England tour of Sri Lanka, 2007/08 / Commentary

England in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 4th ODI

Sri Lanka v England

England won by 5 wickets (with 19 balls remaining)

England are jogging out under scorching, sapping heat. The Sri Lankan openers follow them and it'll be the young Tharanga to take the first ball from Anderson.

Martin, the boss - or chef - is here alongside his sous chef, Andrew. Next to him and sharing the dish cleaning duties with me is old Gnasher. Hello to all three of you reading by your mobile.

Good morning, good afternoon and, for the night owls out there, good evening to one and all. We're all up for this monumental match and trust you all are too. Not long to go now so go and stick the kettle on or charge your glasses with something appropriate.

2.20pm Your commentators today will be Andrew Miller, Martin Williamson and, to kick things off, Will Luke. This is massive.

2.10pm The pitch inspection throws up few surprises. It might spin, it might not. It might swing, it might not. The most incisive comment since last winter when Robin Jackman admitted on air that he "didn't have a clue" what the Cape Town pitch would do.

Now, we are not ones for flogging things unnecessarily, but check out Cricinfo MobiCast which enables you to follow our ball-by-ball commentary on your mobile. It really is rather tasty ... give it a try.

2.05pm Sri Lanka have won the toss and will bat in the heat of Colombo. A loud cheer as the PA makes the announcement. "I'll have a bat," grins Mahela Jayawardene. "It looks a good wicket. It's hotter, more humid and sticky."

"We've bowled well so far and hopefully we can go out and do the same today," says Paul Collingwood. "Hopefully there'll be some seam movement in the pitch. We need a win to clinch the series and hopefully we'll get that." If hope wins matches, England are favourites.

England are unchanged, for Sri Lanka there is one enforced replacement as Kaushal Lokuarachchi, the legspinner, replaces Farveez Maharoof who suffered a back spasm during the third match.

2.00pm Good morning and welcome to the fourth ODI between England and Sri Lanka from Colombo. England come to the capital with a 2-1 lead from Dambulla. Sadly, the media coverage of this series in the UK has been minimal as all eyes have been on the rugby World Cup in France. That might ... only might ... change if England wrap up their first ODI series win in Sri Lanka.

England field the same side for the fourth game in a row ... so still no place for Monty Panesar.

0.1

Anderson to Tharanga, FOUR, useless start from Anderson, winging this miles down the leg side and Tharanga flicks this down to a vacant fine leg

Disappointingly, the ball boy on the boundary fumbles it. He's not quite awake yet

0.2

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, better from Anderson this time, on middle-and-off - cutting back into the left-hander, too - and it's calmly pushed out to short midwicket

The slips all do star-jump-esque appeals, but only because it was on target

0.3

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 wide, another cracker from Anderson, this one miles outside the off stump and swinging even wider

0.3

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, left alone outside off. Tighter line

0.4

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, two in a row from Anderson as this one swings back into the left-hander who clamps down on it

0.5

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, left alone outside off

0.6

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, clumped on the front foot to mid-off and there ends a fairly uninspiring first over

End of over 1 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 5/0 (RR: 5.00)
WU Tharanga    4* (6b 1x4)      JM Anderson    1-0-5-0
ST Jayasuriya    0* (0b)

Ryan Sidebottom avec le massive hair, which continues to balloon in size like a rogue state, is into the attack and over the wicket

1.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, good start. On off stump, it's firmly blocked out on the front foot

1.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, full and straight - excellent probing line which is cautiously defended, head right over the ball

1.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, straighter still this time and Jayasuriya is tempted to push this to leg but, instead, just clamps down on it and pushes it rather dismissively away to the leg side

1.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, another inch straighter still from Sidebottom and the left hander nudges this with greater force to the leg side, but without great purpose

1.5

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, a cracker, this - that's the line. In the channel outside his off stump but it's very well left by Jayasuriya who comes forward to shoulder arms

The slips and wicketkeeper loved that. "Oh" was the general consensus

1.6

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, spearing into his off stump, it's defended solidly

Terrific first over from Sidebottom

End of over 2 (maiden) Sri Lanka 5/0 (RR: 2.50)
ST Jayasuriya    0* (6b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-1-0-0
WU Tharanga    4* (6b 1x4)      JM Anderson    1-0-5-0

2.1

Anderson to Tharanga, 1 wide, massively wide. Anderson's left his line and length in the dressing room I think. Vastly wide of the off stump, the left hander goes for a massive swipe and misses it completely

2.1

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, still too wide, but it's left alone this time

