England tour of Sri Lanka, 2007/08 / Commentary

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100  | Overs 101-150

Slight delay (well, what's another thirty seconds between friends?) as a massive speaker is removed from the batsman's line of sight.

Excellent crowd in, and a cheery, happy atmosphere - unsurprising perhaps given this historic moment. There are fans draped over the Fort's wall which hugs the boundary, and it'll be Ryan Sidebottom to entertain them with the first ball.

Five minutes to go. Boil your kettles and charge your glasses. Here come the players. England are in a huddle, and rather a lengthy one too. Jogging past them are the two Sri Lanka openers and here we go.

"Just had the amusing site of Giles Clarke waiting for about ten maintenance men to pick the lock of his executive suite," Andrew tells us. "Things are working here, but not always at the right time." And he has more to tell us, too. "The 'special enclosure' to our left right is still being erected with fans sat beneath the scaffolding. But there's a big contingent in the ground now. The muddy banks are dry enough for the locals to sit on them without sinking."

We're nearly ready to get going here - 12 or so minutes to go. And incidentally, they're still going to try and get three sessions in which seems a trifle hopeful, what with fading suncontinental light and the like. But splendid news all round.

God rest ye merry gentle readers. Hello all, it's Will here. A horrendously cheery good morning to you all. Thanks, Jennifer, for your early morning stint. She's off to entertain a group of Australians - bon chance to her - and I'm going to take you through the first day's play at Galle.

11.45am It's now my pleasure to welcome William Luke to the commentary chair.

11.40am Now then, some team news. England's Matthew Hoggard has recovered from injury and replaces Stuart Broad. Sri Lanka have made two changes from the drawn second Test, with Tillekaratne Dilshan in for Jehan Mubarak and Chanaka Welegedera in for Dilhara Fernando.

11.30am If you're just joining us, a hearty hello. We're still a short way from the delayed kick-off here in Galle, but I can tell you Michael Vaughan has won the toss and chosen to field in the third, final and decisive Test. Teams as soon as we get them.

Meanwhile, I've been watching repeats of Neil Foster. Used to love him. And Will is in the house, so he'll be taking over soon. It's all go.

10.45am It's all going on in Australia, meanwhile, with the latest controversy sparked, and then diffused, by John Bracewell.

10.30am, it's a good time to consider what an emotional time this will be for the residents of Galle, and all of Sri Lanka itself, as this is the first match played there since the tsunami of 2004. I suggest you read this and this for starters.

10.00am local time Hello everyone and welcome along to coverage of the third and final Test between Sri Lanka and England from Galle. If you've tuned in thinking that play will get started on time then alas, I've got news for you... the start has been delayed by two hours following an afternoon shower yesterday which left the pitch pretty boggy I'm afraid.

Speaking of boggy, I'm just watching Rod 'Boggy' Marsh on a repeat of Australia's tour of England in 1985, this match in fact . Good to see a fellow J Thommo steaming in and bowling almost quickly as me... I'm Jenny Thompson in case you'd not guessed and will be joined later by W Luko, otherwise known as Will Luke.

Play is now scheduled to get underway at 12.00 local time as Galle eagerly awaits the return of international cricket, while Sri Lanka eagerly anticipate a match in which they could register their series win. A draw or a win would do them very nicely indeed.

But hey, the lovely Andrew Miller told us most of this in his preview yesterday, so why not read it and boost him up the click-count ratings?

Meanwhile, David Gower's just brought up his ton, Ian Botham has been disciplined and Kepler Wessels is playing for Australia... that's going back some. One thing that doesn't change, though, the commentator's just said that this is some rare sunshine for the English summer...

0.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, a beauty from Sidebottom first up! An absolute corker in fact, angling into Vandort before swinging away at the last minute

Four slips and a gully

0.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, and again this swings away from Vandort who tucks his bat inside the line

0.3

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, straighter this time and it's punched back to the bowler

0.4

Sidebottom to Vandort, 2 runs, outside off stump and Vandort squirts this past gully down to third man

"Back in a tick," Andrew says. "Just off to the travel agents to bring my flight forward."

0.5

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, good grief! That is literally unplayable, bouncing, swinging and seaming away from Vandort. A fast off-break to the left-hander and utterly frightening

0.6

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, solidly behind it on the front foot

End of over 1 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 2/0
MG Vandort    2* (6b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-2-0
WU Tharanga    0* (0b)

Well, what a first over that is. Excellent bounce on this surface, and it's swinging round corners it seems. Batting will be treacherous, especially with Matthew Hoggard returning...and it is he who's jogging into bowl right now

1.1

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, on the off stump, punched just wide of Hoggard but no opportunity of a run

1.2

Hoggard to Tharanga, 2 runs, ooh and this swings into the left hander who nudges it wide of Alastair Cook at short-leg - to his left in fact, but it was timed sufficiently well that Cook didn't have a hope of snaffling that

1.3

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, ripper! That's a rip-snorter from Hoggard cutting back markedly and bouncing horribly on Tharanga who is hit high on the handle. Played it well in the end

