The permutations can wait awhile longer. India's fates still rest in their own hands, though at the moment they are a distant third in this tournament. We'll be back for the fun on Sunday. Before you leave, here is the match report by Brydon Coverdale. We'll soon have a lot more analysis and comment from the game up on the site. On behalf of the gang, this is Nitin Sundar signing out. Cheers!

"The first task for India is to somehow win the toss and bat first for a change, that may change the fortunes as well." Prasanna are you saying Sehwag should replace Dhoni as captain?

Presentations.

Mahela is the Man of the Match: "I probably got more of the strike than Dilly, and it was one of those days when most of your shots went to the gaps. One side of the ground is smaller, so it was a tough ground to defend on. The youngsters are learning a lot from these games. We are top of the table, but we still need to do a lot of hard work."

Clarke: "Unfortunately we couldn't get over the line, but full credit to Sri Lanka. Our execution with the ball wasn't good. The top four could do better. SL showed tonight that if you hang in, you can take it home. I am still a bit stiff in the back, but I will be fine. Big game for us against India in Sydney."

Mahela showed the way, but the youngsters followed it to do it for Sri Lanka. There is after all a way for old and young to combine and bring home the results in ODI cricket. Are India watching?

The points table begins to look very interesting now. All three teams have two games to go. And all of them (including India) have a chance to make the finals. India will need to win both games to make the final. If they do pull that off (though their current form suggests it would be a tall order), SL and Aus will be fighting for the other spot in the final when they meet.

For now though, Sri Lanka are the class of the field. They seem to have just the sort of combination to click in these conditions. Most importantly, they have three high-quality fast bowling allrounders.

Lee to Kulasekara, FOUR runs

Sri Lanka are on top of the table! Take that says Kula. He stays beside the line to a length ball and cracks it through the covers for four. Sri Lanka have been undefeated four games in a row, and I daresay they look the best side in this tournament.

Lee to Perera, 1 run

full ball on the pads, Thisara whips it behind square and they get a single ... Thisara wants a second, but they have to settle for one.

Three to win off the last over. Christian's limitations were shown up in that over. Lee for the 50th.

he gets a single now, squeezes it away to the leg side and keeps strike. 14 off the over, the over that has probably lose it for Australia.

Christian to Perera, SIX runs

Thisara!!! Sri Lanka are roaring home after a six followed by a four. Thisara plants the front foot across, gets clean under the length ball and bombards it deep over the midwicket boundary for a six. Sri Lanka can't possibly lose from here.

Christian to Perera, FOUR runs

Thisara doesn't need two hands to get the boundary. Full length slower ball on the leg stump line, he was lining up the loft over the leg side, but the ball came on after he was into the stroke. No matter. The top hand came off, he continued with the swing and ended up slapping it square rather than through midwicket.

Here comes Kula. Australia are right back in with these timely strikes. 14 off 9. A six now changes the equation completely.

Christian to Angelo Mathews, OUT

Gone! Mathews has perished trying another big shot. He was trying to haul the length ball over the extra cover area, but the slower ball hoodwinked him into another miscue. It landed in long-off's hands as he came across.

Christian to Angelo Mathews, 2 runs

Mathews is holing out straight down the throats of the gaps in the outfield! Juicy full toss on the pads, Mathews tries to cart it over midwicket, but doesn't time it well enough. He mistimes it sufficiently for it to land short of long-on and midwicket who were converging.

16 off 11...

Christian to Perera, 1 leg bye

near perfect yorker, lands outside leg and hits the pad as Perera misses the heave to leg. He was through the shot too early. Leg bye taken.

Christian for the 49th over.

Lee to Angelo Mathews, no run

another dot ball! Mathews is unable to get a yorker away and Lee moves across to field. He even under-arms a throw at Thisara's end as he backs up too far. But Thisara is in, and Lee misses.

47.5
Lee to Angelo Mathews, no run

near yorker, Mathews can't get it away for a single. Lee collects and thinks of throwing at the keeper's end. He resists and just glares!

full toss from Lee, Sri Lanka are running like professional sprinters here! Thisara makes Forrest sweat in the deep after Mathews drove into the covers. He charged back for the second and made it easy.

Lee to Perera, 2 runs

another leading edge. Thisara tries to nudge to leg from outside off and the ball skims off the edge towards third man. Ohho, he charges back for the second and puts the dive in to beat Harris' throw to the keeper. He's in.

Harris to Perera, FOUR runs

Thisara has put the cheek in cheeky shot-making. He shuffles across the stumps, gets under a low Harris full toss and laps it off the middle of the bat behind square leg. He didn't try to go over the fielder at short fine-leg, and instead just went well outside his range. Much squarer than the shot Thirimanne was attempting.

Harris to Angelo Mathews, 1 run

Mathews nearly holes out! He tries to get under the length and shovel Harris over long-on, and nearly picked out the fielder. It landed some yards in front of him eventually.

low full toss now, Thisara whips it to midwicket and they might have contemplated two. Mathews isn't interested.