Apparently Owais Shah did a lot of bowling in the warm-ups this morning

2.2

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, that's much better: straight, full and firmly blocked out

2.3

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, and this time Anderson syncs both his line and length to produce his best ball of the day so far, jumping up on the left hander who plays it quite awkwardly out to cover

2.4

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, a touch fuller, it's pushed out to cover

Second slip's disappeared somewhere else

2.5

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, full and straight, pushed back to the bowler

2.6

Anderson to Tharanga, no run, defended back to the bowler

End of over 3 (1 run) Sri Lanka 6/0 (RR: 2.00)
WU Tharanga    4* (12b 1x4)      JM Anderson    2-0-6-0
ST Jayasuriya    0* (6b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-1-0-0

3.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, very good ball indeed, lovely bowling so far from Sidebottom. Excellent pace swinging into the left hander before it cuts away at the last moment. Competently played nevertheless as he shoulders arms

3.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, close! More seam movement for Sidebottom as this cuts away from Jayasuriya's fishing, swishing drive outside off

3.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, tighter line this time attacking Jayasuriya's off stump. He comes solidly forward, though, barn-dooring this back to the bowler

3.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 1 run, late cut down to third man, the first stray from Sidebottom which is dispatched...though without great power

3.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, an away-swinger outside off which he leaves alone in the style of Jack Russell

What a super leaver Jack was, too

3.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, OUT, gone! Reward for Sidebottom's excellent control this morning as he finds another away-swinger which leaves Tharanga at the very last moment, handing first slip a comfortable catch at waist height

WU Tharanga c Shah b Sidebottom 4 (16m 14b 1x4 0x6) SR: 28.57

End of over 4 (1 run) Sri Lanka 7/1 (RR: 1.75)
     RJ Sidebottom    2-1-1-1
ST Jayasuriya    1* (10b)      JM Anderson    2-0-6-0

4.1

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, good start from Anderson, attacking his off stump and it's solidly smothered by the batsman

4.2

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, pretty good bouncer that, keeping Jayasuriya on the back foot and he isn't tempted to hook...instead ducking beneath it. Anderson glares without conviction

4.3

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, short of a length, it's pushed out to cover off the back foot

Good, tight lines these

4.4

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 2 leg byes, on his legs, Jayasuriya tries to flick this over midwicket but it's too full and the ball wobbles off his pads meekly for a single

Hello to all you winners reading on your mobile. I wonder where you're reading from...

4.5

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, just short of a length, defended on the back foot

4.6

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, defended on the back foot to end a decent, tight over

End of over 5 (2 runs, maiden) Sri Lanka 9/1 (RR: 1.80)
ST Jayasuriya    1* (16b)      JM Anderson    3-1-6-0
KC Sangakkara    0* (0b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-1-1-1

Excellent start this from England. They're buzzing, in spite of the sapping heat. It's the erudite Sangakkara to face Sidebottom

5.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, well bowled. A tight line and nagging length, Sangakkara clamps down on it on the front foot

5.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, a tough straighter but not straight enough for the left hander to work to leg. It's blocked out on the front foot

5.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, firmly defended once again on the back foot. No swing this time for Sidebottom

5.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 wide, close...close. This really is an impressive spell from Sidebottom. Just short of a length the left hander was so nearly tempted into driving, but left it alone at the last moment

5.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, too straight and he works it to mid-on, but there's too much power in the stroke and they can't steal a single

5.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, guided out to cover off the back foot

5.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, a touch of width and he capitalises on it, back-cutting it past the lone slip and down to a squareish third man whose dive parries the ball over the rope. A shackles-breaking boundary there

End of over 6 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 14/1 (RR: 2.33)
KC Sangakkara    4* (6b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-1-6-1
ST Jayasuriya    1* (16b)      JM Anderson    3-1-6-0

6.1

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, on his legs but just threatening to cut away from the left hander who tentatively punches it back to Anderson

6.2

Anderson to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, the first stroke of real flourish from Jayasuriya today who whips this from middle through midwicket. No great power in the stroke but effectively smudged through the gap

6.3

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, very full this time, Jayasuriya tries to punch this down the ground but is again bereft of timing

6.4

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, wild! Madness from Jayasuriya who eyes up a ball slanting across him, tries to swing it over midwicket but gets a thick inside edge

England's close-in fielders all roar their disgust

6.5

Anderson to Jayasuriya, no run, flicked off his legs but fine-leg is short and lurking

6.6

Anderson to Jayasuriya, OUT, got him! A fine piece of bowling - the slower ball which Jayasuriya misread and attempted to chip over mid-off. Pietersen nearly made a complete cabbage of it, but took it face height at the second attempt

