Tom Cooper showed New South Wales what they had missed with a superb hundred that drove South Australia to back-to-back FR Cup victories and a double bonus point that lifted them to fourth. Cooper, a 22-year-old former Australia Under-19 player, was poached by the Redbacks during the off-season and while the inexperienced Blues flopped to 112 in the 173-run defeat, Cooper starred by reaching three figures for the first time on the domestic scene.
Opening the batting, Cooper raced to 101 off 108 balls to put South Australia on track for a strong total of 2 for 285. He hit some crisp straight drives as part of his ten boundaries and worked the ball smartly as he lifted the side following the third-over loss of Michael Klinger.
What was also impressive was the way Cooper out-scored Younis Khan during their 128-run stand for the second wicket, with the experienced international adding only 29. Cooper appeared initially to be given not out to a Steven Smith lbw appeal, but the umpire John Ward changed his mind to end the impressive innings.
Callum Ferguson, Graham Manou and Daniel Christian ensured the Redbacks finished in a hurry with some excellent late hitting. Ferguson's 51 came from 57 deliveries while Manou (48 from 39) and Christian (32 from 17) put on 62 in the final 5.4 overs.
The last-placed New South Wales started brightly through David Warner, who sped to 31 in the seventh over, but the wickets had already started to tumble. Shaun Tait grabbed two in his return from a hamstring problem while Mark Cleary finished with 3 for 29 as the Blues were dismissed in 30.3 overs.
