India in Sri Lanka Test Series - 3rd Test

Sri Lanka v India

Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets

Overs 1-50  | Overs 51-100

Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third Test between Sri Lanka and India at the PSS in Colombo. The series is level at 1-1. The good news this morning is that the weather is clear ... for the moment.

Toss: India have won the toss and will bat.

Pitch: Arun Lal reckons it will be a slow turner in the last two days. It's a bat-first wicket. But there is some moisture which might aid the seamers in the first hour.

Teams: Parthiv Patel has replaced D Karthik and Dammika Prasad has come in from Kulasekara, who has just taken a solitary wicket in the series so far.

Mahela was disappointed with the toss and believes they have to make inroads in the first session. So, India have won a important toss. Dammika has been given the cap by the Sri Lankans.

Murali on Ten Sports: India came back very well. We didn't play badly but we let one or two sessions away. This is a good batting wicket and could turn later on. There is no competition between me and Mendis. As long as we win. That's how you play cricket. We will try hard to win this game.

Umesh Jit, our reader, is excited: "What a day 08.08.2008! The opening of the olympics and the 1st day of the last test in a great series! Not to mention the newly revamped hype over the ENG v SA series thanks to KP getting the nod! A sport lovers dream!" btw Singh is King has been released today. Kuselan too is doing the rounds!

Drinks break. Devendra offers more trivia on that much-awaited Sri Lankan movie on the king. "The title "Aba" is derived from "Pandu Aba", This famous Sinhalese legend is extravagantly portrayed in 'Mahavansa' written during the 5th Century."

For those who prefer visuals, try 3D, an animated simulation of the match complete with commentary.

12.1

Vaas to Dravid, no run, starting on leg, moving towards middle, defended down the track

Parthepan from USA: "Why does Sri Lanka keep experimenting with fast bowlers? Chanaka Welegedara, Ishara Amerasinghe, Sujeewa de Silva, Thilan Thushara, and now Dammika Prasad. Even though they're just cover for Dilhara Fernando, Farveez Maharoof, and Lasith Malinga, they should at least get some extended runs. After Murali and Vaas retire, Mendis, Maharoof, and Malinga look like a pretty good attack. But Fernando's getting older, too, and Sri Lanka need to decide on a consistent replacement for him soon instead of shuffling bowlers in and out for a couple of tests."

18.2

Prasad to Gambhir, 1 run, on the leg and middle line, flicked to long leg for a single

18.3

Prasad to Dravid, OUT, loud shout for lbw. Mahela has asked for the review. It landed on a length outside the off stump, came back in with the angle and was hit in front of the off stump line. Almost 40% of the ball was inside the mat around that off stump. Dravid had pressed the front foot too much across and couldn't get his bat around it in time. Decision still pending. Doctrove is the third umpire. Benson is talking with him. And the verdict is OUT. The virtual eye suggests it would have hit the off stump. In the recent times Dravid has been troubled with his trigger movement - he has been pushing that front leg too much across.

22.1

Prasad to Tendulkar, OUT, Tendulkar has asked for the review for the lbw. It was another length delivery coming in. Tendulkar took a half-step forward to defend. The bat came down adjacent to the pad, straight down the line around the middle stump but the ball came in with the angle, beat the bat and hit the inner half of the front pad before hitting the back pad. Was there a inside edge? Replays don't show deflection. Tony Greig, on air, reckons the sound was the ball hitting the back pad after the deflection from the front pad. He reckons that has to be given out on the available evidence. And the verdict is Out It would have hit the leg stump, which virtual eye confirms.

After he was given out, Tendulkar walked down the track, seemed to ask the umpire - well perhaps, the non striker according to my colleague - something before asking for the review. You can't use snickometers yet in the review system. If they show a replay with a snicko, I will tell you what it showed.

That's lunch on day 1. Interesting session. Sehwag and Gambhir ran away initially on a belter before Sri Lanka caught up with India by knocking out Sehwag and taking out Dravid and Tendulkar.

The debutant Dammika Prasad, with a bit of pace, has taken all the three wickets so far. Sehwag, Dravid and Tendulkar ... it doesn't get bigger than this. Super effort from him.

Join us in a short while for the second session. Try some of our products in the break. There's the Cricinfo Quiz and Fantasy Cricket. If you have a website, you can whack our scores in and make it look all professional with our widgets. For those without a TV, try our 3D animation, which is a bit of fun and there's a toolbar to make your browser into a cricket-friendly beast.

In the break, Rod Marsh, that wonderful keeper from Australia, is discussing Dravid on Ten Sports. "He is over cautious that he doesn't want to get out and is not playing his shots. I would throw balls to him in the practice and ask him to hit them. Play some shots. He still has something valuable to offer for India. He doesn't look busy right now. The greatest batsman of all time, Don Bradman, said his aim to hit every ball that comes to him for a four, if not a four, then three, the worst is one run. The idea is to look for runs. That is the art of the batsmanship."

Parthiv Patel: "It's been a long wait [to come back into the Indian team] and I am happy that I have got a chance to play. I have worked hard in the domestic circuit and have got better and more matured now. Hopefully, I can give it a best shot. We[Karthik and me] share a good relationship, we have been working hard on our techniques here."

It landed on the leg stump line, turned in slightly, Gambhir shaped to defend - the bat was adjacent to the pad but outside the line and he is struck in front on the middle and leg line.. That has to be out. It would have hit the middle and off stump. Decision still pending. Tony Greig, on air, reckons it should be out. Let's see. And the verdict is OUT. Another good call from Mahela to go for the review. He can release a dummy's guide to reviews. Virtual eye suggests it would have hit the off and middle stump.
