Scorecard
Accurate bowling and torrential rain combined to give Kent victory in their Friends Provident t20 Cup clash against Glamorgan at Cardiff by 14 runs under the Duckworth-Lewis method. Despite a quickfire half-century from Mark Cosgrove Glamorgan finished their disappointing campaign with a 10th defeat out of 16 games.
After being asked to bat first Kent made a more than competitive 158 for 9 in their 20 overs. But in reply Glamorgan reached 95 for 3 in 14.4 overs before the heavy rain brought an end to the contest.
Under the D/L method the Welsh county had needed to be at 109 at that stage but were 14 runs short with Simon Cook (1 for 20) and James Tredwell (1 for 21) the pick of the Kent bowlers.
Kent had scrambled to a decent score despite no one batsman taking Glamorgan's attack apart. Joe Denly cracked a breezy 30, including a consecutive six and four off paceman Shaun Tait, despite losing fellow opener James Hockley to the final ball of the first over of the innings.
Denly ensured Kent reached 40 for 1 off the opening four overs. But the visitors then proceeded to lose wickets at regular intervals. Martin van Jaarsveld was stumped, Denly was bowled middle stump by Tait and Geraint Jones was run out as Kent subsided from 42 for 1 to 50 for 4.
Azhar Mahmood holed out to midwicket to make it 72 for 5 but there were useful contributions from Darren Stevens, who hit Croft for a successive six and four, Alex Blake and Tredwell, who took Kent past 150 at the end.
In reply Cosgrove and Will Bragg, on t20 debut, gave Glamorgan a good platform from which to build. Bragg holed out to long off to leave Glamorgan 43 for 1 in the eighth over, but with Cosgrove and Tom Maynard together there was still hope for the home support heir side would finish the tournament with a flourish.
But when Cosgrove, who reached 50 from 39 balls with two sixes and three fours, and Maynard were out in the space of two overs Glamorgan's chances diminished until the heavy rain confirmed Kent's victory.
