Click here. to read a piece on Johnny Gleeson by Nagraj Gollapudi. He was a mystery spinner like Mendis, similar grip. ++++ Gleeson's moment of reckoning came in Adelaide. Don Bradman came to him and asked, "Would you like to bowl to me?" Gleeson, obviously, was more than delighted to. "He stood there, in his suit, at the batting crease, without a bat. I ran up and bowled. To get the ball to turn a fair bit I had to bowl a lot slower than I normally did," Gleeson said. He decided to play the same card that had tricked Benaud. "I bowled him that ball and he tried to let it hit the net, but it went the other way, flew up, and hit him on the hip. His eyes lit up and he just picked the ball up and threw it back to me. Next ball, I bowled him the wrong'un and then he wasn't quite sure which way to go as he wasn't reading from the hand." ++++ To read more click that link

Vinay: "According to commentary, Mendis seems to have a googly. Why does he need this though? If it is coming out of the back of his hand and also he is an offbreak bowler , is there any need? Is it that batsmen cannot pick only his flicker ball that goes the other way? If that is the case, why don't they use the process of elimination to play those particular deliveries? Like, if they see that they cannot pick a particular delivery, they should immediately know that the ball is going to spin away or slide straight? Is this possible? Or is there more to it than that?"

VINAY there is more to it. He does have the googly yes and he can flick the ball both ways, When the middle finger is bent on one side of the ball it goes one way and when he flicks it from the other half, it goes the other way. And when the middle finger is bent on the seam it goes on straight. Please see here. for a lovely explanation with diagrams. It is about the two previous mystery spinners - Iverson and Gleeson - but explains the process well. Scroll down in that page. Bad light stops play and it's the end of the day 3.

What an entertaining last session. Pure Magic. Great to watch. If Murali doesn't get you, Mendis will was Sri Lanka's cry during that phase. After Sehwag threw his wicket away, the spinners started to do the damage. Dravid was done in a beauty that landed on the middle and cut away to hit the outside half of the off stump. Gambhir was done in by the flight and then by the turn of Murali.

Then Tendulkar played Mendis well of the front foot and played Murali off the back foot. Not that he wasn't troubled. Once he tried to flick to the on side and got a leading edge and there were occasions where he picked him of the wicket.

Tendulkar's strategy was interesting against Mendis. He started stretching really forward trying to reach the pitch of the ball and played couple of slog sweeps in between to make the bowler think. Mendis went around the stumps, tried hitting a shorter length which allowed Tendulkar to play him of the wicket. It was getting very interesting when Murali did him in with a doosra from round the stumps.

Murali operated over the wickets at Ganguly, trying to trap him with a doosra. There were couple of moments of trouble but Ganguly started pushing forward and tackled him well. He started doing the same against Mendis, taking care not to press his front leg across. So Mendis hit the leg and middle line and got it to skid on and cut in in an effort to hit the pad. It nearly worked in the 33rd over - he was actually caught right in front by a Mendis skidder but they thought it hit the bat first and didn't appeal. Fascinating contest, cut short by bad light.

The play resumed and Ganguly fell to a top edged sweep before Murali took out DK who went for a slog sweep. Laxman was trying his best to be positive against the spinners in the fading light but almost got out in the last ball before bad light intervened again.

Welcome to day four. The match doesn't need any hype; it is fascinatingly poised. So let's see some reactions on the Review system

Benson on the television channel Ten Sports: It's still early days. There have been good vibes on it from the two teams. It will stop lots of controversies. It's good for the game. The game is never about the umpires; it's about the players ... When I used to play, majority used to walk. I would like to think this review system would make the players more honest. It might be wishful thinking but I hope it happens. I think we got the public more aware why we gave it out or not give it out after the review.

Boycott: I think ICC will take lots of positives with this [trial]. They will try and get other countries to try it out willingly and get to the same conclusion as Indians and Sri Lankans. I went to wimbledon where the players and the public accept it. The public in fact get into it a lot more. The only thing is I hope the third umpire doesn't take too long to take a decision.

Jayasuriya: It's good for the players and cricket. This system should remain. I think in due course the players will start walking more now.

Now let's have a look at Ajantha Mendis.

From Peter Philpott's book - How To Play Cricket - (he was writing on IVerson and Gleeson - similar mystery bowlers )

"Let's examine the method. The ball is held between the thumb and bent middle finger and spin is imparted by the flicking and straightening of that finger. The remainder of the fingers do not participate, which means that the middle finger is solely responsible for spin. Clearly your fingers must be strong, and preferably your hand large.

To allow the middle finger to flick the ball in an anti-clockwise direction (leg-spin), the bent middle finger must be outside the ball. Thus for a leg-break the hand cuts OUTSIDE THE BALL -the normal off-break position.

For the off-spin, the hand must turn inside the ball to allow the middle finger to flick the ball with a clock-wide spin. Such a hand position is that of an orthodox leg spinner, yet for Iverson and Gleeson it creates off-spin..."

Mendis to Kumble, OUT, Review it landed on a length, on the middle and skidded on almost straight, slight turn away, and hit Kumble on the front foot. He had pressed the front leg too much across. The ball hit the pad and then bounded off to silly point. Was it lbw or was it for pad bat catch? I am not sure about the latter but it looked pretty straight forward for a lbw decision. But the question is if the umpire had given it out pad and bat catch, can the third umpire say forget that, that was not out but he was lbw. Any way he has been given out. Lbw or catch, we are not still sure.

Hold on. Let's rewind: Kumble was given out. He didn't know for what. He went and asked the umpire and then Kumble decided to ask for the review. Replays confirmed the lbw decision, were unclear about pad and bat catch. Now what I don't know was whether the umpire had given him out caught initialy and then after review changed it to lbw. Any way, the correct decision has been made. OUT LBW
