Scorecard summary
Sri Lanka 318/7(50 overs)
England 285/10(48.4 overs)

Well, that wraps up another dire day for England and it is hard to see a way out of this rut which has now seen them lose 14 out of their last 18 ODIs. Full credit to Sri Lanka who batted extremely well and then really turned the screw in the middle overs after England had made a confident start. But they were aided by another wretched bowling display from England. They came into this game with 49 wides in three games and added another 21 today – chip in the three no-balls and that’s an extra four overs and brings the margin of victory into single figures. It’s also worth noting that in Sri Lanka’s last four overs they added 50.

Join us on Saturday for the final match in this series where England have to try hard to avoid the humiliation of a series whitewash and we have to pretend it really matters.

From me, Martin Williamson, and Jenny Thompson, it’s goodnight. Don’t forget to relive the game courtesy of Will Luke’s bulletin

Malinga to Plunkett, OUT

holed out to deep mid-off to end the match, although the contest was finished some time back. The delighted Sri Lankans leave the field to the whoops of their vocal supporters, but the stands are three-quarter empty as people have been drifting off for some time.

England can take some .. well, no solace actually … from the fact that although this is their sixth ODI defeat on the trot, they are some way short of their worst, 11 losses between October 2000 and August 2001

Kabir Ali pushes into the off, Fernando scurries across, picks up, turns and throws down the stumps with Ali not even in the frame Ali trudges off to contemplate a dismal day … 0 for 77 from 10 overs and a first-ball duck. He’s probably got a parking ticket as well.

straight and Dalrymple aims a big hit but misses and the ball takes his middle and off stumps. Dalrymple departs, one of the few England players to have emerged from today – and this series – with any credit
