England tour of Sri Lanka, 2007/08 / Commentary

England in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 1st ODI

Sri Lanka v England

Sri Lanka won by 119 runs

James Anderson will take the new ball, and Upul Tharanga is on strike. Here we go:

A quick reminder of the ICC's new regulations:

  • A mandatory new ball after 35 overs

  • One extra fielder outside the fielding circle in EITHER the 2nd OR 3rd Powerplay (to aid the spinners)

  • Free hit for a front-foot no-ball

  • 2.15pm We're almost set to get underway. The pitch looks firm and true, a bit cracked and dry, but neither captain expects it to break up a great deal. "Under the lights it might zip around," predicts Sky's pundit, Nick Knight, which won't please Collingwood. It is a very windy day, which may disrupt the bowlers' rhythms, but at least the players will be kept cool.

I'm Andrew Miller, and my co-commentators will be Jenny Thompson and Martin Williamson, with Andrew McGlashan on the bulletin.

Stat attack England have only ever won one of their eight ODIs in Sri Lanka - and that was their very first game way back in 1982, in the days of Gooch, Gower, Botham and Willis.

Toss Sri Lanka win the toss and bat. Mahela Jayawardene believes that runs on the board will be the key in this contest, especially given that England will have to pace their chase beneath the floodlights.

"A little disappointing," admits Collingwood, "but the good thing is we'll know how many we have to chase. But the boys are buzzing and looking forward to the challenge."

Without Andrew Flintoff, England have needed to balance their batting and bowling options, hence Swann's extra prowess at No. 8.

Rule change At the start of the 35th over, there will be a mandatory ball-change, in line with the ICC's recent change in regulations.

2pm News is coming through of England's team. As expected, Durham's Phil Mustard is chosen to make his debut as a replacement for the stricken Matt Prior. But perhaps more intriguingly there is a recall, almost eight years on from his only ODI, for Nottinghamshire's Graeme Swann, who has been picked ahead of Monty Panesar. So much for Collingwood's pre-series proclamations about Monty being his main man for this tour.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Phil Mustard (wk), 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Paul Collingwood (capt), 7 Owais Shah, 8 Graeme Swann, 9 Stuart Broad, 10 Ryan Sidebottom, 11 James Anderson.

Sri Lanka 1 Upul Tharanga, 2 Sanath Jayasuriya, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Jehan Mubarak, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Chaminda Vaas, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Dilhara Fernando.

Kaushal Lokuarchchi misses out, with Farveez Maharoof taking the spot vacated by Muttiah Muralitharan's bicep injury.

1.45pm Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the first ODI between England and Sri Lanka at Dambulla. After a frenetic fortnight in South Africa the teams have reverted to the longer version of the shorter game, although quite how long that will be remains to be seen - the last time these two teams played at this venue, in 2003-04, England made a woeful total of 88, and Sri Lanka won by 10 wickets inside 14 overs.

Still, times have moved on since then, and England are a much-changed side - only two players survive from that debacle, Paul Collingwood, who top-scored with 31 and is now captain, and James Anderson.

    0.1

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, excellent line and length to start proceedings, just zipping past Tharanga's vertical bat

    0.2

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, good bowling again, angling across the left-hander and threatening to graze the edge. Mustard stoops low to take

    0.3

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 run, slightly straighter and nipping back into the pads of the left-hander. Clipped off the toes for the first run of the match

    Two slips in place

    0.4

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full length, on off stump, nudged leg-side

    0.5

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, a bit of a swish outside off, but the ball doesn't take off at all. Skids through low, and not a lot of movement either

    0.6

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, an effort ball to finish, but again it doesn't get up much. Outside off stump and left well alone

Tidy enough first over from Anderson. Who will share the new ball? It will be Ryan Sidebottom

End of over 1 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 2/0 (RR: 2.00)
    WU Tharanga    1* (5b)      JM Anderson    1-0-2-0
    ST Jayasuriya    1* (1b)

