South Australia v NSW, Sheffield Shield, Adelaide, 4th day March 6, 2014

Carters 84 helps NSW to tense draw

ESPNcricinfo staff

South Australia 288 and 280 (Cooper 89, O'Keefe 6-70) drew with New South Wales and 207 for 9 (Carters 84, Botha 4-51)

Ryan Carters led a determined New South Wales stonewalling in Adelaide to claim two points in a draw with South Australia. Chasing down a target of 277 became a secondary objective as Johan Botha accounted for the middle order. His four wickets were key to the Blues' lack of substantial partnerships, but Carters' half-century kept things even.

Carters collected six fours and three sixes in a 175-ball effort, but when seamer Chadd Sayers had him lbw for 84, the Redbacks scented victory. A feisty cameo from Steve O'Keefe - 34 off 59 - stalled that charge and he received excellent support from No.10 Josh Hazlewood's 52-ball 12 to prevent the Redbacks from getting the final wicket for the win.

O'Keefe was a thorn with the ball as well as he ensured the Redbacks tail did not wag and they were dismissed for 280. His 6 for 70 took his match tally to eleven.

whiteman should be next in line behind haddin. the success of carters and dunk is because this is the on e season they have stopped keeping. carters should be considered as a opening batsmen with warner or hughes.

xtrafalgarx: the reason why whiteman has no centuries is due to the fact that he bats at 7/8 behind Marsh and Turner who are worser bats than him ! Most of the times, Whiteman has only the tail for company.. Would like to see Carter keeping for a season or two if he s gonna be our next keeper ... thats not gonna happen at NSW ...

@Rahul: Whiteman still too young, no centuries yet. I think Carters is more mature though Whiteman is also a good prospect.

Sorry but i think Whiteman is the next in line behind Haddin ... 21 years old ... averages 55+ in the shield this year coming at 7/8 ! thats an achievement in itself ... Highest number of dismissals by a Keeper this season ... He shud replace Haddin .. Carters shud try it out purely as an opener .. Suspect his glovework is as suspect as Wade !

Carters is insane, i reckon he is now the favourite to replace Haddin. he is averaging around 60 this season with 3 hundreds i think so if he repeats this next year he is on the home straight at 23 years old!

@VivGilchrist: Short memory. lyon just took a 5fer in the game before this, yes he had a bad test but to drop a veteran of over 30 tests just because an FC spinner took a 5fer is ridiculous.

Agree with O'Keefe comments. If he isn't picked for this upcoming tour, there are serious biases against him at Cricket Australia. Best record of spinners for the last 3 years in shield, under 25 for career, can bat as selectors seem to like, leadership, his bowling style may suit UAE. Plus in the few games they played together for NSW, Lyon and Steve played well. Not quite Warne and MacGill, but the best 2 spinners we have

Agree with comments. No discredit to Lyon as he has a heart likened to his namesake, but it's a travesty that SOK hasn't been given a try.. Back to back Michelle's in this match is a great statement.. 38 and counting

Wow. 11 wicket haul for O'Keefe... job well done. Carters showing a lot of promise too.

The best spinner in Australia is showing his worth. Lyon isn't doing bad enough to dump from the Autralian team, but I think O'Keefe would do better if given the chance (as should have happened long ago).
