundhe sharing seven wickets.
Three HP batsmen made half-centuries, but no one made more than Rishi Dhawan's 60, and HP were all out just 58.1 overs into the day, leaving Maharashtra ample time to get to their target. They only needed 13.1 overs, and both Harshad Khadiwale and Rohit Motwani stayed unbeaten to ensure their side what might prove an important bonus point.
Goa 242 (Kamat 96, Niyas 6-82) and 183 for 7 (Gadekar 52*, Parameswaran 2-23) beat Kerala 273 (Manoharan 87, Surendran 84) and 147 (Jakati 4-44, Yadav 3-26) by three wickets
Scorecard
Harshad Gadekar's second first-class fifty led Goa to a three-wicket win over Kerala in Porvorim, keeping the side's hopes of reaching the knockouts alive.
Goa started the day needing 97 runs to bring up their third win of the season, but they had lost quick wickets during their chase of 179 and were 82 for 5, with their top-order batsmen all back in the pavilion.
They suffered another blow in the morning when Keenan Vaz was trapped lbw by Nizar Niyas just four overs into the day. Gadekar, however, led the recovery by batting out the next 25 overs with Ravikant Shukla, and the pair's seventh-wicket association yielded 86 runs.
Shukla eventually fell for 28, having spent more than two hours at the crease, but Gadekar took the team home with an unbeaten 57 that included 10 fours, as well as a six that sealed the win. Prasanth Parameswaran was the pick of Kerala's bowlers and finished with 2 for 23.
Hyderabad 514 for 8 dec (Ravi Teja 179, Vihari 109) drew with Jammu & Kashmir 299 (Hardeep 78, Ravi Kiran 5-53) and 127 for 1 (Haroon 52*)
Scorecard
The match between Jammu & Kashmir and Hyderabad at the Gandhi Memorial Science College Ground ended in a draw, leaving the race for a quarter-final spot in Group C wide open.
Hyderabad, who started at 198 for 6, batted 38 overs on day four before being bundled out for 299, giving Hyderabad a 215-run first-innings lead and by extension, three points. Seamer Ravi Kiran was the pick of Hyderabad's bowlers, finishing with 5 for 53.
Forced to follow on, J&K managed 127 for 1 in their second innings. Wicketkeeper Obaid Haroon was unbeaten on 52, but their innings was marred by an injury to Bandeep Singh who withdrew from the game after 20 overs.