    1.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full and straight, rapped on the pads and a huge appeal from Sidebottom - so huge that he falls over in doing so. But there was a fat inside-edge on that one

A bit of a delay as someone wanders past the sightscreen.Monty Panesar has been roped into some scenery-shifting as well - he's currently lugging a pair of chairs away. Handy chap. And now the bails have blown off. It's all happening

    1.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 wide, too much width on that one

    1.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, that's better, floated into the slot and a wafty drive ensues. No contact

    1.3

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, straighter and fuller, defended out to point with a loud click of the bat

"I'm out of my comfort zone," says Gnasher, recently returned from the Twenty20s. "It should be about 20 for 3 by now." With that we've dispatched him to get the coffees

    1.4

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, lovely line and length, zippier delivery that time

    1.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, Tharanga shoulders arms as Sidebottom hits the seam and nips one away towards the slips

    1.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, tight bowling from Sidebottom, nothing much to work with for the Sri Lankans

End of over 2 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 4/0 (RR: 2.00)
    WU Tharanga    1* (10b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-2-0
    ST Jayasuriya    2* (2b)      JM Anderson    1-0-2-0

    2.1

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, in the slot for the drive, but pushed firmly out to cover where it's fielded with quick hands. No run there

    2.2

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full and straight, defended back down the pitch and a jogged single

    2.3

Anderson to Tharanga, 2 runs, shorter and on the hips, turned away with a flick of the wrists

    2.4

Anderson to Tharanga, 2 runs, shaping into the left-hander's pads, and tucked into the leg-side again

    2.5

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, brisk bowling, but not a lot of menace. Respectfully played nonetheless

    2.6

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, another tidy over. Tharanga raises his bat with a touch of alarm after playing his defensive stroke, as if the ball had done a bit off the pitch. I'm not sure it did though

End of over 3 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 9/0 (RR: 3.00)
    WU Tharanga    5* (14b)      JM Anderson    2-0-7-0
    ST Jayasuriya    3* (4b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-2-0

    3.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, good areas, Sidey, as his team-mates are doubtless saying

    3.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, a bit of lift outside off stump, left well alone

    3.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 1 wide, short and passes high over Jayasuriya's shoulder as he shapes to duck

    3.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, wider outside off stump, and a massive yahoo from Jayasuriya. No contact, luckily for the batsman

    3.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 1 run, turned calmly into the leg-side again. Runs coming at a trickle at present

    3.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, ripping delivery, angling back into the left-hander and holding its line outside off. Tharanga defended and just kept his bat inside the line

    3.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, yet more good areas to complete a tidy over. Slightly wider of off stump this time, but the same result

End of over 4 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0 (RR: 2.75)
    WU Tharanga    5* (16b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-4-0
    ST Jayasuriya    4* (8b)      JM Anderson    2-0-7-0

    4.1

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 run, a stifled appeal as Anderson raps the pads, but nothing doing from umpire de Silva

    4.2

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, defended into the leg-side, good variation of length

    4.3

Anderson to Tharanga, FOUR, and there's the first boundary of the match. Nothing wrong with the line but too short from Anderson, and calmly steered into the gap behind point

    4.4

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, fuller, straighter, defended

    4.5

Anderson to Tharanga, 2 runs, up and over from Tharanga - more of a Twenty20 shot and he was a bit lucky to clear mid-on. A better ball from Anderson too, full and straight. Signs of frustration?

