Bangladesh in Sri Lanka Test Series - 3rd Test

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh

Sri Lanka won by an innings and 193 runs

Overs 0-50

Righto, Malinga to begin, Javed Omar to take first strike

Pitch : The experts expect the pitch to have more purchase for the fast bowlers than what we saw in Colombo. There is a covering of live grass on the surface and there is a bit of moisture from the overnight rain. Speaking of the rain, nothing to worry folks. There's bright sunshine and we should get underway on time. Unless of course, the elements decide otherwise...

Toss and teams : For the third time, Mahela Jayawardene has won the toss and elected to field.

There are three changes to the Sri Lankan side. Chaminda Vaas has returned to Middlesex and Sujeeva de Silva, the left-arm seamer, comes in his place. de Silva, not to be confused with his namesake, another left-arm seamer who played in the late 90's, has played two Tests, both against Bangladesh, back in 2002.

Upul Tharanga, the opener, has recovered from a heel injury and will replace Malinda Warnapura, unlucky to miss out after scoring 82 in the second Test. Dilhara Fernando has been rested and Farveez Maharoof replaces him.

Bangladesh have brought in Syed Rasel, the left-arm seamer, for Mohammad Sharif, who went wicketless in the second Test. Tushar Imran, the middle order bat, replaces Mehrab Hossain Jnr. Rasel is a penetrative bowler in the one-dayers, keeping the batsmen quiet with his nagging stump-to-stump line. It will be interesting to see if his selection for the Test pays off.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the 3rd and final Test of this 'enthralling' series between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at Kandy. I am Kanishkaa Balachandran, your commentator for the day.

We've entered a dead rubber, with Sri Lanka wrapping up the series 2-0, needing just three days at the P Sara Stadium to inflict another innings defeat. If this match has to go the distance, it's entirely upto Bangladesh to save face and give the home side a fight. It's not often that Bangladesh get opportunities to play a series of three Tests or more and their encouraging World Cup performance must have played a big part in giving them an additional Test in this series. They needed experience at the Test level and this is it. Will we see a different side over the next few days? We'll wait and see.

13.55 local time: Play will get underway oow.

13.20 local time: Unfortunately, the clouds are back and so is the rain. The covers are back on. We still have no official word yet on a resumption. We will keep you updated. Looks like all one can do is wait and watch. We are just as frustrated as you are.

Kishore writes: "We are really so frustrated seeing the rain betraying with Bangladesh! Come on, man..........we were so fortunate as Habibul Bashar started to play some good cricket, and now I am so much worried seeing the long break which will have a serious affect on Bashar ---I am sure!

13.00 local time: Well, here we go again. There's another delay and play is expected to get underway at 13.20 local time. We were informed that it rained again about half and hour back, prompting the delay. It's frustrating, I know. Stay in touch.

12.10 local time: News has just come in that the players will take an early lunch and the post-lunch session will commence at 1 PM local time. They were optimistic of squeezing in some cricket just before the scheduled lunch break. Looks like we'll have to wait a bit longer. The second session will be longer, two-and-a-half hours.

Well, so Bangladesh have something to smile about. After scores of 89 and 62 in their outings in Colombo , 48 for 1 here is a radical improvement. Credit to them. For a summarised account of the session, please read the bulletin by Jamie Alter.

Time to check the inbox. Anjan wonders why Bashar is always the scapegoat. Here goes: "I really can't understand those guys who are seeing all problems only on Habibul Bashar. Come on, dudes... Everyone is getting failure!"

Badrul Alam has something to say about that: "You know Anjan why Bashar is always in pinpoint because he was the former captain as well as the highest run-getter for Bangladesh team so he has to be leading from the front."

It's hard to keep the topic of Bashar out and Jamil, writing from USA, gets the shivers. He writes: "Is Malinga a blonde or is he simply always trying to scare the batsman with his unpredictable hairdo? And what's up with Habibul Bashar....he looks so nervous that he makes me nervous."

After a host of emails from Bangladeshis, we finally have one from a neutral observer. Tim, from Australia, (I'm presuming he is an Australian!) says that Murali and Dilshan too should have rested. He adds: "Sri Lanka should have been adventurous and brought in the great PA [Aravinda] de Silva." Would Aravinda slip into whites again four years into retirement? Only the man himself can answer that...