1.4

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, Tharanga's well back in his crease and defending cautiously

1.5

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, swinging into Tharanga who, without moving his feet, pings it back to Hoggard. Not a convincing stroke at all and he was late on it

1.6

Hoggard to Tharanga, 2 runs, poor ball down the leg side which is clipped. Sidebottom has the thankless task of running round from fine-leg to save four

End of over 2 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 6/0
WU Tharanga    4* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    1-0-4-0
MG Vandort    2* (6b)      RJ Sidebottom    1-0-2-0

2.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, 2 runs, too straight from Sidebottom and it's clipped through midwicket

2.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, not far away from his leg-stump here. Sidebottom's looking for that magic ball, on leg stump and swinging away from the left hander. In fact, nowhere near his leg stump - fired past his pads and Prior dives to his right to save

2.3

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, inside edge onto his pad. Outside off this time and angling into the batsman who shuffles awkwardly to leg and edges it into his pads

It really is a pacey pitch. Both batsman seem quite late on the ball

2.4

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, defended with greater conviction this time

2.5

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, well wide of the off stump

2.6

Sidebottom to Vandort, 3 runs, a streaky, thick outside edge which bisects fourth slip and the first gully (somehow). Bopara chases it down well and probably loses a stone in sweat in the process

End of over 3 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 11/0
MG Vandort    7* (12b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-7-0
WU Tharanga    4* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    1-0-4-0

3.1

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, tries to nudge to leg but is beaten by the swing. Vandort's not looking too solid just yet

3.2

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, left alone outside off by a cautious Vandort who watches the ball into Prior's gloves. Just a hint of inswing

3.3

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, on off stump and swinging back into Vandort who tries to drive, but with a closed face of the bat and the ball is squeezed to short leg

3.4

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, well he left that, but in the style of Jack Russell...pulling his bat inside the line with pantomime-style effectiveness

3.5

Hoggard to Vandort, 1 leg bye, gone, surely? A huge appeal from Hoggard and the slips roar an appeal but the Harper is unmoved. Looks like it was sliding down leg

3.6

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, excellent ball. Nice and straight, the batsman shuffles to the off side but misreads the swing and only just jabs down on it

Terrific over, that.

End of over 4 (1 run, maiden) Sri Lanka 12/0
WU Tharanga    4* (7b)      MJ Hoggard    2-1-4-0
MG Vandort    7* (17b)      RJ Sidebottom    2-0-7-0

4.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, wide enough to be left alone

4.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, 1 run, comfortably clipped off his hip

4.3

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, quick, bouncy ball outside the off stump which is (wisely) left alone

4.4

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, a waste, wide of the off stump

4.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, left alone on length as much as the wide line

Sidebottom must make them play here. Disappointing over

4.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, yes, again wide enough to be left alone

End of over 5 (1 run) Sri Lanka 13/0
WU Tharanga    4* (11b)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-8-0
MG Vandort    8* (19b)      MJ Hoggard    2-1-4-0

5.1

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, a bouncer down the leg side

5.2

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, that's good thinking from Hoggard, a straighter bouncer which tests the batsman's evasive technique. Jolly good it was too, ducking comfortably...but that didn't bounce quite as much as the previous one

5.3

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, fuller this time, allowing the ball to swing and it bends back into his legs who clips to leg

5.4

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, tries to stroke this through the off side but gets an inside edge

5.5

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, excellent ball on off stump which is cautiously defended

5.6

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, flicked to midwicket

End of over 6 (maiden) Sri Lanka 13/0
MG Vandort    8* (25b)      MJ Hoggard    3-2-4-0
WU Tharanga    4* (11b)      RJ Sidebottom    3-0-8-0

6.1

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, left alone outside off

6.2

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, punched off the back foot back to the bowler

6.3

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, that's the line from Sidebottom, just outside the off stump and it straightens on the left hander who very nearly edges this

6.4

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, a fast but wide offbreak

6.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, a waste down the leg side

6.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, wide of the off stump and cutting and swinging wider

End of over 7 (maiden) Sri Lanka 13/0
WU Tharanga    4* (17b)      RJ Sidebottom    4-1-8-0
MG Vandort    8* (25b)      MJ Hoggard    3-2-4-0

7.1

Hoggard to Vandort, FOUR, fantastic shot. Too full and driven down the ground with the straightest of bats - holding the pose, too

7.2

Hoggard to Vandort, FOUR, flicked down the leg side and Sidebottom sprints round to save it. He dives and does well...but it looks like he's in trouble, he's twisted his knee. It got stuck in the turf as he dived - horribly reminiscent of Simon Jones' injury a few years ago - and although he's up and walking, he looks in quite a bit of pain

Here comes the physio. And about three feet to Sidebottom's left is a photographer - can you believe it? Who wants a camera stuffed up their nose when they're in pain? Sidebottom summons the spirit of Geoff Boycott who shoe away the physio like a tough Yorkshireman

7.3

Hoggard to Vandort, no run, swinging down the leg side, nudged

7.4

Hoggard to Vandort, 1 run, flicked down the leg side, aerially down to fine leg

7.5

Hoggard to Tharanga, FOUR, delicious stroke; poor delivery. Full, on his pads and he clips it with tremendous timing through midwicket