    4.6

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, dabbed into the covers and swiftly picked up. A more expensive over, but England will still be happy with this start

End of over 5 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 18/0 (RR: 3.60)
    WU Tharanga    11* (21b 1x4)      JM Anderson    3-0-14-0
    ST Jayasuriya    5* (9b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-4-0

    5.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, bending from middle-and-leg and defended in front of middle-and-off. Good bowling

    5.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, defended again. None of Jayasuriya's favoured width is on offer here

    5.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, on the legs and swatted up and over midwicket. Plugs ten yards inside the rope

    5.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, full and angled into the pads, clipped fine and a scampered couple

    5.5

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, more frustration from Jayasuriya, who hares down the track to give Sidebottom a wallop. But misses again as the ball nips off the seam

    5.6

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, FOUR, he's found the rope at last, a thick outside-edge off another good delivery. Third man is too wide to cut that off

End of over 6 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 26/0 (RR: 4.33)
    ST Jayasuriya    13* (15b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-12-0
    WU Tharanga    11* (21b 1x4)      JM Anderson    3-0-14-0

    6.1

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, good waspish line and length. Met with a straight bat and pushed down the ground

    6.2

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, into position for the drive, but drilled straight to short cover

    6.3

Anderson to Tharanga, 2 runs, short and leg-sided. Might have been called wide if he hadn't made contact, but instead there's an easy couple as deep square leg sweeps round the boundary to field

    6.4

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, short and on off stump. Defended off the back foot to point

    6.5

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 run, full and a touch of width, slice-driven down to third man

    6.6

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, run-down chance, but Collingwood's shy at the non-striker's end misses from point. Jayasuriya was too concerned with a partial lbw shout to go for the leg-bye, and Tharanga had to back-pedal

End of over 7 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 29/0 (RR: 4.14)
    ST Jayasuriya    13* (16b 1x4)      JM Anderson    4-0-17-0
    WU Tharanga    14* (26b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-12-0

    7.1

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, driven loosely on the up, and so nearly carries to Ian Bell at short cover. Nice bowling again, and more frustration

    7.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 run, chopped down to gully, Cook tidies up

Already the slips have vanished, which is all you need to know about the movement on offer

    7.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, defended out to cover with bat and pad close together

    7.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, FOUR, slower ball, an offcutter, but Jayasuriya picked that and slotted it through the gap in the covers. Well played

    7.5

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, back to more conventional seam-up. Defended watchfully off the back foot

    7.6

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, FOUR, that's more like the Jayasuriya we know. Pre-meditated gallop down the track, gave himself room to swing the arms, and rifled a ruthless cut through the covers

End of over 8 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 38/0 (RR: 4.75)
    ST Jayasuriya    21* (20b 3x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-0-21-0
    WU Tharanga    15* (28b 1x4)      JM Anderson    4-0-17-0

    8.1

Anderson to Tharanga, 2 runs, loose drive again from Tharanga - the bottom hand comes off his bat as he does so - but finds the gap comfortably enough

    8.2

Anderson to Tharanga, FOUR, similar shot but better executed. Got his head over the ball and his weight going forward, and timed it to perfection too

England could do with a wicket as reward for their diligence. The runs are starting to flow now

    8.3

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, fuller length as a response, and defended into the covers

    8.4

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 run, bit of a fumble at cover, but a quick recovery. Can't save the single though

    8.5

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, another charge from Jayasuriya but Anderson saw him coming and dragged it down. Good bowling

    8.6

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 run, short again from Anderson and Jayasuriya goes back on his stumps to dab down to third man

Sri Lanka now going at five an over, and the office six-pest Gnasher has fallen asleep on his keyboard.

End of over 9 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 46/0 (RR: 5.11)
    ST Jayasuriya    22* (22b 3x4)      JM Anderson    5-0-25-0
    WU Tharanga    22* (32b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-0-21-0

Stuart Broad - he of the six sixes in an over - comes back for his first over since the Durban debacle

    9.1

Broad to Jayasuriya, FOUR, one bounce and into the hoardings at deep cover! So nearly seven in seven

    9.2

Broad to Jayasuriya, no run, better line and length

    9.3

Broad to Jayasuriya, no run, zips off the seam and cramps Jayasuriya for room

    9.4

Broad to Jayasuriya, no run, another expansive swipe but is beaten by some extra bounce. Jayasuriya is desperate to get stuck in now

    9.5

Broad to Jayasuriya, 1 leg bye, full and rapped on the pads, the ball bobbles out to midwicket

    9.6

Broad to Tharanga, no run, solid start, on the spot again, and that's the end of the first Powerplay

End of over 10 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 51/0 (RR: 5.10)
    WU Tharanga    22* (33b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-4-0
    ST Jayasuriya    26* (27b 4x4)      JM Anderson    5-0-25-0

    10.1

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, short and swiped off the back foot through midwicket. Starting to motor now ...