12.00 local time: We will get some cricket before the lunch interval. Play is expected to start in approximately 5 minutes from now. Stay tuned.

11.50 local time: Some good news for you. The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off. Stay tuned for more updates.

Rain: Bad news folks. We have a rain delay here. The groundstaff were in fact ready with the covers just before Murali came on.

As I write, the rain is pelting down. Let's hope it's just a passing shower. In Sri Lanka, it generally pours in short bursts and that should be a good sign. We will keep you posted as and when we receive updates.

In the meantime, let's have a look at what few of our readers have written in. Jayawardene has won his third consecutive toss in the series and Farid Hasan has a whacky suggestion! He says: "There should be a change in rules making any team which has lost all previous tosses the automatic winner in the last match of the series. This will do some justice to teams like Bangladesh who apparently don't have any two-headed coins!"

Habibul Bashar seems to be a favourite topic . Atif says: "Very good strategy by Habibul Bashar.....He is boring the fielders to death and when they are almost asleep, he will give a chance to see if they are still awake...Pure Genius!!!"

We're not sure if they're actually asleep or not. Whatever may be the case, as long as he picks up runs, he wouldn't mind that too much...

16.20: They're back!

15.55 local time: The rain has reduced to a steady drizzle but that's hardly encouraging. The skies haven't brightened up at all. No official word yet.

15.25 local time: No signs of the rain letting up, I'm afraid. Bear in mind that the light needs to improve if there's any chance of extending play beyond the scheduled close. Even when the players resumed after lunch, the light was rather poor.

Anyway, responding to Aritro's comment (please read below), Mohammed Majid feels that Bangladesh should play more 4/5 day games against Ireland, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Anjan too agrees, but adds that the infrastructure in Bangladesh needs to be developed first.

Dawn writes: "I think it will be more useful if our A side regularly participates in the 4 day tournaments of Sri Lanka, Pakistan and India. In these tournaments our would be national players would get the chance to play with good Test players and learn more."

14.55 local time: And it goes on and on... The steady drizzle has led to another heavy shower. Chances of getting in at least a steady passage of play seem bleak. We're still waiting for an official announcement. Till then, watch this space for updates.

Else, here's something to ponder about. Aritro Abedin, writing from Australia, lends his thoughts on Bangladesh's struggle at Test level. He writes: "Bangladesh's failures in Test cricket won't be helped by a rather long break before their next series. There's not much that can be done about that, given the rigidity of the ICC Test schedule, but it might be in everyone's best interests if they fill in the vacant months at the end of this year with a one-day series in Ireland. The Irish have some reasonable seamers who could provide valuable experience against the moving ball for the Bangladeshi batsmen, especially in overcast conditions. At least one of our many problems is our inability to adjust to unfamiliar conditions. Ireland provides a challenging but relatively gentle oppurtunity to do improve at that."

While Aritro suggests a one-day series, would Bangladesh be served better if they played a series of unofficial four/five-day games as well?

14.40 local time: The news isn't any better. There's still a persistent drizzle and the covers are still on. Makes you wonder just how much cricket they will eventually manage today.

One of our readers, Bashar, from Japan, (that confirms it's not Habibul, the batsman writing in) describes the rain delays as "divine interventions".

Responding to that, Amith writes: "Atleast 'divine intervention' would ensure this game lasts for more than 3 days!"

14.25 local time: Like we haven't had enough rain already.... The covers are back on. Looks like the groundstaff have clocked more minutes in the field than the players. The rain hasn't stopped yet. It has to be hard on Nafees in particular, trying to maintain his focus in this stop-start day.

17.20 local time: Play has officially been called off due to bad light . Play on the second day will commence half an hour early, at 10.00 AM local time.

Stats for the day - Only 110 minutes of play were possible, leaving a whopping 250 minutes lost due to frequent rain interruptions and in the end, poor visibility. Only 29 overs were bowled, equivalent to a single session of play.

Bangladesh squandered a steady start after losing three wickets for the addition of 14 runs. Nafees, who looked impressive, threw away his wicket, giving Sri Lanka the upper hand. The interruptions didn't help, and it's upto Ashraful to start the repair work all over again, weather permitting.

