England in Sri Lanka Test Series - 1st Test

Sri Lanka v England

Sri Lanka won by 88 runs

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

9.20am Good morning and welcome to Cricinfo's live ball-by-ball coverage of the first Test between Sri Lanka and England at Kandy. It's a bright, sunny day up in the hills, and the teams are out on the field warming up for what promises to be a fascinating and hard-fought contest.

Play is scheduled to get underway in just over an hour's time, but there's some team news just in from the England camp. Ravi Bopara will make his Test debut at No. 6, having edged out the claims of his rival, Owais Shah. Further down the card, James Anderson has been picked ahead of Steve Harmison, whose suspect fitness was reckoned to be too much of a risk for such a crunch contest.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Michael Vaughan (capt), 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Ryan Sidebottom, 9 Matthew Hoggard, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar.

9.30am Sri Lanka had an overnight decision to make - the extra pace of Dilhara Fernando or the extra spinner in Malinga Bandara. They've gone for Fernando.

10.05am Sri Lanka have won the toss - Michael Vaughan calls incorrectly - and will bat. "It looks a pretty good wicket and pretty dry ... it's an easy decision," beams Mahela Jayawardene. We'd have loved to have had a bat," admits Vaughan, "but it's not over by a long shot. We have to be skilled and disciplined and try to get an early wicket."

Sri Lanka 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Michael Vandort, 3 Kumar Sangakkara, 4 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Jehan Mubarak, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Chaminda Vaas, 9 Lasith Malinga, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Dilhara Fernando.

England 1 Alastair Cook, 2 Michael Vaughan (capt), 3 Ian Bell, 4 Kevin Pietersen, 5 Paul Collingwood, 6 Ravi Bopara, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Ryan Sidebottom, 9 Matthew Hoggard, 10 James Anderson, 11 Monty Panesar.

10.20am The pitch looks to be a belter and, as Jayawardene said, not any doubts about what to do when he won the toss. Ian Botham reports it's dry with a few little cracks which will open up as the game progresses. "It will get harder to bat on and the bounce will get more uneven as the match goes on."

10.25am Out come the umpires, followed by England who go into the now customary huddle, and lastly the batsmen to muted applause. At some stage I will talk you through my last innings on this ground ... it might be brief as I made 0 and ran out our top scorer ... Ryan Sidebottom with the new ball, three slips, a gully and a short leg ...

0.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, 1 run, full, swinging, dug out and a quick single to mid-off

0.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, fuller ... well, a full toss ... Jayasuriya watches and pushes gently to mid-off

0.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, FOUR, half volley this time and crisply driven to the right of mid-off, the ball races away over the dry grass

0.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, much wider, a sniff of swing, Jayasuriya has a swing and a miss which will encourage Sidebottom

The first shout of "good areas" from the commentators ... after four balls .... oh dear, this could be a long match.

0.5

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full again, clipped off his toes into Cook's boot at short leg, a shout of catch it but no way was that a chance, the ball bobbles into the leg side and that allows a single

0.6

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, fuller again, pushed back down the pitch

End of over 1 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 6/0
MG Vandort    1* (2b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-6-0
ST Jayasuriya    5* (4b 1x4)

Matthew Hoggard from the Pavilion End. Only two slips.

1.1

Hoggard to Jayasuriya, no run, right up in the blockhole, not much sign of movement in the air, kept out with ease

1.2

Hoggard to Jayasuriya, FOUR, wide and a slashing drive through mid-off, Jayasuriya really lays into that and it's four all the way

1.3

Hoggard to Jayasuriya, 1 run, sweetly clipped off his toes behind square on the on side, the man at long leg trundles round to mop up

1.4

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, better from Hoggard, straight on a length, a slight hint of swing, Vandort right into line

1.5

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, right through a tentative prod from Vandort, a loud shout from bowler and close fielders but that looked like an inside edge may have made the umpire's job that much easier

1.6

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, checked drive to mid-on

A good opening over from Hoggard ... five runs but he found the spot.

End of over 2 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0
MG Vandort    1* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    1-0-5-0
ST Jayasuriya    10* (7b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-6-0

2.1

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, outside the off stump, Jayasuriya not tempted ... for now

2.2

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, pushed into the off side off the back foot

2.3

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, angled into Jayasuriya who is caught back in the crease and the ball smacks into his pads ... far too high but encouraging for Sidebottom

2.4

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, no run, swinging away from the left hander, no shot offered

2.5

Sidebottom to Jayasuriya, OUT, a loose drive to a wide ball, Jayasuriya doesn't get remotely over the shot and he is excellently caught diving to his right by Kevin Pietersen at short cover. It was at a nice height but he had to react quickly.

ST Jayasuriya c Pietersen b Sidebottom 10 (12m 12b 2x4 0x6) SR: 83.33

Two lovely fours but Jayasuriya always gives bowlers a chance as he goes for his shots. That was not really there for the drive so early in the innings but he had a go anyway ...

2.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, fuller and defended

Warm applause for Sidebottom as he heads back down to long leg.