    10.2

Anderson to Jayasuriya, SIX, up, up and away! The first six of the innings, and just an easy pick-up, with the wind, over wide long-on

    10.3

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 wide, banged in down the leg-side, Jayasuriya goes after it, but can't make contact

    10.3

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 wide, wrong line again, Anderson is a bit rattled after those early blows. He also knows there's nothing in the pitch

    10.3

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 1 run, better line and length this time, but a scampered single nonetheless

    10.4

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, clubbed into the covers, half-stopped by a sprawling Collingwood

    10.5

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 run, short and leg-sided, clipped to midwicket

    10.6

Anderson to Jayasuriya, FOUR, that is precisely the wrong place to bowl to Jayasuriya when he's in the mood. A leg-stump long-hop, and that's pummelled behind square to complete a costly over

    Can Broad stem the tide?

End of over 11 (16 runs) Sri Lanka 67/0 (RR: 6.09)
    ST Jayasuriya    39* (31b 5x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    6-0-41-0
    WU Tharanga    23* (35b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-4-0

    11.1

Broad to Tharanga, no run, driven firmly into the covers, Collingwood fields with a slide

The bails blow off as Broad approaches the crease, dead-ball signalled

    11.2

Broad to Tharanga, no run, good line and length, driven back down the pitch

    11.3

Broad to Tharanga, no run, short and tight to off stump, Tharanga sways out of line

    11.4

Broad to Tharanga, 2 runs, full and fired in at off stump from over the wicket, swung away by the left-hander, but not timed

    11.5

Broad to Tharanga, no run, steered out to point off the back foot

    11.6

Broad to Tharanga, no run, full and outside off stump, another attempted moo through the leg-side, but instead an under-edge to fine leg

Here comes Ryan Sidebottom for another burst. He's bowling against the wind this time

End of over 12 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 69/0 (RR: 5.75)
    WU Tharanga    25* (41b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-6-0
    ST Jayasuriya    39* (31b 5x4 1x6)      JM Anderson    6-0-41-0

    12.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, outside off stump, and nibbles off the seam too. Good bowling

    12.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, dropped That was a massive steepler, hit straight up in the air as Jayasuriya went for a swipe straight down the ground. James Anderson hurtled back from mid-on, but just couldn't steady himself

    12.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, more measured response this time

    12.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, OUT, no mistake this time! Jayasuriya had another mow across the line, but it was a slower ball and Ravi Bopara at deep midwicket had time to compose himself under a top-edged swirler

    ST Jayasuriya c Bopara b Sidebottom 41 (69m 35b 5x4 1x6) SR: 117.14

    12.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, defended into the covers

    12.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 2 runs, half-stop from Bell in the covers saves two runs. That was powerfully struck

End of over 13 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 73/1 (RR: 5.61)
    WU Tharanga    27* (43b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-0-25-1
    KC Sangakkara    0* (0b)      SCJ Broad    2-0-6-0

    13.1

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, outside off stump and left alone

    13.2

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, on off stump and nudged into the leg-side with a quick shuffle

    13.3

Broad to Tharanga, no run, good line and length, defended to point

    13.4

Broad to Tharanga, 1 wide, short and swished at - the intention was an uppercut, but the ball wasn't there

There's a dog on the pitch. A very contented mutt, who has no idea where he's going, but is going there very determinedly nonetheless

    13.4

Broad to Tharanga, no run, outside off stump, another swish

The dog's still pottering around the outfield. Well, you need something to liven up the middle overs in these contests ...

