India tour of Sri Lanka, 2008 / Commentary

India in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 1st ODI

Sri Lanka v India

Sri Lanka won by 8 wickets (with 91 balls remaining)

9.58 am: "Not too much of a crowd in yet. A good breeze blowing across the ground. Here come the Sri Lankans," says Jamie Alter from Dambulla. "Plenty of yellow banners and flags being waved, all in support of the home side."

Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli are India's openers. Gambhir will take strike against Chaminda Vaas who is bowling from over the wicket. Today's on-field umpires are Asoka De Silva and Billy Doctrove.

Toss, 9.30 am: Mahendra Singh Dhoni has called correctly and India will bat. "It looks like a good wicket," says Dhoni. He doesn't think the grass will help the fast bowlers but says it will help bind the wicket.

Sri Lanka are playing the same XI that won the Asia cup final. Sanath Jayasuriya returns to open the batting.

Sri Lanka: 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Chaminda Vaas, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

Sehwag isn't playing so Virat Kohli is making his ODI debut.

India: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Irfan Pathan, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel.

Both teams are playing five bowlers.

9.25 am: The Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium has been a notoriously low-scoring venue. The average score here is 224 and there has been only one century in 23 matches. There's a bit of grass on the surface but there are bare patches as well. It might get slower and turn as the game progresses so batting first may be the way to go. The toss will take place in the next few minutes ...

It's George Binoy at the keyboard by the way.

9.00 am: India's tour of Sri Lanka enters its second phase today with the first of five one-day internationals in Dambulla. India are sporting their limited-overs look with a young team and energetic legs. They'll need to be sharp, though, for India have never beaten Sri Lanka at this venue and the threat of Mendis and Murali remains as strong as ever.

Muttiah Muralitharan has a bowling average of 13.34 and an economy rate of 3.28 runs per over at this ground, with 29 wickets from 12 ODIs. Sri Lanka have won each of the last five matches here when Murali has played. Phenomenal! Read more in the preview.

The weather is hot and sunny so there are no problems on that front at the moment.

There may be some pre-match problems for India though. It hasn't been confirmed yet but Sehwag is unlikely to play. He turned his ankle during practice yesterday. If Sehwag doesn't play, Virat Kohli, who led India to victory at the under-19 World Cup, may make his ODI debut and partner Gautam Gambhir at the top.

1.16 pm: Sri Lanka have dismantled India with a ruthlessly efficient bowling performance. The medium-pacers were disciplined with the new ball and three early wickets created the pressure for Mendis and Murali to exploit. The Indians looked no closer to deciphering Mendis and he finished with 3 for 21 off nine overs. He helped reduce India to 87 for 7 after which he was taken out of the attack a move that allowed India to inch towards 150.

"Guys, let's give credit to Mendis rather than continue to blast the Indian batsmen. He has to be too good to pick wickets so consistently in every game. And at an incredible economy rate too," says Adarsh.

I'll be back in 45 minutes for Sri Lanka's run-chase.
