Games end in draw after bad weather

Round-up of the President's Trophy matches that ended on January 17, 2014

Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited and Habib Bank Limited played out a draw in Lahore. ZTBL, electing to bat, managed 359 in their first innings, thanks to the opener Sharjeel Khan's 158, as well as fifties from Haseeb-ur-Rehman and Abdul Razzaq. Umar Gul and Mohammad Aslam shared six wickets between them, but conceded a total of 186 runs.
Habib Bank, in reply, were buoyed by an opening stand of 188 between Bilal Shafayat and Jamal Anwar. Shafayat fell five short of his 13th first-class ton, but Jamal hit 128 to take the team's total to 267 for 3. However, heavy fog meant that only 10 overs were possible on the third day, and none on the fourth, and the game fizzled out into an inevitable stalemate.
The game between Khan Research Laboratories and Water and Power Development Authority also ended in a draw, as no play was possible on the fourth day due to bad weather. Zulfiqar Babar notched a five-wicket haul for WAPDA, but centuries from Mohammad Yasin and Nayyer Abbas pushed KRL's first-innings total to 376. WAPDA's batsmen, in reply, all made starts, but only Ayaz Tasawwar could score a fifty and made 77 with 11 fours. WAPDA's progress was stalled by regular wickets from left-arm spinner Nayyer Abbas who finished with 7 for 60, and the team were eventually bowled out for 232.
KRL, with a first-innings lead of 144, would have liked to push on for a win, but failed to gather any momentum and stumbled to 142 for 5 before the umpires called for stumps.
Four different batsmen scored centuries in Karachi as Pakistan International Airlines and Port Qasim Authority played out a draw at the Southend Club Cricket Stadium. Port Qasim, put in to bat, managed a mammoth 500 in their first innings, with a significant chunk of the runs coming from Tanvir Ahmed who struck 118. Khalid Latif and Mohammad Waqas contributed 85 and 91 respectively, while Tahir Khan picked up seven wickets for PIA.
PIA too however gave a good account of themselves with the bat, as Sheharyar Ghani scored 194- his highest first-class score- to rally the team to 449. The team however scored at a rate of just 3.25 and in the process, batted out two whole days, meaning that only a draw was a likely result.
Port Qasim, nonetheless, played at a much faster rate in their second innings- scoring at 6.60 an over- to reach 394 for 6 before the match ended. Latif scored 107 while Shahzaib Hasan hit 119.