    13.5

Broad to Tharanga, no run, tight bowling. But the dog is more interesting

And talking of which, here's one we reported on earlier.

    13.6

Broad to Tharanga, 1 run, nudged into the gap, but a much tidier over. Things have quietened down now Jayasuriya is out

End of over 14 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 76/1 (RR: 5.42)
    WU Tharanga    28* (47b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    3-0-9-0
    KC Sangakkara    1* (2b)      RJ Sidebottom    5-0-25-1

    14.1

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, defended off the back foot and played out to cover. Bell and Collingwood are being kept very busy. Not a lot is beating the bat at present

    14.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 3 runs, in the slot and clobbered straight down the ground again. Anderson does fantastically to catch up with the ball and claw it back into play inches inside the rope

    14.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, an edge but fairly intentional. Possibly went finer than intended but races over the rope at third man

    14.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, better shot, more bat on it, but only gets one for it, because it's too well timed and goes straight to third man. Figure that one out

    14.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, slower ball and Sangakkara is deceived as he wafts airily outside off

    14.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 run, perfect line and length, pushed back down the ground

So, to talk you through the final five overs of the innings ... oh, hang on ... it's Martin "Mad for It" Williamson

End of over 15 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 85/1 (RR: 5.66)
    WU Tharanga    32* (51b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-0-34-1
    KC Sangakkara    6* (4b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    3-0-9-0

Many thanks Andrew Miller, what a superb start to the series and thanks for the hospital pass of the middle overs of the innings. The other Andrew - McGlashan - freshly returned from the ICC World Twenty20 in South Africa, is moaning loudly every time there's a dot ball. And after drinks and a rub down, it's another Powerplay ... Kenny Rogers signals it ... hold on, it's Rudi ...

    15.1

Broad to Tharanga, 1 run, steered to point where Bopara makes a hash of stopping it and the ball dribbles under him for a single

Rudi Koertzen just showed the latest edition to umpiring signals, a whirl of the arms to show the next Powerplay has been taken followed by holding three figures up to show that three men can be outside the circle...how many ICC officials were needed to come up with that?

    15.2

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, back and chopped into the ground, a quick call from the non striker and a well-run single

    15.3

Broad to Tharanga, no run, driven into the off side, extra cover in quickly to scotch thoughts of the run

    15.4

Broad to Tharanga, 2 runs, tucked off his legs behind square, an easy two

    15.5

Broad to Tharanga, 1 run, stands tall and waits, punches off the back foot between fielders in the off-side ring

    15.6

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, slanted across the left-hander, he shapes to cut but it's too close, he's too cramped and the ball scoots through to the keeper

End of over 16 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 90/1 (RR: 5.62)
    KC Sangakkara    7* (6b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    4-0-14-0
    WU Tharanga    36* (55b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-0-34-1

    16.1

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, placed with an open face into the off - he turned the bat with his wrists very late to steer into space. Sidebottom snarls from under his mop

    16.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 2 runs, fuller, driven high over the covers off the bottom of the bat ... with the ring in he can play that shot with safety

    16.3

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, checked drive into the covers, straight to the fielder

    16.4

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, steps back and prods with little follow through to Bell at cover who is slightly deep but still there to prevent the one

    16.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 run, back once more, this time he opts to whip it into the on side and there's two as the fielder in the deep has much ground to cover

    16.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, defended to Sidebottom who is more intent on hurling the ball back at the striker and so ends up missing it altogether ... he smiles broadly as the batsmen run the one ... but would be so sanguine if it was someone else misfielding?

