Bangladesh, riding on Mashrafe Mortaza's unbeaten 20-ball 40, defeated Uganda by 21 runs in the fifth match of the Twenty20 Quadrangular tournament at Nairobi.

Chasing 146 to win, Uganda got off to a frenetic start when Roger Mukasa lofted Syed Rasel over long-off for a six off the first ball of the innings before mistiming the third to Farhad Reza at cover. Abdur Razzak, the left-arm spinner, kept it tight in the next over, with the only runs coming as leg-byes.

It got worse for Uganda when Lawrence Sematimba was stumped by Mushfiqur Rahim after missing a leg-side delivery from Rasel and Arthur Kyobe was run out to leave them at 31 for 3.

But captain Joel Olwenyi, coming in at No. 4, did not let the early wickets deter him and pounced on a short ball from Rasel to send it over over long-on. He then turned his attention to Mortaza, smacking him over deep-midwicket before flicking to fine leg. Nandi Patel hit two boundaries off Mohammad Ashraful's legspin in his 20-ball 21 before he was caught in the deep by Nadif Chowdhury off the same bowler.

Uganda's hopes were further dented by Ashraful when he dismissed Olwenyi, whose attempted slog was caught by Reza at mid-off, for 46 off 36 balls with three fours and two sixes.

Martin Ondeko and Kenneth Kamyuka were tied down by some disciplined bowling, taking singles and twos when big hits were required. Mortaza then removed Kamyuka and Jeremy Kibukamusoke in the 19th over and Ondeko's three fours in the final over were a little too late.

Earlier,a middle-order slump almost ruined Bangladesh's decision to bat first. Nazimuddin sent the first ball he faced to the point boundary to signal an aggressive start to the innings and Tamim Iqbal followed up an inside edge off Kamyuka with two identical drives through mid-off for four. Nazimuddin then hit a Charles Waiswa delivery over long-on before slashing Emmanuel Isaneez to the point boundary.

But Isaneez struck twice in quick succession to stall Bangladesh's progress; Nazimuddin was taken by Olwenyi at the edge of the long-on boundary, and Tamim was trapped in front after missing the line of the ball. Bangladesh then faltered while attempting to boost the run-rate. Ashraful was run out while trying to pick up a quick single while Aftab Ahmed and Alok Kapali holed out in the deep off Olwenyi.

However, Mortaza's quick-fire knock ensured that Bangladesh finished on a high. He pulled a short ball by Olwenyi for six over deep-midwicket before hitting a four and six off Kamyuka as 29 runs were scored in the last two overs.