End of over 3 (1 run) Sri Lanka 12/1
KC Sangakkara    1* (1b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-7-1
MG Vandort    1* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    1-0-5-0

3.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, a foot or so outside the off stump, watched on its way

3.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, again left, this one cuts back into the left hander and that may well have caused a slight rethink on the batsman's part. He left it on length quite safely but it did come back quite a way

3.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, turned square and the ball squirts through the slips, Pietersen chases to the boundary but is not prepared to dive on this outfield and so is caught in two minds ... to flick back or to field ... and as he picks the ball up his foot slips and touches the boundary marker and so it's four

3.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, pushed to mid-on

3.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, back and across, turned square again in the process, but into line and safely defended

3.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, pushed with soft hands to the left of mid-on, a quick call allows a comfortable single

End of over 4 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 17/1
KC Sangakkara    6* (7b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    2-0-10-0
MG Vandort    1* (5b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-7-1

4.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, back of a length, Sangakkara into line to defend

4.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, turned off his hips into the ground, Cook at short leg dives to his right to pick up on the half volley

4.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, on a length and defended

4.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, a rather jabbed defensive prod into the off side

4.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, Sidebottom strays to leg, Sangakkara on it quickly and clips that off his pads for a well-timed four

4.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, a good response from Sidebottom, turning Sangakkara square and the ball squirts to cover

End of over 5 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 21/1
KC Sangakkara    10* (13b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-11-1
MG Vandort    1* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    2-0-10-0

5.1

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, defensive poke into the covers

5.2

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, muttering from Hoggard as he gets one past the outside edge

5.3

Hoggard to Vandort, 1 run, turned off his hips to backward square leg

5.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, firm and oh-so-correct drive hard to mid-off

5.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, better line, Sangakkara caught in two minds by some swing and the ball squirts into the on side. Never a chance but Hoggard smiles as if to say that both he and the batsman know that was his small victory

5.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, defended into the covers

End of over 6 (1 run) Sri Lanka 22/1
KC Sangakkara    10* (16b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    3-0-11-0
MG Vandort    2* (8b)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-11-1

6.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, Vandort, tall and upright, defends

6.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, driven to mid-off, not timed and the ball bobbles to the fielder

6.3

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, Vandort right into line, everything behind the ball

6.4

Sidebottom to Vandort, FOUR, slightly more width and Vandort quick to seize on it, an effortless drive through the covers

6.5

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, driven into the ground and fielded by Bopara at very short extra cover

6.6

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, outside off and Vandort opts to leave

End of over 7 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 26/1
MG Vandort    6* (14b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-0-15-1
KC Sangakkara    10* (16b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    3-0-11-0

7.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, yells of frustration and Sangakkara goes back and gets a thick inside edge which squirms past his stumps and down to long leg. Hoggard stands with his hands on his head as if done a great injustice

7.2

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, shorter, Vandort slightly surprised by that but he does enough to keep it down

Mid-off comes up so he is standing almost next to the non striker

7.3

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, outside off, slight swing, left alone

7.4

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, another inside edge as Vandort plays a slightly lazy half drive, no histrionics from Hoggard this time, and the ball dribbles to square leg

7.5

Hoggard to Vandort, 1 run, angled into the off side

7.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, outside off, no shot

India are 449 for 4 at lunch in the Kolkata Test.

End of over 8 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 28/1
KC Sangakkara    11* (18b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    4-0-13-0
MG Vandort    7* (18b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-0-15-1

8.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, Vandort not tempted to nibble outside his off stump

8.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, and again, wide and left

8.3

Sidebottom to Vandort, 1 run, shorter, punched past Cook at short leg, a single to midwicket

8.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, the widest so far, no need for the batsman to do anything

8.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, and another wide one ... lots of effort from Sidebottom, lots of running, but he's not making the batsman play this over

8.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, and five out of six left alone in the over

End of over 9 (1 run) Sri Lanka 29/1
KC Sangakkara    11* (21b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-0-16-1
MG Vandort    8* (21b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    4-0-13-0

9.1

Hoggard to Vandort, OUT, a tame dismissal ... full and straight, Vandort plays a checked drive and the ball loops gently to Michael Vaughan at mid-on ... all he has to do is stand, wait and catch it which he does

MG Vandort c Vaughan b Hoggard 8 (41m 22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 36.36

This is a really good start from England ... two wickets before lunch is probably as much as they hoped for, and they have two inside 40 minutes. Gnasher notes: "That may have been a dolly to Vaughan, but he has a history of dropping some clangers so there were a nervous few moments"

A delay as Hoggard summons Vaughan and the two have a chat before ambling back to their starting points again. The sightscreen is then moved as we have a right-hand batsman for the first time.

9.2

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good delivery, on the spot and defended

9.3

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, a rather nothing defensive push into the covers, not really any conviction, but into space and he's off the mark

9.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, pushed straight to mid-on but he's out of the blocks like a greyhound for a well-run single

9.5

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 no ball, clipped to square leg, Panesar onto it quickly and prevents the run after some "yes ...no" calling

9.5

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, on off stump, a sniff of extra bounce causes Jayawardene to take his bottom hand off the bat as he plays it

9.6

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, firmly but defensively driven into the off side

End of over 10 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 32/2
DPMD Jayawardene    1* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    5-0-16-1
KC Sangakkara    12* (22b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-0-16-1

10.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, pushed back to Sidebottom who picks up well in his follow through

10.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, whipped off his pads, well timed, and there's no way the fielders can catch that as it races to the midwicket boundary

10.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, checked drive to mid-off

10.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, Sidebottom strays to leg, driven with little effort to the left of mid-on, he barely did more than lean into the ball

10.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, feisty response, short and wide

10.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, watchful defence ... the lull after the storm

End of over 11 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 40/2
KC Sangakkara    20* (28b 4x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-0-24-1
DPMD Jayawardene    1* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    5-0-16-1

11.1

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, defended ... all very sedate

11.2

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone although he momentarily appeared tempted

11.3

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, straighter, no swing, dead-batted to silly mid-on

Vaughan is endlessly tinkering with the field ... close men here and there moving all over the place

11.4

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, wide, swinging away from the right hander

11.5

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, into the on side, nothing doing.

