Karnataka, Bengal book semi-final berths

A round-up of the quarter-final matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy played on March 11, 2014

Karnataka 301 for 7 (Uthappa 132, Nair 120, Bumrah 4-58) beat Gujarat 274 (Akshar 93, Vinay 5-85) by 27 runs
Scorecard
Centuries from Robin Uthappa and Karun Nair helped Karnataka overcome a top-order collapse to punch the team's semi-final ticket with a 27-run win over Gujarat. The pair were joined at 31 for 4 and essayed a counterattack that fetched 209 runs in 214 balls. Akshar Patel (93) was the life of the chase, but the captain Vinay Kumar picked up a five-for to ensure Gujarat fell short.
After Karnataka were put in, Jasprit Bumrah and Kamlesh Thakor handed out ducks to three of the top five. Uthappa and Nair culled the rot, while keeping the score moving briskly. Karnataka were ushered past 50, then 100 and soon into a position of strength. Nair struck 14 fours and a six in his 121-ball 120 and when he was dismissed in the 44th over, Karnataka were a healthy 240. Uthappa carried his bat through the innings, collecting 132 off 135 balls, with 10 fours and three sixes.
Gujarat's reply revolved around their fifth wicket stand, which amounted to 139 runs. Akshar was the aggressor, his 93 coming off 78 balls while Rujul Bhatt held one end up. But with the required rate mounting - Gujarat needed 87 off 69 - both batsmen fell in successive overs and Karnataka regained control. Vinay accounted for the tail which wagged a bit, thanks to a 23-ball 30 from Rohit Dahiya.
Bengal 167 (Lahiri 32, Yo Mahesh 4-23) beat Tamil Nadu 90 (Shami 4-25, Dinda 3-13) by 77 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Mohammed Shami and Ashok Dinda exploited the substantial bounce and swing on offer at Eden Gardens to help Bengal move into the semi-finals with a 77-run win against Tami Nadu. Shami (4-25) and Dinda (3-13) picked up seven wickets between them as the visitors folded for 90 during their chase of 168.
Dinda, opening the bowling, attacked the batsmen right from the off and S Anirudha's dismissal off the third ball of the innings - caught off a thick edge by second slip - sparked off a Tamil Nadu collapse that they ultimately never recovered from. Such was the incisive bowling of Bengal's pace duo that Tamil Nadu's batsmen spent the majority of their innings swatting aimlessly as the ball just whisked past their outside edge.
M Vijay was the only batsman who put up some fight, making a laboured 24 off 85, with one four struck off his 64th ball. None of his team-mates could muster more than 12, as Veer Pratap Singh and captain Laxmi Shukla accounted for the remaining three wickets.
Bengal, batting first, had made 167 from 42.1 overs on the back of handy contributions from Shukla (30) and Saurasish Lahiri (32), which helped them recover from an early wobble caused by seamer Yo Mahesh who effected four dismissals to rattle Bengal's top order.