End of over 17 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 93/1 (RR: 5.47)
    KC Sangakkara    7* (7b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    7-0-37-1
    WU Tharanga    39* (60b 2x4)      SCJ Broad    4-0-14-0

    17.1

Broad to Tharanga, 1 run, thumped to the right of Pietersen at wide mid-off, he sticks out a hand and makes a good stop

    37.5

Collingwood to Silva, 1 run, leans out from his body to press the bat on the off-side where it's well returned

Several England players, including Pietersen, opting for the full-buttoned-up look, by the way

    37.6

Collingwood to Jayawardene, 1 run, swept round to Broad on the deep 45

End of over 38 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 192/3 (RR: 5.05)
    DPMD Jayawardene    45* (57b 2x4)      PD Collingwood    8-0-37-0
    LPC Silva    16* (14b 1x4)      GP Swann    7-0-32-1

    38.1

Swann to Jayawardene, 1 run, outside off, some air on that one, driven out to mid-on for a comfortable one

    38.2

Swann to Silva, no run, reaches out for a firm sweep, but he doesn't connect

    38.3

Swann to Silva, 3 runs, outside odd, driven out to the covers and as Sri Lanka come back for two off come the bails courtesy of a relay throw back to Swann. Safe

The crowd are slowly warming into this match and they celebrate the third umpire's not-out decision with whistles and cheers

    38.4

Swann to Jayawardene, 1 run, darting in on off and the batsman steps back to cut one that was aiming for his middle stump - and watches the ball right onto the bat, as is good practice, and out to point

    38.5

Swann to Silva, no run, defeated in the flight this time, the ball hopping outside his edge and on to Mustard

    38.6

Swann to Silva, no run, excellent work by Bell at extra cover - like a leaping salmon of a goalkeeper and other mixed metaphors - to cut that off

"No, we're not ignoring you," says Chris, "but we have live Test cricket from Pakistan on the TV to watch and watching some real cricket after all that slap and tickle is cathartic!" There are many words for a Jacques Kallis innings ... with one of my nameless colleagues deciding that cathartic is at the politer end of the spectrum

End of over 39 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 197/3 (RR: 5.05)
    LPC Silva    19* (18b 1x4)      GP Swann    8-0-37-1

Broad is back into the attack

    39.1

Broad to Jayawardene, FOUR, outside off, flayed through the covers to bring up the fifty. Great innings and he takes the applause by holding both hands on the bat as he lifts it high

    39.2

Broad to Jayawardene, 2 runs, more width, chopped down and on to Pietersen at third man

Well done to everyone for cutting the mustard with your Dujon/Dijon jokes... Adding some spice to our commentary. Etc etc

    39.3

Broad to Jayawardene, 1 run, worked out to the covers

    39.4

Broad to Silva, no run, speared in outside off and driven out to cover

    39.5

Broad to Silva, 1 run, banged wide outside off and cut off the back foot to Shah, who's sweeping out there

    39.6

Broad to Jayawardene, 1 run, outside off, even more width, off the back foot behind point

Now, that's the length of a Twenty20 match... and although Sri Lanka have been scoring at five an over, it doesn't feel it.

End of over 40 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 206/3 (RR: 5.15)
    DPMD Jayawardene    55* (63b 3x4)      SCJ Broad    7-0-30-1
    LPC Silva    20* (20b 1x4)      GP Swann    8-0-37-1

    40.1

Swann to Jayawardene, 1 run, right over it, waited patiently, and worked into midwicket

    40.2

Swann to Silva, 1 run, waited patiently and driven to cover

Let's see what Sri Lanka can do with their last ten overs - their platform is certainly set

    40.3

Swann to Jayawardene, 1 run, cut out to point for a quick single

    40.4

Swann to Silva, no run, pushed right up there, darting in at the toes, and defended on the front foot

    40.5

Swann to Silva, no run, up there again, the ball popping up off the forward defence but landing very safe