Vaughan moves Panesar a few yards for no other reason that to keep the batsmen thinking.

Two short extra covers for Jayawardene.

11.6

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone, a maiden over but no alarms for the batsman

End of over 12 (maiden) Sri Lanka 40/2
DPMD Jayawardene    1* (11b)      MJ Hoggard    6-1-16-1
KC Sangakkara    20* (28b 4x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-0-24-1

James Anderson comes on for the first change of the day.

12.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, a steady start, Sangakkara back and across to defend

12.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, same again, back, across and pushed to short mid-off

12.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, nothing if not consistent ... same line and length and Sangakkara right behind the block

12.4

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, slanted across the left hander, no movement and left

12.5

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, left alone

12.6

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, a mistimed attempted flick into the on side, the ball goes absolutely nowhere

And the umpires call for drinks ...

End of over 13 (maiden) Sri Lanka 40/2
KC Sangakkara    20* (34b 4x4)      JM Anderson    1-1-0-0
DPMD Jayawardene    1* (11b)      MJ Hoggard    6-1-16-1

If you've never been to Kandy, it's well worth a visit. In my mind, the most beautiful of the grounds in Sri Lanka both in terms of the venue and the city. The one drawback is the drive up from Colombo which is four hours of thrills and spills you would pay a fortune for at a theme park. And there's always the elephant sanctuary to break the journey.

13.1

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, OUT, and the drinks interval strikes ... Hoggard puts one on the spot, a sniff of away movement, Jayawardene nibbles and gets a thin but clear edge to Prior who takes a routine catch low to his right

DPMD Jayawardene c †Prior b Hoggard 1 (23m 12b 0x4 0x6) SR: 8.33

Three wickets in an hour on this pitch is beyond anything Michael Vaughan could realistically have hoped for when he lost the toss.

13.2

Hoggard to Silva, no run, another one on the spot, defended

13.3

Hoggard to Silva, no run, horribly loose drive, very strange in this situation, not timed and a thick inside edge as the ball bobbles back down the pitch

13.4

Hoggard to Silva, 2 runs, Hoggard strays to leg, Silva flicks through midwicket and Panesar chases it down

13.5

Hoggard to Silva, no run, on off stump, well watched

13.6

Hoggard to Silva, no run, defended again, ending a good over from the impressive Hoggard

End of over 14 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 42/3
LPC Silva    2* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    7-1-18-2
KC Sangakkara    20* (34b 4x4)      JM Anderson    1-1-0-0

14.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, a few yelps of anguish but all rather theatrical as Sangakkara defends

14.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara stands very upright to push into the off side

14.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, again upright to push to short extra cover

Anderson went very wide in the crease there to get the angle across the left hander looking for the nick to the slips.

14.4

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, angled across, Sangakkara shoulders arms

14.5

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, straighter, Sangakkara has to play this one and does so with assurance

14.6

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, defended to short extra cover

The second maiden of the day.

End of over 15 (maiden) Sri Lanka 42/3
KC Sangakkara    20* (40b 4x4)      JM Anderson    2-2-0-0
LPC Silva    2* (5b)      MJ Hoggard    7-1-18-2

15.1

Hoggard to Silva, OUT, a snorter, on off stump with a hint of away movement off the seam, Silva has to play, gets a thin edge and a jubilant Prior hurls the ball to the heavens

LPC Silva c †Prior b Hoggard 2 (8m 6b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

On a pitch everyone agreed was one that favoured the batsman, Hoggard has bowled superbly, putting the ball on the spot and making the batsmen play. Four wickets inside 75 minutes has left Sri Lanka in a pickle as they have a reasonably long tail and it's beginning to look for its pads.

15.2

Hoggard to Mubarak, no run, prodded into the off side

15.3

Hoggard to Mubarak, no run, grunts of frustration as Mubarak shoulders arms to a ball not a million miles from his off stump

15.4

Hoggard to Mubarak, no run, unconvincingly jabbed out, more yelps from the fielders

Mubarak looks as if he really was not expecting to be out there so soon, as if he's been prematurely woken from a nap.

15.5

Hoggard to Mubarak, no run, short, Mubarak ducks

Vaughan putting pressure on with a swathe of close fielders and lots of chatting between deliveries ... Mubarak looking very uneasy.

15.6

Hoggard to Mubarak, OUT, And another one! Again showing the virtues of line and length, the ball seams the other way, leaving the left hander, Mubarak nibbles - he had to play at it - and it's a third catch of the morning for Prior

J Mubarak c †Prior b Hoggard 0 (4m 5b 0x4 0x6) SR: 0.00

This is as good an example of how to bowl on a pitch offering little encouragement to the bowlers as you are likely to see. Four wickets in a remarkable opening spell for Hoggard.

End of over 16 (wicket maiden) Sri Lanka 42/5
     MJ Hoggard    8-2-18-4
KC Sangakkara    20* (40b 4x4)      JM Anderson    2-2-0-0

16.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, defended to general relief in the home dressing room

16.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, turned behind square for a single

16.3

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, Jayawardene gets his bat down on the ball but late ... it does the job, though

16.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, left on length, short and fractionally outside off

16.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, yelps as Jayawardene gets a bat on the ball just in time and it squirts into the leg side

16.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, angled into the right hander, he gets behind the ball for a solid-looking defensive block

End of over 17 (1 run) Sri Lanka 43/5
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (4b)      JM Anderson    3-2-1-0
KC Sangakkara    21* (42b 4x4)      MJ Hoggard    8-2-18-4

17.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, down the leg side, Sangakkara shapes to play a rather loose flick but gets nowhere near it

Hoggard aborts his run as some security guards decide now is the time to amble behind the bowler.