7.6

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, nudged to midwicket

End of over 8 (13 runs) Sri Lanka 26/0
WU Tharanga    8* (19b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    4-2-17-0
MG Vandort    17* (29b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    4-1-8-0

This session is an hour-and-a-half, Gnasher says

8.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, nudged to leg

8.2

Sidebottom to Vandort, no run, better ball this time which holds its line on the left hander who is rapped high on the pad

8.3

Sidebottom to Vandort, 1 run, turned down to fine leg

Steve Harmison's warming up

8.4

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, again a poor line down the leg side which is nudged to midwicket

8.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, FOUR, beautiful, classy stroke here - again to a full-pitched delivery. Punched past the sprinting Monty at mid-off who chases in vain

8.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 run, excellent cricket from Sri Lanka as Tharanga drops this out to cover and they sprint through for a single

End of over 9 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 32/0
WU Tharanga    13* (22b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-1-14-0
MG Vandort    18* (32b 2x4)      MJ Hoggard    4-2-17-0

Here's Harmison. This will be fascinating

9.1

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, on middle-and-off, the batsman shuffles to leg a little nervously, angling it out to the off side

9.2

Harmison to Tharanga, 2 runs, turned off his pads, aerially, down to fine leg

9.3

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, a bouncer but it doesn't get up at all and Tharanga ducks beneath it, the ball almost shaving his helmet. Very close to heading that into the back of the net

9.4

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, dropped - oh dear. He's dropped a clanger has Collingwood at second slip. A beautiful delivery outside the off stump, Tharanga slicing it to Collingwood's right who takes his eye off the ball and somehow clangs it. Dreadful

9.5

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, nudged out to cover

9.6

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, fast, on off stump and defended

End of over 10 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 34/0
WU Tharanga    15* (28b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    1-0-2-0
MG Vandort    18* (32b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    5-1-14-0

10.1

Sidebottom to Vandort, OUT, a huge appeal from Sidebottom as Vandort is rapped on the pads. Rauf, the umpire, has a long look at it - and he's given him! Good grief he took his time, and it looked to be spearing down the leg side. And it looked to be a bit high, too.

MG Vandort lbw b Sidebottom 18 (48m 33b 2x4 0x6) SR: 54.54

Not the best of decisions, frankly. Poor old Vandort trudges off and there's England's breakthrough

10.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, well wide of the off stump and left alone

10.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, shorter this time. Kumar ducks

10.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, drifting down the leg side

Poor old Vandort. That decision from Rauf would have been a good contender for Monty's Cricket Madness, his latest DVD.

10.5

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, a waste, wide of the off stump. He's just not making the batsmen play enough

10.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, 1 wide, that is village from Sidebottom. Miles wide of the off stump, cutting and swinging wider still

10.6

Sidebottom to Tharanga, no run, left alone outside off

End of over 11 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 36/1
WU Tharanga    15* (30b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-1-15-1
KC Sangakkara    0* (3b)      SJ Harmison    1-0-2-0

Harmison's off after one over. Hoggard back on. I imagine Harmison might bowl from Sidebottom's end

11.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, shorter, gloved down the leg side

11.2

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, this holds up on Tharanga who cautiously defends to leg

11.3

Hoggard to Tharanga, no run, defended on the off stump

11.4

Hoggard to Tharanga, 1 run, punched back past the bowler. Encouraging inswing but that's neatly played

11.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, excellent delivery on off stump, swinging back and it's firmly defended

11.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, left alone outside off

End of over 12 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 38/1
KC Sangakkara    1* (6b)      MJ Hoggard    5-2-19-0
WU Tharanga    16* (33b 2x4)      RJ Sidebottom    6-1-15-1

Sidebottom has gone off, and doesn't look a happy chap. So it'll be Harmison, as I predicted - aren't I brilliant?

12.1

Harmison to Tharanga, 1 leg bye, short of a length, defended off his hip

12.2

Harmison to Sangakkara, 1 run, this sits up on Kumar who rides the bounce, dropping it to leg and they scamper a single

12.3

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, very cautiously defended off the back foot

12.4

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, ooh, an inside edge here from Tharanga. Absolutely no feet movement

12.5

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, short of a length, a bit too short really and Tharanga jumps back to defend

12.6

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, sweetly driven straight to mid-off. Very neatly timed

End of over 13 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 40/1
WU Tharanga    16* (38b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    2-0-3-0
KC Sangakkara    2* (7b)      MJ Hoggard    5-2-19-0

13.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara comes confidently forward, head right over the ball and he defends elegantly

13.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, ooh well bowled, curving away from the left hander

Hoggard is literally wringing sweat out of his shirt. It's pouring off him and his shirt is absolutely sodden wet

13.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, he drives and misses and the ball flies through to Prior. Everyone appeals for his wicket but it's turned down and England are fuming - they cannot believe it. Hoggard stares and stares at Sangakkara - disbelieving that he is still there. Harper says no - and looks Hoggard sternly in the eye to say "no" again.