Thanks for your mails and importantly, your patience. Play will start at 10.00 AM local time tomorrow. Till then, this is Kanishkaa signing off. Cheers!

16.55 local time: And we have interruption No.27...! For a change it's not the rain, it's bad light.

In this brief passage of play, Sri Lanka have picked up two wickets, one of which was gifted. Nafees had his eye in and a sudden rush of blood saw him lose his wicket. Saleh was again swallowed up by a doosra. After a steady start, Bangladesh will not be too thrilled with this.

We will keep you posted as and when updates come in.

Alrighto, the players are coming out. Sujeeva de Silva to open the bowling.

10.10 local time: Word is out that play will get underway at 10.30. The umpires said that certain areas in the infield (near the bowler's run-up) and near the boundary were of concern with several wet patches. Unfortunately, the forecast isn't too great and if umpire Rudi Koertzen is to be believed (we believe him!), we could be in for another stop-start day.

Weather permitting, 98 overs need to be bowled and the scheduled close will be 6 PM. Fingers crossed.

9.55 local time: Slight change of plan. We are in for another delayed start as the umpires were seen inspecting the outfield with some concern. The officials and the groundstaff covered the wet areas with sawdust. No official word yet about the start. Nothing to worry. Like we said, there's bright sunshine so this shouldn't be too long a delay. Stay tuned.

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the second say of the third Test between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in Kandy. I am Kanishkaa Balachandran, your commentator today as well.

The good news is that there's bright sunshine and we should get underway on time. Only 29 overs were possible yesterday with the intermittent rain. The pitch has a bit of moisture after yesterday's rain so the overnight Bangaldesh batsmen will have to be on their toes in the first hour at least. No cracks on the surface yet but that doesn't mean that Muralitharan won't be a threat - he picked up two quick wickets yesterday.

15.25: (Like we aren't used to it already!) The showers have promptly returned and so have the covers. Players have taken tea.

15.00: Hold your breath... the covers are coming off. There was no rain after all. The sun's still playing hide and seek behind those dark clouds. No official word yet on a resumption.

14.40: Unfortunately, the dark clouds have returned and as a precautionary measure, the covers have been put back on. It isn't raining at the moment, though another interruption seems ominous. It's a pity as we had bright sunshine for a good half and hour before this.

14.00: The good news is that the covers are slowly coming off. The amount of water on the surface of those covers is worrying. Play could resume in another half and hour, but there again, no guarantees.

One of our readers has a suggestion to liven things up. He writes: "I wonder whether SL should forfeit one of its 2 innings to make the match bit more competitive." Unlikely, unless this is a veteran's match.

13.00: The news is still bad folks. The rain has stopped but the covers are still on. There's plenty of water on the surface of the covers and it could take close to an hour for play to start. It has brightened up a bit so that's encouraging. Stay tuned for updates.

Time to check the inbox. Jagdish writes: "Now, Sri Lanka should declare their innings with the scores level at 131 and then they try to bowl Bangladesh out at the earliest and then try to win to make the balance runs. If they wait to build a huge lead like first two Tests then they may lose important time to win this mach as well."

Paul, from Australia writes: "The one positive from the rain interruptions, is that it will compel the Sri Lankan batsmen to increase their scoring rate, if they want a clean sweep of this series. their batting has been disappointingly slow in the first 2 Tests."

12.35: It's still pouring in Kandy and it's highly unlikely that play will start at 1 PM. Here's some irrelevant information - it's raining in Colombo as well.

12.10: The players will take an early lunch as the rain continues to pelt down. On the bright side (no pun intended), it isn't very gloomy out there so this could turn out to be a passing shower. If all goes well, the second session will start at 13.00 local time.

Rain strikes again.

That's another six-wicket haul for Muralitharan. He will need another six-wicket haul in the second innings to take 700 Test wickets. Taking it in his hometown would be fitting, or else he woud have to wait for the tour of Australia later this year.

It continues to rain in Kandy and lunch break isn't too far away. Bangladesh have flattered to deceive yet again, losing their last six wickets for just 33 runs today. The shot selection of a few batsmen contributed to this collapse.
