Group C

An impressive late display from the Sussex bowlers meant Murray Goodwin's brilliant 144 didn't go to waste after it appeared Surrey would chase down a formidable 314 at Hove but in the end pulled up two runs short. It came down to 15 off the last over and five from the final ball, but Grant Elliott could only hit two. Scott Newman responded to Goodwin's innings with a career-best 130 off 126 balls, adding 156 for the first wicket with Michael Brown (66). Newman and Stewart Walters then carried the total to 229 when Newman fell to Michael Yardy as the innings lost crucial moment. At one stage Surrey needed 84 off 14 overs with their batting Powerplay in hand. Walters and Usman Afzaal struggled to match the earlier scoring rate as the experience of Yasir Arafat and James Kirtley came to the fore. Goodwin's innings came after an unsteady start from Sussex, and he added 135 with Michael Yardy (59), as Surrey paid for dropping him on 39 when Gary Wilson dropped an edge off Chris Schofield. Goodwin's hundred came off 99 balls, then the remaining 44 runs required just 18 deliveries.
Gloucestershire maintained their unbeaten record with a thumping 148-run win over Durham at Bristol. Hamish Marshall (56) and William Porterfield (68) gave the innings early impetus with a stand of 116 before Durham fought back against the middle order. However, Chris Taylor consolidated with a run-a-ball 71 and there was a late kick to the innings from Stephen Adshead and Jon Lewis. Needing a solid start, Durham were blown away by Gloucestershire's seamers as Lewis, Anthony Ireland and James Franklin took out the top five for 43. The result leaves Durham struggling to reach the quarter-finals.

Group A

An unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 61 between Adam Voges and Paul Franks settled Nottinghamshire nerves as they completed a four-wicket win against Worcestershire at Trent Bridge. The home side were cruising at 128 for 2 as Mark Wagh (52) and Samit Patel (45) added 89 before they lost four 22 to give Worcestershire a chance. But Franks and Voges knew the required rate was never an issue and they won with more than five overs in hand. Half centuries from Moeen Ali (58) and Daryl Mitchell (59) boosted the Worcestershire total, but they never really got on top of a discipline attack.
Hampshire were frustrated by the rain as their match against Ireland at Eglinton was washed out without a ball bowled.

Group B

Ian Bell bagged a duck on the day of his England recall as Kent proved too good for Warwickshire with a four-wicket win at Canterbury. Bell was bowled fifth ball by Wayne Parnell, who came round the wicket and clearly enjoyed the success, to leave the visitors struggling on 22 for 2 before Jonathan Trott (52) and Jim Troughton (62) added 108 for the third wicket. However, the innings fell away after Troughton lofted Rob Ferley to long-off as Ferley collected an impressive 3 for 34. Kent's run chase was a team effort with no one passing Joe Denly's 49. The key partnership came between Geraint Jones and Justin Kemp for the fifth wicket after two wickets for Ant Botha gave Warwickshire a sniff. Kemp remained unbeaten as Kent won with more than eight overs in hand.

Group D

Lancashire lost their unbeaten record as defending champions Essex cruised to a six-wicket win at Chelmsford. It looked like victory would be even more comfortable after Lancashire slumped to 82 for 8, but resistance from Luke Sutton and Stephen Parry at least made something of a contest. The tone had been sent in the opening over of the day when Graham Napier removed the in-form Paul Horton, but the pick of the bowlers was David Masters with 3 for 19, while Ravi Bopara collected the key wicket of Ashwell Prince. However, Bopara's desire for another decent innings before the second Test - he was the only England player released for this round of matches at his own request - ended when he clipped a catch to midwicket. But the result was rarely in doubt as Varun Chopra hit 72, his fourth one-day half-century of the season, as Essex eased home with 35 balls remaining.
Stuart Law's 95 was the key performance in Derbyshire's 21-run victory against Northamptonshire at Wantage Road. He hit ten boundaries in his 113-ball innings, adding 100 for the third wicket with Wavell Hinds (57) as Derbyshire posted an impressive 286 for 9. Monty Panesar, omitted from England's Test squad, ended wicketless in his 10 overs. Northamptonshire made a brisk start to their chase as Riki Wessels and Niall O'Brien added 66, but when their stand was broken the innings fell away. Mark Nelson tried to revive the chase with 74 off 67 balls, his maiden half-century in the first team, but the damage had been done.