13.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, Hoggard's quickest ball of the morning, outside the off stump and it's left alone

13.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, flicked down the leg side for four. That's painful for Hoggard

Replays show Sangakkara did nick it, a few balls ago - the faintest of edges

13.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, swinging in on his off stump, he punches out to cover

End of over 14 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 44/1
KC Sangakkara    6* (13b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    6-2-23-0
WU Tharanga    16* (38b 2x4)      SJ Harmison    2-0-3-0

14.1

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, nudged to leg

14.2

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, left alone outside off

CMJ on Test Match Special is wondering why Harper is still umpiring in Tests...

14.3

Harmison to Tharanga, no run, a good length and reasonable line, just outside the off stump. Defended pretty safely out to cover

14.4

Harmison to Tharanga, OUT, he's gone! Tharanga's rapped on the pads, Rauf takes his time - and up goes the finger. That would have hit the top of the off stump, though replays show the ball pitched outside the leg stump. A dodgy decision, again, but very well bowled by Harmison

WU Tharanga lbw b Harmison 16 (72m 42b 2x4 0x6) SR: 38.09

Mahela's here, the first right-hander of the day for England to bowl at

14.5

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, low full toss - the slower ball from Harmison I think. Excellent thinking and this is a very encouraging start indeed from him

14.6

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, edged past the slips for four down to third man. Guided, rather than edged - but again, a very good line

Well bowled Harmison. It's the length which has most impressed me this morning - nice and full with the occasional bouncer

End of over 15 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 48/2
DPMD Jayawardene    4* (2b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    3-0-7-1
KC Sangakkara    6* (13b 1x4)      MJ Hoggard    6-2-23-0

15.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, excellent ball from an angry Hoggard, swinging into Kumar's pads who punches it back past him

Hoggard's really fired up

15.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, on middle-and-leg, nudged to leg

15.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, quicker one on middle which angles across the left hander

15.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, again wide enough to be left alone

Sidebottom is on the boundary edge which is good news. He's coming back on

15.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, very wide, Sangakkara flays it outside off. A beautiful, lazy stroke, cutting it as though scything some tall grass

6000 Test runs for Kumar

15.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, rubbish ball down the leg side. Sangakkara flicks it for four to fine leg

End of over 16 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 56/2
KC Sangakkara    14* (19b 3x4)      MJ Hoggard    7-2-31-0
DPMD Jayawardene    4* (2b 1x4)      SJ Harmison    3-0-7-1

16.1

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, Jayawardene is compact in defence

16.2

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, the Harmy of yore, here. Well wide of the off stump and bouncing wider

16.3

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, what a shot that is - the stroke of the day from Jayawardene. The most elegant of drives, on the up, through mid-off for four. Classic

16.4

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, that's a poor ball I'm afraid, far too full and Jayawardene creams it through extra cover for four. Beautiful stroke No.2

16.5

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone outside off this time

16.6

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good line this time and left alone

End of over 17 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 64/2
DPMD Jayawardene    12* (8b 3x4)      SJ Harmison    4-0-15-1
KC Sangakkara    14* (19b 3x4)      MJ Hoggard    7-2-31-0

Sidebottom's back on the field and has grabbed the ball for a pre-lunch over

17.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, good start. On off stump, and it's defended. Kumar wants to enjoy a guilt-free lunch

17.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, FOUR, useless delivery, whipped through midwicket with ease for four

17.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 3 runs, oh what a stroke that is, sweetly driven on the up through the covers. Monty gives chase and hauls it in

Even Sangakkara's struggling in the heat, Gnasher notes. It is ridiculously hot.

17.4

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, Jayawardene is forward, confidently, and defends with Boycott-like assurance

17.5

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a straight "up and down" delivery outside the off stump. Mahela ignores it

17.6

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, turned to leg

Welcome back one and all. Monty Panesar might be opening after lunch - indeed he is, for his first bowl of the match.

Ding dong merrily to all UK readers waking up. While England face 40c heat in Galle, temperatures are struggling to rise above zero in Britain. Get yourself a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich.

Tremendous excitement here at Cricinfo towers. Our good friends at NippleCripple have sent us three t-shirts of Richie Benaud, Tony Greig and Bill Lawry - a triplet of winners and firm favourites of Cricinfo. They are quite brilliant - the perfect Christmas present for anyone who likes Billy Birmingham's 12th man tapes. I do a particularly superb impression of all three of them and, indeed, if any radio producers are looking for a voiceover artist...no, only joking.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is lunch. A curious morning, really, with free-flowing drives, boundaries, wickets, missed decisions and dodgy ones. The closer Sri Lanka got to lunch, the more comfortable they looked - and although the ball was bending around corners in the first half-hour, conditions looked much easier as the morning wore on. It could be a very long day indeed for England after lunch, in sapping heat. Join us in 40 minutes for the resumption.