ST Jayasuriya c Pietersen b Anderson 3 (30m 22b 0x4 0x6) SR: 13.63

A huge wicket, that. He never looked at all settled and it's just reward for Anderson who, in the most part, has bowled with impressive control (give or take the odd wide...) Monstrous start for England. They look well on top of their game (indeed, on top of Sri Lanka's too)

End of over 7 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 16/2 (RR: 2.28)
     JM Anderson    4-1-8-1
KC Sangakkara    4* (6b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-1-6-1

The captain, Mahela Jayawardene, receives a rousing welcome from the home crowd. And a good crowd it is too, as it has been all series. Horns are blowing, people are dancing and they're all having a winning time of it

7.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, firmly blocked out on the back foot

7.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, very good line! In Sangakkara's corridor who watchfully leaves it alone, some two or three inches from his off stump

Sidebottom is completely on top of his game today

7.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, commentator's curse. A bit of a stray down the leg side this time but the left hander can't capitalise, nurdling it to a short midwicket

7.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, ever so slightly shorter, allowing Sangakkara onto the back foot but the line is too good. It's punched to cover

This remains a belting surface, by the way. That Sri Lanka are 16 for 2 after nearly 8 overs is entirely due to England's bowling (and confidence)

7.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, fuller, spearing into his off stump and it's nudged to leg for a single

Jayawardene, the right hander, on strike. Sidebottom's still over the wicket, though

7.6

Sidebottom to Jayawardene, no run, on middle stump it's firmly defended

End of over 8 (1 run) Sri Lanka 17/2 (RR: 2.12)
DPMD Jayawardene    0* (1b)      RJ Sidebottom    4-1-7-1
KC Sangakkara    5* (11b 1x4)      JM Anderson    4-1-8-1

8.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakarra shuffles across his stumps before shouldering arms

8.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, 2 runs, neat stroke. Sangakkara's first fluently struck drive, guiding this out to cover

8.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, bit of a stray on leg stump which is nudged to leg for a single

8.4

Anderson to Jayawardene, no run, ooh, close. Slapped with part disdain, part carelessness on the back foot which falls short of Collingwood at backward point. Neatly picked up on the half volley as you might expect

8.5

Anderson to Jayawardene, no run, and he plays and misses! Well bowled Jimmy A, shaping this away from the right handed Jayawardene who plays a nothing stroke outside off

8.6

Anderson to Jayawardene, no run, squared up on the front foot, he splurges this out to point

End of over 9 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 20/2 (RR: 2.22)
DPMD Jayawardene    0* (4b)      JM Anderson    5-1-11-1
KC Sangakkara    8* (14b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-1-7-1

9.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, another cracking ball on off stump, threatening to cut away. It's blocked out

9.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakarra shuffles across to defend

Sidebottom's giving absolutely nothing away today. Tighter than a, well...you know

9.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, ignored outside off

9.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, industriously blocked out on the back foot. Very determinedly forced off the back foot: there was plenty of guts and conviction in that stroke

Just a lone slip in. The gully also comes out and goes to a short extra cover

9.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, too straight but Sangakarra can't capitalise, nudging it to leg

9.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, excellent line again, it's defended

End of over 10 (maiden) Sri Lanka 20/2 (RR: 2.00)
KC Sangakkara    8* (20b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-2-7-1
DPMD Jayawardene    0* (4b)      JM Anderson    5-1-11-1

Pretty good spell that from me. 20 for 2. Here's Andrew, head in his hands, to try and better it. Morning all. What a lovely day

10.1

Anderson to Jayawardene, no run, outside off stump, steered off the back-foot into the covers

10.2

Anderson to Jayawardene, OUT, another one bites the dust! Banged in short, Jayawardene slashed hard outside off stump, but he got a fraction underneath the ball, and Stuart Broad at third man took a fine and fast catch. Problems mounting for Sri Lanka

DPMD Jayawardene c Broad b Anderson 0 (14m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

Hi-ho, it's Silva

Anderson adjusts his fielder, bringing extra cover in to save the single

10.3

Anderson to Silva, no run, angled in from outside off stump, defended cautiously in front of middle

10.4

Anderson to Silva, no run, short again, width as well, but Silva is not tempted, unlike his captain

10.5

Anderson to Silva, no run, lovely tight line from Anderson, once again angling in from wide of the crease and Silva defends with a straight bat

10.6

Anderson to Silva, 2 runs, short and wide, and Silva goes for the slash - Broad is in with a chance for a moment or two, but the ball lands just to his right at third man. Well intercepted in front of the rope all the same