17.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, outside off, left by Sangakkara

17.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 2 runs, pushed through midwicket, Sangakkara calls his partner back for the second and Jayawardene has to get his whites dirty as he dives for his ground at the bowler's end

17.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, tip and run to a slightly flat-footed Panesar at mid-off, Panesar dives forward and underarms into the stumps from a couple of yards away but Sangakkara home by some way

17.5

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, that's the one that's caused all the problems ... the batsman has to play, the ball leaves him and beats the edge

17.6

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, driven all along the ground to mid-of ... with a yell of "catch it" from Prior

End of over 18 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 46/5
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    9-2-21-4
KC Sangakkara    24* (46b 4x4)      JM Anderson    3-2-1-0

18.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, safely defended

18.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara into line to block

So much depends on him now. He's been a rather bemused onlooker while Hoggard has ripped through Sri Lanka this morning.

18.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, firm defensive drive to mid-off

18.4

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, slanted across Sangakkara but it started to wide to tempt anyone ... other than Jayasuriya

18.5

Anderson to Sangakkara, FOUR, a genuine edge but the ball flies at waist height through where third slip would have been. Anderson shakes his head as well he might ... he did all he could there and ended up with four against his name

18.6

Anderson to Sangakkara, 2 runs, flicked to deep backward square leg

End of over 19 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 52/5
KC Sangakkara    30* (52b 5x4)      JM Anderson    4-2-7-0
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    9-2-21-4

19.1

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, Hoggard in a rhythm here ... posing problems almost every delivery and he starts by testing Jayawardene outside his off stump

19.2

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, squirmed into the off side, not convincingly

19.3

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, firm drive to mid-off, a good one-handed pick up to his left from Vaughan prevents the run

19.4

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, once more driven down the ground for no reward

19.5

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, well defended, right behind the ball

19.6

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, that snorts through Jayawardene, Prior yells an appeal but Hoggard is not interested

End of over 20 (maiden) Sri Lanka 52/5
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (12b)      MJ Hoggard    10-3-21-4
KC Sangakkara    30* (52b 5x4)      JM Anderson    4-2-7-0

20.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, FOUR, firm upright drive, straight at ... and through ... Sidebottom at mid-off. A limp dive and Anderson has every right to give a series of death stares to his colleague

20.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, turned into the leg side for a single into the deep

20.3

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, better line from Anderson, forcing Jayawardene to play

20.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again blocked with confidence

20.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, a big stride forward to defensively push into the covers ... a few yelps of frustration but there was no need, it was a solid shot

20.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, played from the crease into the covers

End of over 21 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 57/5
HAPW Jayawardene    0* (16b)      JM Anderson    5-2-12-0
KC Sangakkara    35* (54b 6x4)      MJ Hoggard    10-3-21-4

Hoggard finally has a rest and gives way to Sidebottom. Hoggard has 4 for 21 from ten overs.

21.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, turned late off his pads to long leg

21.2

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, Sidebottom drifts to leg, Jayawardene does no more than help it on its way to fine leg, he needed do no more in fairness

21.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, driven with firm hands to mid-off, it was in the air for a few yards but never a catch

Vaughan may well bring a man in catching there if he plays those with such hard hands.

21.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, steered to gully

21.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, patted to mid-on

21.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, straight and blocked

"In case you're interested," chirps Andrew Miller, "Hoggard now averages 26.11 on the subcontinent, with 47 wickets in 13 Tests. Which is rather good."

End of over 22 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 62/5
HAPW Jayawardene    4* (21b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    7-0-29-1
KC Sangakkara    36* (55b 6x4)      JM Anderson    5-2-12-0

22.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, angled across Sangakkara who starts to play but pulls his bat inside the line in good time

22.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, driven off the toe-end of the bat to mid-off

22.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, turned square on the leg side for an easy run

22.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, short, pulled with confidence square on the leg side, Panesar runs round from long leg but can't cut it off

22.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, pushed with good timing between cover and extra cover

22.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 leg bye, off the thigh pad, Prior scurries into the leg side to field

End of over 23 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 70/5
HAPW Jayawardene    10* (24b 2x4)      JM Anderson    6-2-19-0
KC Sangakkara    37* (58b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    7-0-29-1

23.1

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, straight and defended, Sidebottom takes almost the length of the pitch to pull up in his follow through

23.2

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again met with the face of the bat

No risks will be taken by either batsman after such a wretched morning for Sri Lanka.

23.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, a booming awayswinger which Jayawardene leaves well alone

23.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, lovely shot, another one swinging across him but too full and Jatawardene slams the ball to the cover boundary

23.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, same spot but this time Jayawardene looks like a ham as he swings and misses

Sangakkara wastes no time in striding down the pitch to have a word with his colleague.

23.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, four more but hit uppishly to the right of Pietersen at short midwicket, quite safe

Bad news for the tourist office ... England batsman Kevin Pietersen has reported losing $1,000 in cash while the team was based at a plush hotel in the Sri Lankan capital, police have said.

End of over 24 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 78/5
HAPW Jayawardene    18* (30b 4x4)      RJ Sidebottom    8-0-37-1
KC Sangakkara    37* (58b 6x4)      JM Anderson    6-2-19-0

And Ravi Bopara comes on for his first bowl in Test cricket.