End of over 18 (7 runs) Sri Lanka 71/2

18.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, too straight, down the leg side

Around the wicket

18.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up on off stump, defended solidly

18.3

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up again - nice flight here from Monty - and it's firmly blocked out

18.4

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a little straighter this time. No great turn

18.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a little flatter this time and it spits, turning massively away from Mahela who leaves it alone

That really turned

18.6

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, what a ball! What a cracker from Monty, turning away from Mahela who was comprehensively beaten

End of over 19 (1 run) Sri Lanka 72/2

Steve Harmison to open up after lunch

19.1

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, too wide to trouble Kumar who shoulders arms with ease

19.2

Harmison to Sangakkara, 1 run, excellent length from Harmison, beating Kumar who tries to nudge it to leg but gets a leading edge. They scamper for a single

19.3

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, gentle pace, left alone outside off

19.4

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, excellent line from Harmison here. Just short of a length and outside Jayawardene's off stump who cautiously shoulders arms

19.5

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, well wide of the off stump, and really rather slow

19.6

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 leg bye, flicked off his pads

20.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, again on middle. Again smothered on the front foot

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, driven in the air but safe, threading the covers. Very nicely flighted again

20.4

20.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, touch too short. Back-cut to third man

20.6

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, dropped I think! Monty kicks the turf in frustration - rare, for him - as Mahela defends this, the ball ballooning to Alastair Cook at silly point but he couldn't get a hand to it

End of over 21 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 78/2
DPMD Jayawardene    16* (26b 3x4)      MS Panesar    2-0-5-0
KC Sangakkara    23* (25b 4x4)      SJ Harmison    5-0-16-1

21.2

Harmison to Sangakkara, 2 runs, a lazy sort of drive, leaning on it through the covers

21.3

21.4

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, good pace from Harmison who is tearing in now, but it's easily left alone outside off

21.5

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, Harmison bends his back here and Sangakkara evades a bouncer with ease

21.6

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, horrid delivery, well wide of the off stump

Back over the wicket to the left-hander

Around the wicket

22.4

KC Sangakkara    26* (33b 4x4)      MS Panesar    3-0-8-0

Harmison, who is utterly drenched in sweat, is back for another bowl

Hello to the workers in the UK. It's 9am - get to it.

23.2

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, good bouncer which Jayawardene helps around the corner.

23.3

Harmison to Sangakkara, FOUR, on his leg stump, Sangakkara clips it neatly for four to fine-leg

23.4

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, much better line but Sangakkara's up to the mark and refuses to be lured into driving

23.5

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, wide again

23.6

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, left alone with ease

End of over 24 (5 runs) Sri Lanka 88/2

Good grief this is looking easy for Sri Lanka. Monty is around the wicket

24.1

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up on the off stump, nice and slow - flighted - and defended

24.2

Over the wicket to the left-hander

24.3

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, quicker, and it hurries Sangakkara who defends

24.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, punched back to the bowler

24.6

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, well bowled - again hurrying Sangakkara but he defends it perfectly safely

End of over 25 (1 run) Sri Lanka 89/2

DPMD Jayawardene    20* (34b 3x4)      SJ Harmison    7-0-23-1

97% humidity out there. Good job Tony Greig's not out there to test the conditions with his player-comfort meter...

25.1

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 leg bye, ooh well bowled, a good bouncer which hurries Jayawardene who fends it to leg

25.2

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, a little too wide to trouble Sangakkara

25.3

Harmison to Sangakkara, no run, left alone

Two slips and a gully

25.4

Harmison to Sangakkara, 1 run, good length but it's on his legs and he literally just defends it, with a dead bat, for a single to midwicket

25.5

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, again wide enough to be ignored

25.6

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, on middle, defended

26.2

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, punched back to the bowler; Monty wings in a throw

26.3

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, still too short. Kumar is quite happy to set up camp on the back foot and play him there all day

26.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, better length at long last, drawing him forward but it's smothered comfortably

26.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, skipped down the pitch, padded away

26.6

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, flicked to long-on for a single

End of over 27 (1 run) Sri Lanka 92/2

DPMD Jayawardene    20* (37b 3x4)      SJ Harmison    8-0-24-1

Harmison's going off. Not entirely sure why but something to do with his back. Anderson (poor bloke) replaces him as 12th man, and Bopara has the ball in his hand

27.1

Bopara to Sangakkara, no run, defended solidly on the off stump. No great movement or, indeed, any for that matter

27.2

Bopara to Sangakkara, 1 run, short, on his legs, pulled around the corner

27.3

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, neatly defended on the back foot. Good line outside off

27.4

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, nudged to leg

27.5

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, as ever, it's too wide of the off stump to trouble the batsman who leaves it alone

England have simply bowled too wide all day. Too short; too wide

27.6

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, pumped to mid-off. Sidebottom saves two diving to his left and there's the fifty partnership from 80 balls

End of over 28 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 94/2
DPMD Jayawardene    21* (41b 3x4)      RS Bopara    1-0-2-0

28.2

28.4

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, smothered

28.5

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara skips down the pitch again and nudges it back to the bowler. Keen to take the attack to Monty

KC Sangakkara    33* (56b 5x4)      MS Panesar    6-0-11-0

29.2

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, wide of the off stump and left alone

