Scorecard
Peter Forrest's first fifty-plus score of the summer in any format helped Queensland to a 110-run victory over New South Wales at the Gabba, where the Bulls also claimed a bonus point. Forrest made 62 and the acting captain Chris Hartley scored 50 as Queensland worked their way to 8 for 252 before Matthew Gale and Alister McDermott caused problems for the New South Wales batsmen in the chase.
Gale was Man of the Match for his 3 for 48, which included the key wickets of Brad Haddin, caught behind for 31, and Moises Henriques (4), caught at fine leg in the same over. Gale also had Ben Rohrer caught behind and effected a fine run-out off his own bowling when he collected the ball in his follow-through and under-armed it onto the stumps at the striker's end to find Peter Nevill short for 14.
That left New South Wales all but buried at 7 for 121, and McDermott cleaned up the tail. The evening dew made batting a little tougher for the Blues but the size of the victory was still surprisingly large, and the Bulls had Forrest, Hartley and Chris Lynn to thanks for their strong batting performance earlier in the day.
Usman Khawaja (33) and Hartley gave Queensland a solid start with a 64-run opening stand before Forrest joined Hartley a the fall of the second wicket. Forrest, who played 15 ODIs earlier this year, had slipped from the national selectors' thoughts after a disappointing start to the year - in his 12 previous innings for the Bulls this season across first-class and Ryobi Cup cricket, his top score had been 27 not out.
Forrest clubbed a few boundaries through and over the leg side and while it wasn't his most graceful innings, it was effective. He was eventually run out for 62 from 97 balls as the overs began to run out for the Bulls. Lynn's innings of 39 from 28 balls, including four sixes, was also impressive, considering he suffered a painful blow to the groin while batting, and was sent to hospital after his innings.