24.1

Bopara to Sangakkara, 1 run, clipped to the deep midwicket boundary, Panesar sweeps

24.2

Bopara to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, he again strays to leg and once more Panesar tidies up in the deep

24.3

Bopara to Sangakkara, no run, better, Sangakkara slightly hurried in his defensive poke

24.4

Bopara to Sangakkara, 1 run, another one slightly off line, clipped of his legs to Panesar in the deep

Hold on ... poor old Monty is in the deep on the leg side to both left and right hander!

24.5

Bopara to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, Bopara finds the edge, a genuine one but at his pace that was never going to carry to second slip

24.6

Bopara to HAPW Jayawardene, (no ball) FOUR, straight, a thick inside edge and it's four all the way, albeit an involuntary one

The no-ball ensures this will be the last over of the session.

24.6

Bopara to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, firm flowing drive slap-bang to extra cover

Lunch And that's the end of the morning and without doubt, England's session. At the toss everyone agreed it was a batsman's wicket, but Sanath Jayasuriya started the rot with a loose drive and then some superb bowling from Matthew Hoggard, who took 4 for 21 in ten overs, put the skids under Sri Lanka. Kumar Sangakkara stood firm but otherwise the batting was poor, and England will be delighted to go into the break with five wickets, especially given that with Chaminda Vaas next man in, Sri Lanka's long tail is there for all to see.

End of over 25 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 86/5
HAPW Jayawardene    23* (34b 5x4)      RS Bopara    1-0-8-0
KC Sangakkara    39* (61b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    8-0-37-1

Hoggard James Anderson to open the attack after lunch.

Ayubowan and hello to you all. Will Luke here for an hour or so to take you through what will be a fascinating afternoon session. Matthew Hoggard bowled quite beautifully this morning - and for embattled followers of England, it was quite a sight to see a bowling attack fire on (nearly) all cylinders at the start of the series. It was only a year ago when Steve Harmison bowled that over. Anyway, from Brisbane to Kandy and England are doing rather well...but with plenty of hard work to do.

25.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, and he starts with a post-lunch loosener, well wide of Sangakkara's off stump who leaves it alone

25.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, and again, Anderson's radar has been left in the canteen I think

"Who are you?" Gnasher asks. Not sure if I should respond or not

25.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, straighter, but too straight and he calmly turns it off his hip behind square for a single

25.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, that's a good one to the right-hander, angling into Jayawardene who is right behind it in defence

25.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, 4 leg byes, another loose delivery, straying down the leg side and Jayawardene feathers it to fine leg

25.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, and he clamps down on this solidly to end an unspectacular first over

End of over 26 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 91/5
HAPW Jayawardene    23* (37b 5x4)      JM Anderson    7-2-20-0
KC Sangakkara    40* (64b 6x4)      RS Bopara    1-0-8-0

So then, Sidebottom to continue after lunch. No Hoggard yet?

26.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara shuffles across a little late, and squidges the ball back to Sidebottom. No great pace, and even less movement for Sidebottom

26.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, better line this time, just outside his off stump and Sangakkara rocks back before deciding to leave it well alone. Good length there

"Bopara is the first Test cricketer to have been born in Newham," notes the ever notable Martin.

26.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, straighter - good ball, this, angling into the off-stump of the left-hander who is forward in defence

26.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara is back in his crease and guiding this out to cover

26.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, easily left alone outside off. A touch too short this time

26.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, beautifully driven back to the bowler who picks it up off his laces and, in the same movement, wings it onto Sangakkara's stumps. Great athleticism there (though he missed the stumps)

End of over 27 (maiden) Sri Lanka 91/5
KC Sangakkara    40* (70b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    9-1-37-1
HAPW Jayawardene    23* (37b 5x4)      JM Anderson    7-2-20-0

27.1

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, wide of the off stump and he shoulders arms

27.2

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, oh dear. Anderson's all over the shop like a supermarket trolley with a wobbly front wheel. This is fired down the leg side

Good take from Prior. Anderson's obviously just testing the wicketkeeper here. Perhaps they had a spat during lunch

27.3

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, better, angling into the off stump - nice and full, too, and it's defended

27.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, very firmly punched straight back to Anderson who gets half a hand on it in his follow through

27.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, a pleasing clunk of the bat as Jayawardene punches this to cover

27.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, a single to a deepish cover as Jayawardene nudges this, calling immediately, and there's the fifty partnership from 73 balls

End of over 28 (1 run) Sri Lanka 92/5
HAPW Jayawardene    24* (43b 5x4)      JM Anderson    8-2-21-0
KC Sangakkara    40* (70b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    9-1-37-1

A quiet, cat-and-mouse three overs since lunch

28.1

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, on his legs, Jayawardene turns it off his hip. Elegantly played through midwicket

28.2

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, wishy, washy waft outside his off-stump - loose stroke, really. Sidebottom sent it wider and lured him in

28.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again wide of the off stump but Jayawardene checks himself here and ignores it, as he should

28.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, ever so slightly fuller, Jayawardene is a touch late on it but comes forward to punch this to point

28.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, oh well bowled - a thick outside edge from Jayawardene who, without moving his feet, got a thick edge to this drive. The ball, though, fell short of a diving Prior

28.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, and he pushes this out to cover to end the over

End of over 29 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 94/5
HAPW Jayawardene    26* (49b 5x4)      RJ Sidebottom    10-1-39-1
KC Sangakkara    40* (70b 6x4)      JM Anderson    8-2-21-0

29.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, 2 runs, neat cricket from Sri Lanka here, Sangakkara nudging this to leg and immediately calling two. They get it comfortably, too

29.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, another waste from Anderson - wide, wide, wide of the off stump and Prior shuffles across to take it, almost in front of first slip

