Wagg of the tail lifts Glamorgan again

Graham Wagg came to Glamorgan's rescue on the opening day of their Championship Division Two match against Leicestershire in Cardiff.

Entering the action with Glamorgan struggling on 136 for 6, Wagg struck six sixes and seven fours on his way to a belligerent 94 which - along with Chris Cooke's 84 - helped the hosts recover to 278 all out. Leicestershire reached 37 for 1 in reply by the close with opener Angus Robson perishing for just 11.

Glamorgan won the toss and elected to bat but had slumped to 23 for 3 after 40 minutes. Jacques Rudolph edged a Clint McKay outswinger behind to Niall O'Brien, Will Bragg was needlessly run out responding to Ben Wright's poor call, and Colin Ingram holed out to cover off McKay to depart for a second-ball duck.

Wright and Craig Meschede were trapped lbw to Jigar Naik and Ben Raine respectively as Glamorgan stumbled to 116 for 5. McKay picked up his final victim when he bowled wicketkeeper-batsman Mark Wallace for 14 to leave Glamorgan six down with just 136 on the board.

On a slow pitch, the Leicestershire attack bowled a tight line but Cooke played watchfully and was nearing his first century of the season before he chopped on to his stumps off Charlie Shreck. Glamorgan had recovered to 180 when Cooke became their seventh batsman to depart the action, his 141-ball innings featuring 11 fours.

Wagg was on 28 when No. 11 Andy Carter entered the fray but the on-loan Nottinghamshire bowler gave him solid support as the pair put on 78 for the last wicket - the highest partnership of the innings.

Leicestershire's innings was less than five overs old when Robson's defences were breached by Michael Hogan before Matt Boyce and Ned Eckersley saw out the final 10 overs of the day.