End of over 11 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 22/3 (RR: 2.00)
LPC Silva    2* (4b)      JM Anderson    6-1-13-2
KC Sangakkara    8* (20b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-2-7-1

11.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, strays onto the pads a fraction, and is picked off for a single through square leg

11.2

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, outside off stump this time, left well alone by Silva

11.3

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, starts outside off stump and seams further away. No stroke offered

11.4

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, pulled down short of a length, and Sidebottom is quickly up for an appeal as Silva misses his defensive stroke. Surely pitched outside leg, and height was an issue too. Other than that, pretty close

11.5

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, drawn forward and this time defends effectively

11.6

Sidebottom to Silva, 1 run, on the pads this time, and flicked behind square for a single

Incidentally, James Anderson has now overtaken Phil DeFreitas and is the fourth highest wicket-taker for England in one-dayers (115 victims in 80 matches, behind third-placed Botham on 145. Darren Gough is leader of the pack on 234). Click here to see the list.

For now though, it's going to be Stuart Broad

End of over 12 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 24/3 (RR: 2.00)
LPC Silva    3* (9b)      RJ Sidebottom    6-2-9-1
KC Sangakkara    9* (21b 1x4)      JM Anderson    6-1-13-2

12.1

Broad to Silva, no run, on the pads, and turned into the leg-side

12.2

Broad to Silva, no run, tighter to the off stump, angling in, defended

12.3

Broad to Silva, no run, massive appeal, but given not out! That was a beautiful delivery, which squared Silva up completely and there was an audible nick as the ball zipped through to the keeper. But the umpire spots that it has flicked the pad

12.4

Broad to Silva, 1 run, turned into the covers to escape the strike

12.5

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, good delivery, wicket to wicket, defended in front of off stump

12.6

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, yorker length, slower delivery, big appeal again, but not out once again. The end of a probing over

End of over 13 (1 run) Sri Lanka 25/3 (RR: 1.92)
KC Sangakkara    9* (23b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    1-0-1-0
LPC Silva    4* (13b)      RJ Sidebottom    6-2-9-1

13.1

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, pushed into the covers and some thoughts of a quick single. But soon turned down

13.2

Sidebottom to Silva, 1 wide, poor delivery, speared down the leg-side

13.2

Sidebottom to Silva, 1 wide, the same again. Sidebottom's had a long spell in this heat. Maybe he's flagging a touch

13.2

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, better delivery, back on off stump and angling towards the slips. Defended out to point

13.3

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, width outside off stump, Silva shapes to cut but leaves alone - perhaps angling for another wide. Not given

13.4

Sidebottom to Silva, 1 run, tighter to off stump and defended with a thrust of bat and pad. Excellent quick single

13.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, outside off and defended into the covers

13.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, clipped firmly off the pads and away to deep midwicket

A less effective over from Sidebottom, but still no way for Sri Lanka to break these shackles

End of over 14 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 29/3 (RR: 2.07)
KC Sangakkara    10* (25b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    7-2-13-1
LPC Silva    5* (17b)      SCJ Broad    1-0-1-0

14.1

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, a bit of width outside off stump, still no temptation

14.2

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, tighter to the stumps but in the slot for the drive. Sangakkara opts to shoulder arms

I bet he wouldn't have done so with a few more runs/fewer wickets on the board. Real pressure here

14.3

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, defended, but uneasily. The ball bobbles off the bottom of the bat and into the crease

14.4

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, shorter but reasonably straight. Sangakkara hops back into his crease and defends

14.5

Broad to Sangakkara, 2 runs, slapped, up and over Paul Collingwood at short cover. Not timed, but the width was there and so was the intent. The ball plugs in the outfield and the sweeper cleans up

14.6

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, a bit of a mix-up in the calling as Bell swoops at cover, but rectified soon enough. Sangakkara could have been in trouble if the non-striker had been committed though. He's a bit jumpy at the mo

End of over 15 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 31/3 (RR: 2.06)
KC Sangakkara    12* (31b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-3-0
LPC Silva    5* (17b)      RJ Sidebottom    7-2-13-1

That's the end of the second Powerplay, and the start of the third. He could have three men outside the circle but opts for just two, as James Anderson returns to the attack

15.1

Anderson to Silva, no run, on the spot straightaway, and defended to cover

15.2

Anderson to Silva, no run, drawn forward in a crab-like defensive shot. Cover picks up again

15.3

Anderson to Silva, no run, drawn forward again, and pushed down to mid-on, who fields with a slide