29.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, the first real sign of an authoritative punch from Sangakkara (in the form of his life at the moment, in case you didn't know), even if it was only a defensive punch

29.4

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, ooh a tempter outside off stump but Sangakkara withdraws his bat and ignores it

29.5

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, left alone outside off

Absolutely no pace from Anderson off the pitch now. Sri Lanka might be five down, but this pitch remains a belter

29.6

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, good end to an indifferent, mixed bag of an over from Anderson. Short, rising onto the left-hander who defends off the back foot

End of over 30 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 96/5
KC Sangakkara    42* (76b 6x4)      JM Anderson    9-2-23-0
HAPW Jayawardene    26* (49b 5x4)      RJ Sidebottom    10-1-39-1

Now then, what will England's strategy be for Hoggard? No sign of him since lunch (he's not injured or anything, he just hasn't been bowling). Sidebottom to continue for the time being

30.1

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, shapes this one across Jayawardene who refuses to play at it, wisely shouldering arms and standing tall as he does so

30.2

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, a touch too straight, and a tad short too, but Jayawardene's wristy whip can't bisect the leg-side field

30.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, ah, fine shot. It was pitched right up, and he just leant on it - the ball speeding across the quick outfield, past a diving Bopara at cover, for four

30.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, straighter this time and it's defended

30.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, straighter still, and again defended cautiously

Monty Panesar's loosening his limbs, swinging his arms and flexing those fingers, readying himself for a bowl by the looks of things. Hoggard and Panesar would be my choice

30.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, defended on the front foot

End of over 31 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 100/5
HAPW Jayawardene    30* (55b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    11-1-43-1
KC Sangakkara    42* (76b 6x4)      JM Anderson    9-2-23-0

31.1

Anderson to Sangakkara, 1 run, that's Sangakkara nearly at his best, driving this on the up with excellent timing - though not the best placement, finding extra cover lurking on the boundary

Again too short and wide from Anderson

31.2

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, well bowled, attacking Jayawardene's off stump who is forward and impressively solid in defence

31.3

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, cutting back into Jayawardene who shovels it to leg

31.4

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, wide enough to be left alone outside off

31.5

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, solidly defended on the front foot, punching it straight to mid-off

31.6

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, a belated shout from Anderson who at last finds the right length. Jayawardene came forward, tentatively pushing at it and the ball zipped through to Prior. Bowler and wicketkeeper appeal out of hope more than anything

End of over 32 (1 run) Sri Lanka 101/5
HAPW Jayawardene    30* (60b 6x4)      JM Anderson    10-2-24-0
KC Sangakkara    43* (77b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    11-1-43-1

Here's Monty into the attack, over the wicket

32.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, flat, short and allowing Sangakkara to nurdle it around the corner for a single

Around the wicket to the right hander

32.2

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, well bowled, tossed up on middle stump and it bits off the pitch, Jayawardene defends

32.3

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, on middle-and-leg, a touch too flat and it's defended easily

32.4

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, drifting down the leg side, Jayawardene gets down to sweep before spooning it down to fine leg

32.5

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, ooh, wide of the off stump, Jayawardene cuts and gets a bottom edge which nutmugs Prior

32.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, tossed up this time on middle-and-leg, it's pushed to midwicket

Not entirely sure what to make of that over. A touch of turn, but his line was all wrong

End of over 33 (10 runs) Sri Lanka 111/5
HAPW Jayawardene    39* (65b 8x4)      MS Panesar    1-0-10-0
KC Sangakkara    44* (78b 6x4)      JM Anderson    10-2-24-0

Anderson to continue

33.1

Anderson to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 leg bye, down the leg side. Anderson throws his arms up in mock-appeal, if only because it brushes the batsman's pads

33.2

Anderson to Sangakkara, FOUR, shot of the morning. Nothing more than a defensive push, straight back past the bowler. Sweetly timed and he's looking in great touch

33.3

Anderson to Sangakkara, 2 runs, on his legs, it's nudged with neat timing to bring him two - and his 24th Test fifty, from 80 balls

Cracking knock, under immense pressure this morning, from a damn fine batsman.

33.4

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, quick to punish anything loose, but Sangakkara's equally solid in defence. This is nice and full, straight, and dug out solidly

33.5

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, again, a carbon copy of the previous ball and equally competently defended

33.6

Anderson to Sangakkara, no run, shuffles across his stumps to make room, nudging it to leg, but he can't time it or find a single

End of over 34 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 118/5
KC Sangakkara    50* (83b 7x4)      JM Anderson    11-2-30-0
HAPW Jayawardene    39* (66b 8x4)      MS Panesar    1-0-10-0

Monty's around the wicket

34.1

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, defended on middle

34.2

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, tossed up on off stump, he comes forward to defend

34.3

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, ooh, dangerous from Jayawardene and he gets away with it. A top-edge to a dodgy sweep - the ball seemed to grip on him, slow on him - but it fell in no man's land

Back over the wicket to Sangkkara

34.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, defended on the back foot. A touch flatter from Monty

34.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, swept around the corner

34.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, good one to end the over, tossed up on middle and he comes forward with a smothering defensive

End of over 35 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 120/5
HAPW Jayawardene    40* (70b 8x4)      MS Panesar    2-0-12-0
KC Sangakkara    51* (85b 7x4)      JM Anderson    11-2-30-0

Ah, here's this morning's destroyer - Matthew Hoggard back into the attack with just one slip in place

35.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, down the leg side but, unlike Sidebottom or Anderson, Hoggard immediately finds the swing

35.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, he comes forward - a little tentatively, but clamps down on this solidly enough