    40.6

Swann to Silva, no run, driven back to the bowler

Sidebottom back into the attack, now

End of over 41 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 209/3 (RR: 5.09)
    LPC Silva    21* (24b 1x4)      GP Swann    9-0-40-1
    DPMD Jayawardene    57* (65b 3x4)      SCJ Broad    7-0-30-1

    41.1

Sidebottom to Jayawardene, 1 run, on leg, pulled around behind square

    41.2

Sidebottom to Silva, 1 run, on off, rising slightly and surprising Silva whose top edge off a would-be pull lands way over Mustard

    41.3

Sidebottom to Jayawardene, no run, "Catch" suggests Mustard more in hope than expectation as the cover fielder jumps to his left to cut off the ball

    41.4

Sidebottom to Jayawardene, 1 run, played off the back foot behind point this time

The lights are coming on in the stadium, and lots of people are at home... though there's a healthy enough crowd (in parts)

    41.5

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, worked out to the covers

    41.6

Sidebottom to Silva, SIX, outside off and there's a six! The second of the innings, driven over mid-on. Well connected

Sidebottom smiles - or was that a grimace - and takes his massive shades, before retreating to his fielding position

End of over 42 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 218/3 (RR: 5.19)
    LPC Silva    28* (27b 1x4 1x6)      RJ Sidebottom    8-0-46-1
    DPMD Jayawardene    59* (68b 3x4)      GP Swann    9-0-40-1

    42.1

Swann to Jayawardene, no run, tight delivery, driven towards mid-on, Swann at full stretch to stop that one

    42.2

Swann to Jayawardene, FOUR, an inside-out cover drive on the up, just creeping inside the boundary

    42.3

Swann to Jayawardene, 2 runs, worked in front of midwicket this time - Sri Lanka starting to cut loose now

Swann had been looking good till this over

    42.4

Swann to Jayawardene, no run, good delivery this time, the ball nipping back and tempting the batsman into a drive, but gets an inside edge on to the pad

    42.5

Swann to Jayawardene, 1 run, waits, walks into the delivery, and drives out to mid-on

    42.6

Swann to Silva, no run, on off, swept round behind fine leg

A good spell from Swann, and has picked up his first international wicket to boot. Collingwood now

End of over 43 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 225/3 (RR: 5.23)
    LPC Silva    28* (28b 1x4 1x6)      GP Swann    10-0-47-1
    DPMD Jayawardene    66* (73b 4x4)      RJ Sidebottom    8-0-46-1

    43.1

Collingwood to Jayawardene, OUT, outside off, drives on the up and straight to Shah inside the cover boundary who watched it right into his clasping hands

    DPMD Jayawardene c Shah b Collingwood 66 (101m 74b 4x4 0x6) SR: 89.18

Jayawardene just couldn't quite clear the fielder there, but he's done an excellent job for Sri Lanka today

    43.2

Collingwood to Silva, 2 runs, swished off his feet to midwicket and they set off immediately - coming back for the second

    43.3

Collingwood to Silva, 1 run, reaches outside off to work down to third man

Dilshan to face his first delivery now

    43.4

Collingwood to Dilshan, 1 run, and he's off the mark straight away with a drive out towards Shah at extra cover

    43.5

Collingwood to Silva, 1 run, on middle and leg, turned off the legs for a comfortable single

    43.6

Collingwood to Dilshan, no run, a straight bouncer to round off and Mustard's broad beam shows how much he enjoyed that one

    Broad on now

End of over 44 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 230/4 (RR: 5.22)
    TM Dilshan    1* (2b)      PD Collingwood    9-0-42-1
    LPC Silva    32* (31b 1x4 1x6)      GP Swann    10-0-47-1

    44.1

Broad to Silva, 1 run, cutting in from outside off, rising, fended back down into the off-side

Broad strides back to his mark, looking like a man on a mission

    44.2

Broad to Dilshan, no run, ... and his intent is shown as Dilshan is surprised by the lift from that one - especially as this pitch is losing any pace he had

    44.3

Broad to Dilshan, no run, another swing and a miss

"Three in a row - he'd be out in baseball," notes Gnasher, who has a point.