15.4

Anderson to Silva, FOUR, too much width this time, and Silva climbs into it like a starving man. Straight off the meat and it fizzes past backward point. Sri Lanka's first boundary for 58 balls

15.5

Anderson to Silva, 1 wide, short, but too short. Silva ducks early and the ball sails over his shoulder

15.5

Anderson to Silva, no run, short again, but a much better line. Silva sways late as the ball whizzes past his nose

15.6

Anderson to Silva, no run, slightly fuller length, outside off again, defended cagily off the back foot

And that's drinks

End of over 16 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 36/3 (RR: 2.25)
LPC Silva    9* (23b 1x4)      JM Anderson    7-1-18-2
KC Sangakkara    12* (31b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    2-0-3-0

16.1

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, starts on middle and angles towards off. Sangakkara times it well off the hip to deep midwicket

16.2

Broad to Silva, 1 run, clipped down to third man

16.3

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, full and angling towards the slips, Sangakkara shuffles across and clips through midwicket again

16.4

Broad to Silva, no run, outside off stump, and nudged down to third man again

16.5

Broad to Silva, no run, outside off stump and a bit of extra bounce. Silva defends with an uncertain parry of the bat

16.6

Broad to Silva, no run, short and angling in to off stump. Defended off the back foot

End of over 17 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 39/3 (RR: 2.29)
LPC Silva    10* (27b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    3-0-6-0
KC Sangakkara    14* (33b 1x4)      JM Anderson    7-1-18-2

17.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, good bowling again - full length on off stump and seaming away. Sangakkara tries a back-foot punch but can't time it

17.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, down on one knee, and slashed through the covers. Swept up in the deep

17.3

Anderson to Silva, no run, on the spot, good line and length, and enough zip to keep the batsman honest

17.4

Anderson to Silva, no run, outside off stump, defended into the covers with a long stride

17.5

Anderson to Silva, no run, fuller length, zeroing in on the base of middle stump. Defended with a perpendicular bat

17.6

Anderson to Silva, no run, no width whatsoever. Defended once again to complete another attritional over for Sri Lanka's struggling batsmen

End of over 18 (1 run) Sri Lanka 40/3 (RR: 2.22)
LPC Silva    10* (31b 1x4)      JM Anderson    8-1-19-2
KC Sangakkara    15* (35b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    3-0-6-0

18.1

Broad to Sangakkara, 2 runs, a huge slice of luck for Sangakkara, who defends limply outside off, finds the inside-edge, and manages to just evade his off stump. Mustard does well, diving to his right to intercept

18.2

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, good work by Bopara at deep square leg restricts this to a single

18.3

Broad to Silva, no run, on a good length again and nudged out to point

18.4

Broad to Silva, FOUR, that's a lovely shot. Not a whole lot of power, but perfect timing to thread a length delivery through the covers and all the way to the rope. That'll cheer him up

18.5

Broad to Silva, 1 run, shorter outside off stump, dabbed away to third man

18.6

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, floated up into the blockhole, and Sangakkara obliges by blocking

A tenacious repair job by these two, but England still have the stranglehold. Sidebottom is back on the pitch after a bit of "rehydration". Here's Paul Collingwood - he's had a good series with the ball, and all in spite of a sore shoulder

End of over 19 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 48/3 (RR: 2.52)
KC Sangakkara    18* (38b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    4-0-14-0
LPC Silva    15* (34b 2x4)      JM Anderson    8-1-19-2

19.1

Collingwood to Silva, no run, good line and length outside off stump, with a hint of drift towards the slips. Defended

19.2

Collingwood to Silva, 2 runs, slightly more width, and Silva steers that fine towards the third man boundary, where it is intercepted just inside the rope

19.3

Collingwood to Silva, no run, fuller length, up in the blockhole and defended again, slightly uneasily it has to be said. Great accuracy from all of England's seamers

19.4

Collingwood to Silva, no run, whipped to square leg, and the shy comes in with interest to cut off any thoughts of a single

19.5

Collingwood to Silva, 2 runs, slower ball, Silva waits and waits, and dabs to third man. He decided he wanted two immediately, and Swann's shy was slightly too loopy to execute the run-out. Silva had to dive all the same, and the umpire checked with the replay to make sure

19.6

Collingwood to Silva, 1 run, another dab to third man, only a single this time

England are going very nicely indeed, though Sri Lanka are starting to regroup. Here's Martin Williamson

End of over 20 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 53/3 (RR: 2.65)

31.1

Collingwood to Sangakkara, no run, punched on the front to mid-off

31.2

Collingwood to Sangakkara, FOUR, beautifully played. It was in the slot, admittedly, but he swung through the line and picked it up over mid-on for four. Effortlessly played

