Scorecard
Jonny Bairstow thrashed the first Twenty20 century at Chester-le-Street off only 58 balls as Yorkshire beat Durham by 49 runs.
In front of a crowd of 6,747 Bairstow hit six sixes and his second 50 came off 18 balls as the last eight overs produced 102 runs to take Yorkshire to 186 for 8.
The target seemed to induce panic in Durham as four of the top six mustered one between them. It was left to the strapping Australian, John Hastings, to spare their blushes as he followed up his three for 20 by hammering a 25-ball half-century.
After hitting four sixes he was bowled by Ryan Sidebottom for 62 in the 19th over and Durham were all out for 137 with two balls unused.
The only previous T20 centuries for Yorkshire were by overseas men, Ian Harvey and Herschelle Gibbs, while only Lancashire's Mal Loye had passed three figures against Durham, at Old Trafford in 2005.
With two overs of the innings left Bairstow was on 71 but he drove the first three balls of the 19th, bowled by offspinner Gareth Breese, over the rope at long-on. He then took a single and was on 90 with four balls left. An improvised shot off Chris Rushworth produced a four just wide of the wicketkeeper, followed by two to long-on before the fifth ball was pulled for six. He remained unbeaten on 102, while the next highest scorers were Alex Lees and Adil Rashid with 29.
Yorkshire left out skipper Andrew Gale, whose wife was about to give birth, and handed the reins to Aaron Finch. After being put in, he opened with Kane Williamson, back from New Zealand Test duty, but they scored only five between them. Both tried to hit Hastings to leg and skied leading edges into the off side, Finch departing for a second ball duck.
On a run-laden pitch Yorkshire were not well-placed at 84 for five after 12 overs, but Rashid hit two successive sixes off Usman Arshad in helping to add 64. Arshad conceded 22 in the 17th over and finished with none for 51 in four.
"Things haven't quite clicked recently and it's been quite frustrating, but this was just one of those nights when everything I tried came off," Bairstow said. "I was pleased with the way I struck the ball and found the right areas. It went through my mind to try for six sixes in Gareth Breese's last over after hitting the first three. But he bowled the last three balls well."
Durham's John Hastings said: ``Jonny played a fantastic innings, so all credit to him. We got him out second ball at Headingley during the week, but he was unstoppable tonight.
"It was a good pitch to bat on and I thought their total was only about 10 above par, but they bowled well up front and we never really got our run-chase going."