29.3

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, touch fuller, Jayawardene comes forward to block this out firmly to cover

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, oh that's well bowled, angling into Jayawardene who is a little squared up and angles it out to cover

29.5

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, punched out to cover

29.6

Bopara to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, back cut down to third man

End of over 30 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 99/2

KC Sangakkara    33* (56b 5x4)      MS Panesar    6-0-11-0

Right then, here's Monty

30.1

Panesar to Sangakkara, 1 run, oh dear. Yet again it's too short; yet again Sangakkara punches it off the back foot with ease

Too short, Monty. Too short. And there's Sri Lanka's hundred

30.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up on middle. It's defended

30.3

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a full toss which is punched to short mid-off

30.4

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, squeezed out to the off side. Slip scrambles to field

30.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, stroked out to cover. Sidebottom misfields

I nearly wrote misfleds then. Good job I didn't

30.6

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, too short again and it's cut

End of over 31 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 101/2
KC Sangakkara    34* (58b 5x4)      MS Panesar    7-0-13-0
DPMD Jayawardene    27* (53b 4x4)      RS Bopara    2-0-6-0

Hoggard's back into the attack

31.1

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, swinging away from the right hander who leaves alone

31.2

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good line outside off. It's defended

31.3

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, on his legs, punched to mid-on but without great power or timing or anything, really

31.4

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, very well bowled - a but of bite off the pitch, bouncing and cutting back into the right hander who is rapped on the pads

31.5

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, nudged to leg

31.6

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, again on his legs, turned with a flick of the wrists

End of over 32 (1 run) Sri Lanka 102/2
DPMD Jayawardene    28* (59b 4x4)      MJ Hoggard    8-2-32-0
KC Sangakkara    34* (58b 5x4)      MS Panesar    7-0-13-0

Drinks out there. I could do with one too. Right, come on Will - this won't get the baby bathed. What a stupid expression that is. Here's Monty

32.1

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, guess what? Another short ball, another easy cut for a two

32.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, nudged to leg

32.3

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 2 runs, this is ridiculous. Yet again it's miles too short and he cuts it

32.4

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up on middle. He drags the batsman forward for once - hurrah

32.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, Prior says "awwww" - not out of sympathy, like a doting girlfriend might say when you have a cold, but more that Jayawardene was actually made to defend

32.6

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, again it's smothered by the big winner

End of over 33 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 106/2
DPMD Jayawardene    32* (65b 4x4)      MS Panesar    8-0-17-0
KC Sangakkara    34* (58b 5x4)      MJ Hoggard    8-2-32-0

33.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, wide of the off stump, Sangakkara leaves it well alone

33.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, swinging into his legs, nudged back to the bowler

33.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, down the leg side and flicked for four to fine leg

Andrew Edgington has two questions. "What's the England body language like?" Rather rubbish, but then it is 40c and they're running around in it. The fools. "Do they have the look of a team who think they can bowl Sri Lanka out for 250?" No. Next?

33.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, oh well bowled - this beats Sangakkara

33.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, wider of the off stump but he leaves this alone

33.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, flicked to midwicket

End of over 34 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 110/2
KC Sangakkara    38* (64b 6x4)      MJ Hoggard    9-2-36-0

34.1

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short, cut out to cover

34.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, much better delivery, tossed up and drawing him forward into a defensive

34.3

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, nicely flighted on middle-and-off. Jayawardene again defends

34.4

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a nice string of deliveries here from Monty as Jayawardene cautiously comes forward

34.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, hammered into Alastair Cook's ankle at silly point. Prior demands he catches it, but unlike him Cook's hands are on the ends of his arms, not his legs

34.6

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, defended on the front foot

End of over 35 (maiden) Sri Lanka 110/2
DPMD Jayawardene    32* (71b 4x4)      MS Panesar    9-1-17-0

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 1 run, punched off the back foot

"This is in the Kallis frame of batting" roars a splenetic Gnasher

35.3

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, angled out to the off side

35.4

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, turned off his pads, again the wrong line

35.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, defended on the front foot. Good line and length, attacking the off stump. More of that, please

35.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, flicked to leg

End of over 36 (2 runs) Sri Lanka 112/2
KC Sangakkara    39* (68b 6x4)      MJ Hoggard    10-2-38-0
DPMD Jayawardene    33* (73b 4x4)      MS Panesar    9-1-17-0

36.1

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, smothered on the front foot

36.2

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, much too short. It's cut powerfully but Bopara's lurking in the covers and does well

36.3

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, defended cautiously

36.4

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, tossed up, much fuller this time and Jayawardene solidly blocks it out

36.5

Panesar to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, quicker this time, but the line's all wrong and they steal a single to leg

36.6

Panesar to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara comes forward, pushing this out to the off side

End of over 37 (1 run) Sri Lanka 113/2
KC Sangakkara    39* (69b 6x4)      MS Panesar    10-1-18-0

37.2

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone outside off. A touch of swing, but that's about it

37.4

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, cut hard and just short of Pietersen at gully. Powerfully hit though

