Patrick McCarthy's career extended over 16 years and three countries but totalled only ten first-class matches. His debut came in Bombay in 1938-39 while only 19 years old, he then played twice for Ceylon, where he was born, in 1944-45 and 1945-46, before reappearing for Western Australia in 1950-51 after a five-year gap. He scored 88 in his third match for them but then endured another two-year absence before finishing the 1953-54 season with a career-best 98 against NSW.