31.4

Collingwood to Sangakkara, no run, pushed back to the bowler

31.5

32.1

32.2

Swann to Silva, 1 run, Silva waits patiently for this slower ball and nudges it out to the off side for a cheekily stolen single

Around the wicket to Sangakkara

32.3

Swann to Sangakkara, 1 run, too short. Sangakkara capitalises and punches it in front of square

Approaching his fifty now

32.4

Swann to Silva, no run, again too short. Silva misses out, crunching it hard to point

32.5

Swann to Silva, no run, nicely flighted on off stump. It's defended

32.6

Right then, it's going to be Collingwood to continue. Ignore that...it's Bopara again

33.1

Bopara to Sangakkara, no run, a touch too short, Sangakkara harrumphs it to point

33.2

Bopara to Sangakkara, 2 runs, punched down the ground to bring up his fifty. Easy single - in fact, they take two thanks to some winning fielding

80 balls for that, his 41st fifty

33.3

Bopara to Sangakkara, 2 runs, punched to mid-off where they should only pick up a single. Anderson attempts to destroy the stumps with the wildest of throws and again England gift Sri Lanka some more overthrows

33.4

Bopara to Sangakkara, no run, flicked to midwicket

33.5

Bopara to Sangakkara, no run, sweetly timed but without the placement, it finds midwicket. Neatly bowled by Bopara

34.1

Swann to Sangakkara, 1 run, calmly punched off the back foot out to the leg side

Now then. When are Sri Lanka going to step on the gas? They need to get a hurry on fairly soon

34.2

Swann to Silva, 1 run, here we go, he's lofted him inside out over cover and it falls short of Shah who dives...and does brilliantly to prevent four, getting his sliding body behind it

34.3

34.4

Swann to Sangakkara, no run, very well bowled indeed. Full, straight and on off stump, Sangakkara blocks it out

35.4

37.2

Bopara to Silva, 2 runs, much more like it from Silva, wielding his bat like an axe and scything this over the top. Poorly timed though

37.3

Bopara to Silva, no run, cut to point who is lurking like a leopard to save the run

37.4

Bopara to Silva, FOUR, absolutely hammered off the back foot, with no regard (or need) to keep it on the ground. Short, wide and slashed hard over point

Here's Stuart Broad back into the attack

Sri Lanka seem to be moving in for the kill now. They're cruising in third gear and about to open up to fourth and fifth. What a pathetic analogy that is, but that's all you're getting.

39.1

Broad to Silva, 1 run, good start by Broad pitching this up on off stump. Silva drops it out to cover and sprints through for a single. Another excellent piece of running

39.2

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, the left hander steps across his stumps to try and whip him over midwicket, but is rapped on the pads

39.3

Broad to Silva, no run, very well bowled. Full, straight and Silva can only guide this to Collingwood at backward point

39.4

Broad to Silva, OUT, a wide bouncer and Silva uppercuts this down to third man. Bopara runs six or seven metres around the boundary to take an excellent running catch at a comfortable height

LPC Silva c Bopara b Broad 67 (133m 101b 5x4 0x6) SR: 66.33

Excellent breakthrough that for England two balls ahead of the final ten-over push

The ball's been changed again. Murky, so it was

39.5

Broad to Sangakkara, no run, a slower ball which Sangakkara misreads, working it out to cover

39.6

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, guided down to third man for a single

Here's Andrew for the final ten. Thanks Will. Bring it on, I say.

40.3

Swann to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, nudged into the covers to rotate the strike again

40.4

Swann to Sangakkara, FOUR, one foot down the track, and a firm swat through midwicket. Picked it on line, and cleared Bell's head at short midwicket by a distance

40.5

Swann to Sangakkara, 1 run, clever play - the power shot followed by the deft shot

40.6

Swann to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, firmly played out to deep square leg, and that's the over

41.2

Broad to Sangakkara, 1 run, width for the left-hander, who drives through the covers, but without excessive power

41.3

Broad to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, short, and Lokuarachchi swivel-pulls to backward square

41.4

Broad to Sangakkara, OUT, short again, and pulled straight down the throat of deep square leg! That was a sucker punch - it was nothing more than a leg-stump long-hop, and could have done anywhere. Broad looks suitably sheepish, but that's a big wicket for England

KC Sangakkara c Bopara b Broad 69 (171m 102b 4x4 0x6) SR: 67.64

41.5

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, outside off stump, and slashed firmly down to third man