A touch of swing there again for Hoggard

35.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, sweetly driven - a copybook cover drive there. High front elbow, big stride out to reach the ball and a solid check-drive for a single

35.4

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, Jayawardene is forward, defending - not entirely convincingly

Both these batsmen are clearly wary of the Hogster, as well they might

35.5

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, bit of a waste this time, wide of the off stump and left alone

35.6

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, terrific yorker, bending back into Jayawardene who digs it out. Great bowling

End of over 36 (1 run) Sri Lanka 121/5
HAPW Jayawardene    40* (73b 8x4)      MJ Hoggard    11-3-22-4
KC Sangakkara    52* (88b 7x4)      MS Panesar    2-0-12-0

36.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, 2 leg byes, big shout for lbw as Sangakkara sweeps, misses and is rapped on the pads but it's miles outside the leg stump

36.2

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, oh hello, this is close. Outside off, Panesar turns it miles - far more than Sangakkara expected, who shouldered arms dangerously, but it's going over the top

36.3

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, nudged to leg

36.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, down the leg side, nudged down to fine leg

Around the wicket

36.5

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, solidly defended

36.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, flatter and quicker, it's defended

End of over 37 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 124/5
HAPW Jayawardene    40* (75b 8x4)      MS Panesar    3-0-13-0
KC Sangakkara    53* (92b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    11-3-22-4

37.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, left alone outside off

37.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, a thumping drive on the front foot from Sangakkara which deserves four (or at least more than the zero it earned him) but Pietersen pulls off an impressive save at cover

37.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, a slower ball, a little offie, which Sangakkara guides to cover

37.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, beaten for a lack of pace, if anything, the bat turning in his hands as he tries to drive it through the covers. Hoggard fields

37.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara leans back here, keen on going for glory with a cracking drive but he finds the fielder

37.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 2 runs, guided to deep point

End of over 38 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 126/5
KC Sangakkara    55* (98b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    12-3-24-4
HAPW Jayawardene    40* (75b 8x4)      MS Panesar    3-0-13-0

38.1

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, flighted on leg stump, Jayawardene digs it out

38.2

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, oh well bowled, there's the length from Monty - on middle-stump, and he comes forward to smother it

38.3

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again a good length, drawing the batsman forward

38.4

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, slightly fuller and neatly timed by the right hander, but not sufficiently to earn him a run

38.5

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, "catch it" is the hopeful cry of Prior, as Jayawardene defends hesitantly

38.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, FOUR, nothing hesitant about that stroke. A fleet-footed cover drive for four past point

End of over 39 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 130/5
HAPW Jayawardene    44* (81b 9x4)      MS Panesar    4-0-17-0
KC Sangakkara    55* (98b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    12-3-24-4

Monty has hit back at comments made by Duncan Fletcher in his book: "Unfortunately, I would have to say that spin was not his speciality," Panesar said in his Daily Mail column. "Duncan is a batting coach and I think he found it challenging to understand spin bowling. All the players he's done well with are batsmen. He hasn't done well with a spinner, has he? I can understand that, because batting was his thing. Spin wasn't."

39.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, bending back into Sangakkara who compactly defends, head right over the ball

Deep square leg comes in

39.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 2 runs, neat stroke. Short, and a little wide of the off stump, Sangakkara rocks back to punch this in front of square for a couple. Calmly played

39.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, left alone outside off

39.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, too wide and Sangakkara is wise to the pitch now, leaving it well alone

39.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, guided out to cover

39.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, a crab-like punch past point to end the over

End of over 40 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 133/5
KC Sangakkara    58* (104b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    13-3-27-4
HAPW Jayawardene    44* (81b 9x4)      MS Panesar    4-0-17-0

Talking of whom, here he is over the wicket

Things are just settling down nicely for Sri Lanka here. The early demons (what little there were) have been trampled on, and even Hoggard's beginning to look a bit pedestrian. It's a very, very flat pitch but Monty's gaining some bite, so he'll be in for a long day. Just think what Murali might do, though...

40.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, powerfully swept around the corner

40.2

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, 3 runs, neatly played, just guiding this past slip down to third man for three. Too full from Panesar

40.3

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara dances down the pitch but Panesar sees him coming and drops it short. It's defended

40.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, solidly punched back to the bowler

40.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, down the pitch again from Sangakkara who then punches it to mid-off

40.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, 2 runs, top shot from Jayawardene, going inside out and squeezing it out to extra cover for two

End of over 41 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 140/5
HAPW Jayawardene    49* (83b 9x4)      MS Panesar    5-0-24-0
KC Sangakkara    60* (108b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    13-3-27-4

So then. 98, this partnership now

41.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, swinging back into the left-hander who attempts to clobber it through the covers but gets an inside edge. No feet movement

41.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, solidly driven to mid-on

Martin, our boss, is politely reminding me of his "spell" in the morning: 6 for 86. I'm struggling on 0 for 54, and he's loving every moment...

41.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, clumped out to extra cover. No great pace and even less movement through the air

41.4

Hoggard to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, a bouncer, he hooks this down to fine leg to bring up an 84-ball fifty

Well played that man - a gutsy but aggressive innings, when Sri Lanka were in the mire.

41.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, too wide of his off stump, easily left alone

41.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, pushed out to cover to end the over

Here's Martin

End of over 42 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 142/5
KC Sangakkara    61* (113b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    14-3-29-4
HAPW Jayawardene    50* (84b 9x4)      MS Panesar    5-0-24-0

Thanks Will. He failed to get a wicket in his spell, so it's 6-0 to me on the day. Story of Will's life. Sri Lanka battling back gamely this afternoon after a dreadful morning for them.

