Sussex's allround nous proved too strong for Somerset in their 38-run win at Taunton, in a match which featured the first referral to the third umpire by a player. Chris Adams, on 17 at the time, was struck on the pad by Peter Trego and the umpire, Jeremy Lloyds, raised his finger. Adams asked for the decision to be referred, which it was, but Lloyds' original judgement was upheld. Richard Montgomerie went on to a fine 125 in Sussex's 287, which was boosted by a rollicking 88 from Murray Goodwin, but Somerset got off to an encouraging start with Marcus Trescothick and Cameron White both reaching fifties. Their middle-order were less prolific though, with Robin Martin-Jenkins finishing with 4 for 30.
Kent gate-crashed Ireland's World Cup party with a 58-run win at Belfast, comprehensively beating the team who featured so promisingly in the Caribbean. That Kent reached 231 was due to Joe Denly's excellent 102 and his unbroken eighth-wicket stand of 99 with James Tredwell. Ireland were never in the game once reduced to 80 for 6, though Kevin O'Brien (36) and Kyle McCallan (45*) swung lustily toward the end.
Ravi Bopara swapped his England kit for the Essex jersey and picked up 3 for 16 in the process as Hampshire were routed for 75 at Chelmsford. Essex made 210 in their innings largely thanks to James Foster's unbeaten 69 but Hampshire lost 4 for 18 - Graham Napier doing the early damage - before Bopara struck with three quick wickets. Essex were home by 135 runs.
Tim Murtagh and Richard Johnson broke the back of Glamorgan's middle-order for Middlesex who sneaked past them by six runs in a close encounter at Lord's. Chasing 263 Glamorgan lost Nicky Peng and Alex Wharf early on, but were steadied by Matthew Eliiott's fifty. However, once he fell - stumped by David Nash attempting to charge Owais Shah - so did Glamorgan's run-rate. Ben Wright batted intelligently for his 61 but Glamorgan's final few runs were left to Nos. 9 and 10, neither of whom could manage it. Middlesex's total was led by Shah (56 from 53) and Jamie Dalrymple's run-a-ball 68.
Worcestershire's middle and lower order collapsed meekly chasing 232 as Leicestershire romped home by 42 runs at New Road. The home side were going along nicely at 139 for 4 with Ben Smith on 48, but his wicket prompted a slide from which they never recovered, losing 6 for 50. Jeremy Snape took 3 for 41, including the final wicket, making up for his duck in Leicestershire's 231.

Tim Ambrose's calm 55 took Warwickshire to a tense, tight two-wicket win over Lancashire in a low-scoring match at Old Trafford. Lancashire were reduced to a perilous 63 for 6 before Glen Chapple, inevitably, rescued them with a fighting 66 to take the home side to 183. But like Lancashire, Warwickshire's top and middle order were blown away by the seamers, until Ambrose steadied their chase in his patient fifty, as Warwickshire crept past with 12 balls remaining.
Anthony McGrath's 66 and three cheap wickets from Tim Bresnan took Yorkshire through to an easy 42-run win over Scotland at Edinburgh. Chasing 260 Scotland were reduced to 68 for 5 before Craig Wright, the former captain, gave them brief hope with a quick 59 from 66. He became Bresnan's third victim, though, and Scotland's tail offered little resistance to Darren Gough and Matthew Hoggard.
Ian Harvey's run-a-ball 60 took Derbyshire to a four-wicket win over Durham at Chester-le-Street. Three wickets apiece for Tom Lungley and Graham Wagg restricted Durham to 212 for 9. And though Derbyshire's top-order wobbled in their chase, Simon Katich's 81 steadied their response before Harvey walked them over the line.
A fine allround performance from Bilal Shafayat helped Nottinghamshire beat his former county Northamptonshire by 122 runs at Northampton. Shafayat struck 104 from 115 in Nottinghamshire's sizeable 328 for 5 which also featured a crunching 66 from Mark Wagh and an equally brisk 40 from Chris Read. But Northants crumbled - in spite of a remarkable unbeaten 116 from David Sales which took him just 36 balls. Shafayat ended with the fine figures of 2 for 30.