41.6

Broad to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, outside off, fuller length, angling back in, and after all that, it's defended into the leg-side for a single. That was a subtle slower ball

Collingwood to Lokuarachchi, 2 runs, clipped into the leg-side, and more good running

42.2

Collingwood to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, wicket-to-wicket, drifting slightly onto the pads, worked square without much venom, but effective nonetheless

42.3

Collingwood to Dilshan, 1 run, nudged out to point and another rapid single

42.4

Collingwood to Lokuarachchi, 1 run, slower ball with a bit of width - a quick single to the covers brings about a misfield, but they sensibly decline the second

42.5

Collingwood to Dilshan, 1 run, swept fine, but not fine enough to beat the fielder

42.6

Collingwood to Lokuarachchi, OUT, perfect line and length, noticeably quicker as well, and Lokuarachchi was beaten all ends up as he aimed a flick to leg. Well bowled, and the umpire's finger was up with Shakoor Rana-esque speed. That was plumb

43.1

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, into position early for a firm drive. A quick single to mid-off

43.2

Broad to Mubarak, 1 run, off the mark with a nudge to midwicket. No fireworks yet from Sri Lanka

43.3

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, massive wind-up as Dilshan aimed something expansive over midwicket. But the shot wasn't on and instead he stole a single off an under-edge

43.4

Broad to Mubarak, 1 run, clipped to square-leg as Sri Lanka are made to deal in singles

43.5

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, another single, this time into the covers. Tight bowling

43.6

Broad to Mubarak, 1 run, a seaming delivery to finish, nipping away from the bat, and finding enough of a controlled edge to pick off one more to third man

Very tidy over, as England continue to keep a lid on the late-innings surge. Here's Sidebottom

End of over 44 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 173/6 (RR: 3.93)
J Mubarak    3* (3b)      SCJ Broad    9-0-44-2
TM Dilshan    6* (6b)      PD Collingwood    6-0-28-1

44.1

Sidebottom to Mubarak, 1 run, outside off stump, no pace to work with, nudged to backward point and that would have been out if the shy had been accurate. Instead it's an overthrow

44.2

Sidebottom to Dilshan, 3 runs, makes room and has a swipe. Clears the man running back from mid-on, but can't quite reach the rope

44.3

Sidebottom to Mubarak, 1 run, angled towards the blockhole from outside the left-hander's off stump. Blocked out to the covers

44.4

Sidebottom to Dilshan, no run, tight line, bending back into the right-hander. Dilshan takes a step back and steers to point

44.5

Sidebottom to Dilshan, 1 run, pre-meditated sweep - that really wasn't on for the shot - but he gets enough bat on it to get a single to midwicket

England should be wrapping up their innings in five minutes' time. That won't be happening then. Still, it is jolly hot

44.6

Sidebottom to Mubarak, no run, yorker length, angling in to the legs, a bit of an appeal for lbw, but nothing doing. That's the over

End of over 45 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 179/6 (RR: 3.97)
J Mubarak    5* (6b)      RJ Sidebottom    8-2-19-1
TM Dilshan    10* (9b)      SCJ Broad    9-0-44-2

45.1

Broad to Dilshan, 1 run, on a good length outside off stump, Dilshan has a monstrous swipe across the line, but once again can't time it. Midwicket fields

45.2

Broad to Mubarak, no run, short and straight. Good bowling, and sensibly left well alone

45.3

Broad to Mubarak, 2 runs, outside off, and steered gently to deep cover

45.4

Broad to Mubarak, 1 run, short and climbing outside off stump. Pulled into the leg-side

45.5

Broad to Dilshan, FOUR, superb blow, nothing but bottom-hand in that, and lifted up and over the man at square leg. Not a bad ball at all, full and straight, but well dispatched

45.6

Broad to Dilshan, 2 runs, a fraction more width, and clubbed out to the deep. Broad's figures take a bit of a dent, but still a fine spell

Another ball-change, and a chance for a much-needed drink

End of over 46 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 189/6 (RR: 4.10)
TM Dilshan    17* (12b 1x4)      SCJ Broad    10-0-54-2
J Mubarak    8* (9b)      RJ Sidebottom    8-2-19-1

46.1

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 run, outside off stump, and steered down to third man

46.2

Anderson to Dilshan, OUT, full length, nearly a yorker, and that's the end of that. Dilshan went to mow a meadow, missed, and was bowled through his legs. Still, a useful little cameo

TM Dilshan b Anderson 17 (26m 13b 1x4 0x6) SR: 130.76

Here comes Chaminda Vaas.