42.1

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, floated up, much slower, blocked

42.2

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, swept to the man on the 45

42.3

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, waits and prods to midwicket

The Barmy Army start warming up.

42.4

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, watchful defence, almost letting the ball hit bat rather than the other way round

42.5

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, off the pads to the man on the 45 on the leg side

42.6

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, again goes back and waits before patting the ball down

End of over 43 (maiden) Sri Lanka 142/5
HAPW Jayawardene    50* (90b 9x4)      MS Panesar    6-1-24-0
KC Sangakkara    61* (113b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    14-3-29-4

A delay while Michael Vaughan sets his field for Ryan Sidebottom.

43.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, driven via a thick outside edge into the covers, into space and a single

43.2

43.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, solid defensive shot, Sidebottom throws his hands in the air for no apparent reason

43.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, confident push into the off side

He is growing in confidence as the session goes on and he and Sangakkara are now batting as we thought all the Sri Lankans would at the start of the day.

43.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, kiss of death ... outside off stump and a limp swish at one angled across him

43.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, firm-handed prod into the covers

End of over 44 (1 run) Sri Lanka 143/5
HAPW Jayawardene    50* (95b 9x4)      RJ Sidebottom    12-1-44-1
KC Sangakkara    62* (114b 7x4)      MS Panesar    6-1-24-0

44.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, very wide, Sangakkara thrusts out a pad, the ball flicks it and shoots past a diving first sip ... but no stroke

44.2

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, big stride and padded away, bat behind the front leg

44.3

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara goes back and turns round the corner, a bit of extra bounce but he kept it down well

44.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, he skips two paces down the track and lets the ball hit him on the pads

44.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, back, looking to turn to leg, but gets an edge into his pads and safely into the ground

We have a leg slip for the one flicked round the corner.

44.6

Panesar to Sangakkara, FOUR, a confident and textbook sweep, on length and line, the ball races to the square-leg boundary

The speed gun shows that was the fastest ball of the over ... it was flat and got what it deserved. He has to have the confidence to toss the ball up ...

End of over 45 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 147/5
KC Sangakkara    66* (120b 8x4)      MS Panesar    7-1-28-0

45.2

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, tighter line, defended

45.3

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, angled across once more, and Jayawardene leaves

Sensible bowling, keeping it varied and making sure that Jayawardene is not able to settle.

45.4

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, straighter once more, pushed to mid-on

45.5

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, no run, banged in, Jayawardene flicks his head back and allows it to pass, Sidebottom gives a hard-man stare but it's really going through the motions

45.6

Sidebottom to HAPW Jayawardene, 1 run, defensive push to deep cover, an walked single

The issue here in the last session might be the light as the scheduled close is quite late and we may struggle to get the overs in.

HAPW Jayawardene    51* (101b 9x4)      RJ Sidebottom    13-1-45-1

46.1

Panesar to HAPW Jayawardene, OUT, tossed up, Jayawardene prods the ball straight into the midriff of Cook at forward short leg ... he clings on using arms and stomach to gather the ball ... Jayawardene bangs his bat into his pads in frustration as Panesar embarks on a victory jig

HAPW Jayawardene c Cook b Panesar 51 (132m 102b 9x4 0x6) SR: 50.00

Chamida Vaas strides out in his 100th Test. Fine achievement, but England will be delighted to see him coming in as high as No. 8.

46.2

Panesar to Vaas, no run, looped up, nervily defended

46.3

Panesar to Vaas, no run, big shout as he ball zips off the toe ... a woody sound but no bat involved

KC Sangakkara    66* (120b 8x4)      RJ Sidebottom    13-1-45-1

47.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, Sidebottom drifts onto leg stump and Sangakkara whips it square, Hoggard round to field but lets the ball go right through his hands

An embarrassed wave to apologise from Hoggard to an unimpressed Sidebottom.

47.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, rasping square drive on the off side this time, but fielded safely in the deep

47.3

Sidebottom to Vaas, no run, defended into the covers

47.4

Sidebottom to Vaas, no run, patted to mid-on

47.5

Sidebottom to Vaas, no run, mistimed drive, he connects more with the ground than the ball and so gets no power into the shot

47.6

Sidebottom to Vaas, no run, pushed into the off side

End of over 48 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 157/6
WPUJC Vaas    4* (8b 1x4)      RJ Sidebottom    14-1-50-1
KC Sangakkara    71* (122b 9x4)      MS Panesar    7.5-1-32-1

48.5

Panesar to Vaas, 2 runs, a firm lunge forward, a thick edge onto the pad and the ball squirts wide of slip

48.6

Panesar to Vaas, no run, Vaas right forward, almost thrusting, and the power of the lunge means that when he connects the ball will fly off the bat ... as it does here, up to mid-off

End of over 49 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 164/6
WPUJC Vaas    10* (13b 2x4)      MS Panesar    9-1-39-1
KC Sangakkara    72* (123b 9x4)      RJ Sidebottom    14-1-50-1

49.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, pushed to Panesar at mid-off, he fires in a return to Prior which is more popgun that exocet

49.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, poked into the off side

49.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, far too wide, a super slashing drive off the front foot, positively Caribbean in its execution

49.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, oh, and even better than the last one, again off the front foot, almost off one knee, but this time through extra cover. A delight to watch

49.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, straighter, Sangakkara defends, Sidebottom follows through and has a word. Given that the previous two deliveries had been smashed to the rope, he might have been better advised to avoid making eye contact

49.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, watchfully blocked

End of over 50 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 172/6
KC Sangakkara    80* (129b 11x4)      RJ Sidebottom    15-1-58-1
