You can argue if the tie was the best result in a game which ebbed and flowed. It was a rank bad final delivery from Malinga which gave India a lifeline. That apart, Sri Lanka fielded with intent and purpose. They affected direct hits, though that missed chance against Dhoni will haunt them.

Going back to the 30th over, it was scored as a five-ball over. Did the umpires miss out that one ball? It still is a mystery.

Here's the presentation.

Jayawardene: "When you have MS batting through it was always going to be tough. One ball four to get you back yourself. But 230 probably wasn't enough. We dropped catches and misses run-outs. You always back Malinga to do the job."

Dhoni is the Man of the Match: "I looked to stay till the end. If you have a decent partnership you can stick it out. Malings is very difficult to hit so we were looking to target Mathews. (The last hit) was a bit difficult here, but in India that would have been two bounces and four. When you need 10 or 12 in the last over your heart rate will always be up."

That ends the first ever tie between India and Sri Lanka in one-dayers. Plenty to sort out for both sides. The common link is the batting. Sri Lanka had a mixed day in the field - brilliance interspersed with bloopers.

India's middle order needs to step up. Can't leave it to Captain Cool over and over again.

Jay: "How long will Dhoni continue this approach of devouring so many balls? It is all well and good for him if India win or tie but he puts undue pressure on his partners at the other end. People at the other end should feel aggrieved with Dhoni as they had to take risks and got out because of Dhoni."

With that, we'll take leave of you. Thanks again for joining us. We'll see you again soon. Cheers!

Malinga to Dhoni, 3 runs

a tie! Malinga fires it full and wide and Dhoni reaches out and practically on one leg scoops it over extra cover, Senanayake at sweeper cover cuts it off and parries it to Kulasekara who fires the throw, that gives India enough time to take three, the players check to see if the batsmen ran one run short, but in the end it was all good

Yadav walks in. Dhoni has to deposit this...somewhere. Who says ODIs are dead??

W
Malinga to Vinay, OUT

we have a run-out now! Vinay makes room and squirts it out to mid-off and sets off, Mathews under-arms it straight at the stumps and there's no need for the 3rd umpire

Vinay Kumar run out (Mathews) 1 (2b 0x4 0x6 7m) SR: 50

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 run

Sri Lanka blow a chance to get Dhoni run-out! He swings it straight to midwicket and the throw is flat and quick to Malinga, he fumbles!

Malinga to Dhoni, 1 run

fires it full and quick and Dhoni has a swipe and gets an inside edge onto the pad and the ball lobs to the off side, now Vinay has the strike

Many in the deep

2
Malinga to Dhoni, 2 runs

Excellent running! Dhoni jams out a yorker down to long-on and really pushes Vinay, Vinay dives and makes his ground

Another horribly tense match!

4
Angelo Mathews to Dhoni, FOUR runs

take that! Dhoni plays a booming cross-court whack over midwicket, that just whistled to the boundary and that's his fifty!

48.4
W
Angelo Mathews to Pathan, OUT

we have another twist here! Pathan swings and the ball drops on the pitch, he was uncertain whether to run or not but Dhoni was already at the other end, Irfan had to sacrifice his wicket and Angelo had enough time to take aim and hit

Irfan Pathan run out (Mathews) 8 (5b 0x4 1x6 7m) SR: 160

Angelo Mathews to Pathan, (no ball) SIX runs

the full toss! Eerily similar to the previous game, he clubs that over deep square leg and it's a no-ball as well!

Angelo Mathews to Dhoni, 1 run

full and wide outside off and he bashes it along the ground straight to sweeper cover

48.2
Angelo Mathews to Dhoni, no run

comes round the wicket and he sprays it full outside off and Dhoni has a wild swish and misses, he could have swatted ten flies in one shot with that hit

Mahela's busy restructuring the field here

Angelo Mathews to Pathan, 1 run

full outside off and he mistimes the slash down to extra cover, just drops short of the fielder

48.1
1w
Angelo Mathews to Pathan, 1 wide

bonus for India, that was a full toss very wide of the off stump and pathan couldn't make contact on the slash, close call but the umpire penalises him

Mahela and Angelo discuss. Angelo it will be to bowl the penultimate over.

Ramakrishna: "That drop costed India two additional balls which could have potentially got runs with Dhoni crossing over."

More pressure on Dhoni. Irfan comes in. India bat deep today. Mid-on's up

47.4
W
Malinga to Ashwin, OUT

well that drop didn't cost anything! Yet another slower ball and Ashwin makes room to play the spooned extra cover drive, ends up chipping it straight to extra cover, clever change of pace again does the trick

good fielding by Ashwin, he gets in the way of a firm straight drive, deflects to the on side