46.3

Anderson to Vaas, no run, welcomed to the crease with a short ball - accurate too - and Vaas turns turtle

46.4

Anderson to Vaas, 1 run, in the slot, and clubbed back down the track. Mid-on half-stops with a full-stretch dive

46.5

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 run, width, and worked down to the man lurking on the point boundary

46.6

Anderson to Vaas, no run, a loose delivery, but ironically, the perfect delivery. A wild full-toss outside off, and Vaas was so shocked he could only pat it to cover

End of over 47 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 192/7 (RR: 4.08)
WPUJC Vaas    1* (3b)      JM Anderson    9-1-22-3
J Mubarak    10* (11b)      SCJ Broad    10-0-54-2

47.1

Sidebottom to Mubarak, 1 run, slower ball, outside off, tapped to third man

47.2

Sidebottom to Vaas, 1 run, full-length, bending back into the left-hander, clumped down to mid-on

47.3

Sidebottom to Mubarak, 1 run, another single, nudged away behind point

47.4

Sidebottom to Vaas, OUT, a low inswinging full-toss, and Sidebottom strikes! That was an attempted yorker, overpitched and Vaas was onto it in a flash. But Pietersen at short midwicket had no need to move, and toppled over backwards as the ball thudded into his chest

WPUJC Vaas c Pietersen b Sidebottom 2 (5m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 40.00

Dilhara Fernando is the new batsman

47.5

Sidebottom to Fernando, no run, yorker, well directed, and just squeezes past the stumps and through to the keeper

47.6

Sidebottom to Fernando, no run, outside off stump, and Fernando feels for it with minimal footwork. Another good over for England

End of over 48 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 195/8 (RR: 4.06)
CRD Fernando    0* (2b)      RJ Sidebottom    9-2-22-2
J Mubarak    12* (13b)      JM Anderson    9-1-22-3

48.1

Anderson to Mubarak, 2 runs, dropped - but a very good effort all the same. Mubarak went down on the sweep and lofted the ball just out of Sidebottom's outstretched grasp. To add to the indignity, Sidebottom's trousers fall down as he chases the ball to the rope!

48.2

Anderson to Mubarak, no run

48.3

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 wide, too much width to work with

48.3

Anderson to Mubarak, FOUR, that's a great strike - made room early and brought the bat crashing through the line. The ball whistled over the covers and away to the rope

48.4

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 run, dropped - short and swung out to the deep. Shah made good ground but was reaching low as he misjudged it a fraction

48.5

Anderson to Fernando, 1 run, a good yorker - the ball dribbles a foot from the stump, and Anderson in his followthrough sidefoots that into the stumps. The umpire called for the replay, but that was never in doubt

48.6

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 wide, a slower-ball bouncer, but slightly misdirected

48.6

Anderson to Mubarak, 1 run, short and swung away off a top-edge to backward point. Not quite timed, but at least Mubarak keeps the strike

End of over 49 (11 runs) Sri Lanka 206/8 (RR: 4.20)
J Mubarak    20* (18b 1x4)      JM Anderson    10-1-33-3
CRD Fernando    1* (3b)      RJ Sidebottom    9-2-22-2

49.1

Sidebottom to Mubarak, OUT, good bowling. A well-directed yorker, Mubarak stepped across to use the pace and sweep through fine leg, but he missed it entirely and lost his middle stump

J Mubarak b Sidebottom 20 (34m 19b 1x4 0x6) SR: 105.26

A slip in place for the No. 11, Malinga

49.2

Sidebottom to Malinga, 1 run, good shot - in the blockhole again, but swished away to third man

49.3

Sidebottom to Fernando, 1 run, slower ball, outside leg stump and follows the batsman as he makes room for a swing. The ploy works too, as midwicket keeps them to a single

49.4

Sidebottom to Malinga, 1 run, a flat-batted smear to long-on, but again, no more than a single

49.5

Sidebottom to Fernando, 1 run, swinging away towards the slips, and steered out to cover. One more to the total

49.6

Sidebottom to Malinga, 1 run, excellent final over. Sidebottom saw the batsman make room. followed him all the way down the leg-side, and limited them to a single.

That's the end of a tough session for England's fielders, and they've come through it well. The seamers were the stars, with James Anderson and Ryan Sidebottom both ending up with three wickets.

There will now be an 18-minute break between innings because England's fielding stint has gone beyond the allotted time. It's a tough turnaround in tough conditions, but join us again shortly

End of over 50 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 211/9
SL Malinga    3* (3b)      RJ Sidebottom    10-2-27-3
CRD Fernando    3* (5b)      JM Anderson    10-1-33-3
