Akmal ton sets up National Bank win

A round-up of President's Cup One Day Tournament that took place on January 3, 2014

Kamran Akmal's 12th List A hundred set up National Bank of Pakistan's nine-wicket win over Port Qasim Authority in a President's Cup One Day tournament game in Sialkot.
Chasing 175, Akmal's 81-ball 116 guided National Bank's reply after they lost opener Nasir Jamshed in the fourth over. Akmal's century had 20 fours and a six and his 144-run stand with Mohammad Nawaz ensured National Bank reached the target in the 24th over.
Earlier, the National Bank bowlers, led by offspinner Adnan Rasool, struck regularly to restrict Port Qasim to 174. The Port Qasim batsmen, including Umar Amin and Daniyal Ahsan got starts but could not score more than 36 and 44 respectively.
Fifties from Zulfiqar Jan and Usman Salahuddin helped Khan Research Laboratories complete a seven-wicket win over Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited. Chasing 204, the pair were involved in a 94-run stand to put KRL on the road to victory. Zulfiqar was out for 68 off 90 balls with nine fours, while Salahuddin remained unbeaten on 65 off 79 balls, hitting six fours.
Earlier, ZTBL, who were struggling at 5 for 2 in the third over, posted a score of 203 for 9 thanks to contributions from the middle and lower-order, including Haris Sohail (24) and Sohail Tanvir (49). Pacers Sadaf Hussain and Umaid Asif were the most successful for KRL, picking up three wickets each.
Habib Bank Limited fell short by 16 runs in their match against Sui Northern Gas and Pipelines Ltd in Lahore.
Chasing 267, Habib Bank were anchored by Bilal Shafayat's 94-ball 73 and a 53-run, seventh-wicket stand between Jamal Anwar and Humayun Farhat. However, once the batsmen departed, the Habib Bank tail-enders found the going tough and eventually finished at 250 for 8.
Earlier, a half-century from Taufeeq Umar and handy knocks from Ali Waqas, Khurram Shehzad and Mohammad Rizwan helped SNGPL reach 266 for 7. Umar and Shehzad were involved in a 104-run fourth-wicket stand, before a quick 47-run, partnership between Imran Khalid and Rizwan propelled the score past 250.
Pakistan International Airlines sneaked a four-wicket victory over Water and Power Development Authority in Faisalabad.
The seventh-wicket pair of Sarfraz Ahmed and Anwar Ali ensured a PIA win by chasing down the target of 218 with four balls to spare. Sarfraz and Anwar ensured that the 121-run, second-wicket partnership between Kamran Sajid and Fahad Iqbal was not in vain, after a few quick wickets in the middle overs had made the chase shaky. Sajid scored 60 off 88 balls, while Fahad fell four runs short of his maiden List A hundred, scoring 96 off 111 balls.
Earlier, fifties from the No.8 and No. 9 batsmen - Saadullah Zafar and Zulfiqar Babar - ensured that WAPDA posted a competitive 217 for 8 after their top and middle order had slumped to 81 for 6. Both batsmen struck their maiden List A fifties. Saadullah scored 50 off 76 balls, while Babar's unbeaten 52 came off 39 balls with five fours and a six.
Pacer Kaleem Sana's maiden List A four-for restricted United Bank Limited to 182, giving Pakistan Television a narrow, seven-run win, their first in the tournament.
Chasing a middling 190, United Bank were struggling at 17 for 4 before contributions from Saeed Bin Nasir, Mohammad Zohaib, Asif Raza and Mohammad Irshad brought the team closer to the target. United Bank lost wickets in a cluster again, however, and were dismissed for 182.
Earlier, PTV opener Mohammad Naeem's 122-ball 85 was the only bright spot for the side that struggled after being put in to bat. Only three batsmen other than Naeem crossed double figures, although PTV were boosted by the 25 extras conceded by the United Bank bowlers, reaching a score of 189 for 9. With figures of 3 for 35, Adil Raza was the most successful bowler for United Bank, while Asif Raza and Kashif Bhatti took two wickets each.