37.5

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone outside off and a touch of swing too

"The groundstaff are starting to scurry," Andrew tells us, and it's certainly clouding over but is still quite bright

37.6

Hoggard to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, excellent delivery to finish an encouraging over. Jayawardene leaves it alone, but only at the last moment

End of over 38 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 117/2
DPMD Jayawardene    38* (84b 5x4)      MJ Hoggard    11-2-42-0
KC Sangakkara    39* (69b 6x4)      MS Panesar    10-1-18-0

Well it's getting darker by minute here, but it's still good enough for play to continue. Here's Sidebottom

38.1

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, and this is left alone comfortably outside the off stump

38.2

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, good delivery on a nice, tight line on off stump. Sangakkara gives it due respect

38.3

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, clobbered to cover, he really threw his arms at it but found the fielder...and also didn't time it

38.4

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, left alone outside off. Prior and the slips get rather excited

38.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, no run, clunked to cover. Too full, and easily driven

"There are new stress-relieving video cassettes available in the shops," Raju tells us. "Watch grass grow! Watch paint dry! Watch Sri Lanka bat in Galle!"

38.6

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 leg bye, flicked off his pads down to fine leg

End of over 39 (1 run, maiden) Sri Lanka 118/2
KC Sangakkara    39* (75b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    8-2-22-1
DPMD Jayawardene    38* (84b 5x4)      MJ Hoggard    11-2-42-0

39.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, swinging down the leg side

39.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, beautifully bowled, swinging into the left hander who pumps it with good timing back to mid-on. But...some encouraging inswing for Hoggard

39.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, punched off the back foot

39.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, firmly punched out to cover

39.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, elegantly driven with a pleasing flow of that bat - I've not had cause to say that at all, this session - but straight to cover

39.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, just a hint of swing back into Sangakkara who squeezes it out carefully to the off side

End of over 40 (maiden) Sri Lanka 118/2
KC Sangakkara    39* (81b 6x4)      MJ Hoggard    12-3-42-0
DPMD Jayawardene    38* (84b 5x4)      RJ Sidebottom    8-2-22-1

40.1

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, left alone outside off

40.2

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a play and a miss, very nicely bowled - a tired stroke from Jayawardene. Angled across him, he went for a cover drive but was beaten by the length and ought to have punched that off the back foot

Two slips in place, incidentally

40.3

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, touch wider this time, Jayawardene leaves it alone

40.4

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, FOUR, very wide of the off stump, Jayawardene flays it behind point for four. Not entirely convincing, but effective nonetheless

40.5

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, better line, left alone

40.6

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, and it's defended firmly to end the over

End of over 41 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 122/2
DPMD Jayawardene    42* (90b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    9-2-26-1
KC Sangakkara    39* (81b 6x4)      MJ Hoggard    12-3-42-0

41.1

Hoggard to Sangakkara, 2 runs, cor, that's a cracker from Sangakkara who creams this through the off side. A check drive, in fact, not really a creamer

41.2

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, Sangakkara refuses to be lured into driving at this

41.3

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, well wide. Left alone

41.4

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, driven on the up - he's laced it but Cook dives to his right at cover to make a fine stop

41.5

Hoggard to Sangakkara, FOUR, ooh, I thought he'd edged this...but in fact it was quite neatly controlled, cutting it short of point who really ought to have stopped it

Hoggard is fuming. Not a happy chap

41.6

Hoggard to Sangakkara, no run, turned to leg to finish another over

End of over 42 (6 runs) Sri Lanka 128/2
KC Sangakkara    45* (87b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    13-3-48-0
DPMD Jayawardene    42* (90b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    9-2-26-1

42.1

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a terrible delivery. Too short and pitching on his off stump, going wider with the angle. Awful

42.2

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, again too wide, again left alone

42.3

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, he's edging closer to that off stump, Sidebottom, but is failing to make Jayawardene play enough

42.4

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, 3 runs, he does play at his, and strokes it beautifully for three through the covers. Not am emphatic drive, just a checked stroke

42.5

Sidebottom to Sangakkara, 1 run, dropped out to the off side, Sangakkara immediately calls for a single and gets it. Excellent running and finally some urgency from Sri Lanka

42.6

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, better delivery to end the over as Jayawardene defends

End of over 43 (4 runs) Sri Lanka 132/2
DPMD Jayawardene    45* (95b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    10-2-30-1
KC Sangakkara    46* (88b 7x4)      MJ Hoggard    13-3-48-0

43.1

43.4

Collingwood to Sangakkara, no run, crunched to cover

43.5

Collingwood to Sangakkara, no run, squeezed out on the front foot

43.6

Collingwood to Sangakkara, no run, nudged to leg

There's tea. A soporific session, that - at complete contrast to the morning. The batsmen crawled along but were never in any trouble after lunch. England, it is fair to say, did not bowl very well at all - too short, too wide and they're probably rather too hot as well. Join us in 15 minutes for what we desperately hope will be a more entertaining session.