    44.4

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, veering towards the legs and helped to leg off the hips

    44.5

Broad to Silva, no run, tries to bang it on, but doesn't really get the height (ironically enough for the tall man) and it's cut off the back foot, with some control

    44.6

Broad to Silva, no run, bouncer, and ducked periscopically which probably isn't a word

End of over 45 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 232/4 (RR: 5.15)
    LPC Silva    33* (34b 1x4 1x6)      SCJ Broad    8-0-32-1
    TM Dilshan    2* (5b)      PD Collingwood    9-0-42-1

    45.1

Collingwood to Dilshan, 1 run, a good area (sing.), right up there and worked out wide of mid-on, the pair looking for a second but had to be content with a first only

    45.2

Collingwood to Silva, 3 byes, started wide and turned wider - eluding Mustard's clutching paw - and that will go down as byes, somehow

Collingwood's furious with himself for that delivery

    45.3

Collingwood to Dilshan, 1 run, short and somehow climbing, the batsman getting right over the pull to swivel it in front of square

    45.4

Collingwood to Silva, OUT, Silva had decided enough was enough there, but unfortunately for him it was... hooking right down the throat of deep square leg

    LPC Silva c Cook b Collingwood 33 (53m 36b 1x4 1x6) SR: 91.66

He connected well enough, with a crisp "thlock", but sadly picked out the fielder. Still, he too has helped with the platform

    45.5

Collingwood to Dilshan, no run, outside off, width, but cut into the ground

    45.6

Collingwood to Dilshan, no run, outside off and driven forward to Collingwood

That's the end of his spell, 2 for 44 from ten. Broad continues

End of over 46 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 237/5 (RR: 5.15)

    46.1

Broad to Mubarak, 1 run, across the left hander, worked into the off-side

    46.2

Broad to Dilshan, 1 wide, outside off, wide on height terms. Broad is particularly unhappy about that, explaining to the umpire that he thought the batsman was ducking

    46.2

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, outside off again, cut off the back foot to point

    46.3

Broad to Mubarak, OUT, hooked low and straight: Anderson runs in hard from long leg and slides in to take a well-judged catch on his knees

    J Mubarak c Anderson b Broad 1 (4m 2b 0x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

    46.4

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, on leg, swivelled round behind square

    46.5

Broad to Maharoof, FOUR, outside off lashed over backward point for four off the back foot - a very good shot on this surface

    46.6

Broad to Maharoof, 1 run, short and flat-pulled straightish towards mid-off; like a flat cut, really. Anyway, he retains the strike

    47.3

Sidebottom to Maharoof, 1 run, outside off, dug up and over towards cover

    47.4

Sidebottom to Dilshan, 1 run, driven on the up to extra cover

    47.5

Sidebottom to Maharoof, 1 run, across the right hander, driven out to the covers

    47.6

Sidebottom to Dilshan, no run, outside off and the batsman makes a vain stab to cut away from his body

End of over 48 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 251/6 (RR: 5.22)

    48.2

Broad to Maharoof, FOUR, driven off the back foot through extra cover

    48.4

Broad to Maharoof, 2 runs, scooped off the back foot through a very straight long-on

    48.5

Broad to Maharoof, 1 run, short and the batsman frees his arms to try to smash through square leg, but finds Shah there, marshalling

    48.6

Broad to Dilshan, no run, short delivery hops over the bat

6.30pm For all fans of Andrew Miller, picture this. He's just gone outside in the rain and discovered a hole in his shoe. As a result, he has wet socks. They have just been removed and are sitting - steaming - on the radiator. [edit: lies, all lies]

Close This innings may have felt stultified at times, but it wasn't helped by the pitch and Sri Lanka will be more than happy with reaching 269 for 7. Some good batting all the way down, but England's bowlers recovered towards the end.