End of over 44 (maiden) Sri Lanka 132/2
KC Sangakkara    46* (94b 7x4)      PD Collingwood    1-1-0-0
DPMD Jayawardene    45* (95b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    10-2-30-1

Right, here we go. It's Will here, by the way, so direct your splenetic abuse this way. Sidebottom to start after tea

Hello. Welcome back. If anyone's reading from W6 at Disney HQ and would like to buy us coffee, please do. We're struggling a bit here. Food also welcome. Right, here come England who are struggling a little more than us. Ian Bell clearly hasn't bothered changing his kit which is no longer white, it's brown and muddy and he looks a splendid mess. Well done everyone.

44.1

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, outside off, left alone

44.2

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, a good line this time which Jayawardene defends on the front foot

Hoggard's lost the plot and is doing star jumps

44.3

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, down the leg side. Some wag shouts "catch it"

44.4

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, on leg-stump and turned to midwicket. Sidebottom throws his head, and tonnage of hair, back in disgust at the batsman's cheek

44.5

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, guided to cover

44.6

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good line but it's left alone

End of over 45 (maiden) Sri Lanka 132/2

Here's Harmison, who's looked pretty good in spire of the arduous conditions.

45.1

Harmison to Sangakkara, OUT, gone! The bouncer from Harmison, Sangakkara hooks but can't control it as the ball skies to Monty Panesar at deep square leg who takes a safe catch, and celebrates like a millionaire

KC Sangakkara c Panesar b Harmison 46 (151m 95b 7x4 0x6) SR: 48.42

Big wicket that. But nevermind the consequences, let's look back at Monty's catch. It was an absolute sitter but, to judge by his reactions, you'd think he'd just taken a hat-trick with Sachin as his third victim. Look at him go! He's absolutely ecstatic, and a little surprised I think too. Harmison finds the whole thing absolutely hilarious, as do the rest of us

45.2

Harmison to Silva, no run, greets him with a bouncer

45.3

Harmison to Silva, no run, nudged to leg. A good short ball

45.4

Harmison to Silva, no run, a bouncer again but this hardly gets up at all, and the batsman sways out of the way. That really wasn't too far away from his off stump

45.5

Harmison to Silva, no run, excellent delivery, very fine bowling here. Outside the off stump in the corridor of uncertainty, but Silva leaves alone

45.6

Harmison to Silva, no run, good length again, and it takes the splice of the bat - the ball zooting out to gully

Excellent over

End of over 46 (wicket maiden) Sri Lanka 132/3
LPC Silva    0* (5b)      SJ Harmison    9-1-24-2
DPMD Jayawardene    45* (101b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    11-3-30-1

46.1

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, wide of the off stump, angled across him and Sidebottom has a few choice words with the batsman for no apparent reason

Prior's having a chirp now too

46.2

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, clumped to mid-off

46.3

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, oh well bowled - this zips off the pitch and raps Jayawardene on the back pad. Beaten for pace and for inswing

46.4

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, much too wide

46.5

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, good length, good line on middle and it's blocked out

46.6

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, defended to leg

End of over 47 (maiden) Sri Lanka 132/3
DPMD Jayawardene    45* (107b 6x4)      RJ Sidebottom    12-4-30-1
LPC Silva    0* (5b)      SJ Harmison    9-1-24-2

47.1

Harmison to Silva, no run, extra pace and big bounce here. Harmison is steaming in! Great to see. Left alone by Silva

47.2

Harmison to Silva, no run, a waste down the leg side

47.3

Harmison to Silva, no run, good line in the channel but Silva won't be tempted

47.4

Harmison to Silva, no run, nudged to leg

47.5

Harmison to Silva, no run, well bowled - pitching it right up, but Silva cracks it back to Harmison

Ah now this is good to see. Harmison going around the wicket to the right-hander - encouraging sign of a growing confidence in himself. And a chance to give Silva a working over

47.6

Harmison to Silva, no run, good one which rises up nastily on Silva who defends

Another good over. No runs since tea

End of over 48 (maiden) Sri Lanka 132/3

48.1

Sidebottom to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, extra bounce, fended away behind square

48.2

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, squirted out to the off side. Good, testing line from Sidebottom

48.3

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, left alone outside off

"Once again I sit listening to the BBC," begins John, in the style of a war poet, "and following the live Cricinfo updates. Drunk." Thanks John (from Australia).

48.4

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, a jaffa from Sidebottom! Silva thought it was going to hold its line but it cut away at the last moment, turning him around and beating him all ends up. A cracker

48.5

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, and this one is pushed across him, again he plays and misses

48.6

Sidebottom to Silva, no run, defended on the front foot

End of over 49 (1 run) Sri Lanka 133/3

Harmison is around the wicket

49.1

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, punched to point

49.2

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, short of a length, rising onto the right hander who stands tall to defend

49.3

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, blocked off the back foot

49.4

Harmison to DPMD Jayawardene, 1 run, very full but on his toes and he it neatly to leg

49.5

Harmison to Silva, no run, down the leg side

Back over the wicket

49.6

Harmison to Silva, no run, firmly defended but that's a good line outside the off stump

End of over 50 (1 run) Sri Lanka 134/3
