India in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 2nd ODI

Sri Lanka v India

India won by 3 wickets (with 62 balls remaining)

Hi and welcome to the 2nd ODI between Sri Lanka and India.

Toss Dhoni calls Heads correctly and has chosen to bowl. "It's a more forced decision. We would have liked to bat but we have lost Gambhir for this game. So we will bowl first. Irfan will open. We don't have a specialist opener." Praveen Kumar has come in for Ojha. And Subramaniam Badrinath makes his debut.

Vaas has pulled his left hamstring and won't be playing this game. Mahela says,"He has been feeling a bit a stiff. We don't want to take any risks. Dilhara Fernando will play."

Pitch: Experts reckon it looks better from the first game and there should be more runs. Jayasuriya has more thoughts on it. Have a look below.

Jayasuriya on Ten Sports: I have been training hard and working hard on my game. They [Indians] bowled well. It was not a easy wicket to bat on. It was a two-paced one. You need to occupy the crease longer. We are playing well; we won the Test series and we have won the first game. We need to keep winning. I always will play my natural game. Sometimes you have to adjust. There has not been much international or even domestic games here. History says that there has been not too big totals here. 220 should be a good score."

Dean Jones deadpans: "Did he [Gambhir] stand on a ball in practice like Sehwag and got injured?!"

So Badrinath gets to make his debut. Irfan and Kohli to open. India's injury woes continue. The official word in is that Gambhir has a stiff neck. Now now no naughty thoughts please.

Jamie Alter, our man at the ground, says: "Ian Bishop and Ranjit Fernando sweating under two umbrellas down near the boundary rope. It's pretty hot out there. Small crowd gathered. " And Jamie, who has a killer of a inside-out cover drive adds, "I'm padding up, given the injuries." I can only remind him of a bouncer in a nets session. Our hero went for the pull shot - he sometimes thinks he is Ponting - and top edged it right on the jaw. No helmet and blood on pitch. The man who bowled that bouncer is sitting next to Jamie in the press box. Anand Vasu, ex Cricinfo and now the chief cricket correspondent at Hindustan Times. Anand of course reckons it was not even a bouncer but just some inept batting.

0.1

Kumar to Jayasuriya, 1 run, runs right away. Tip and run. Jayasuriya tapped a back-of-length delivery close on the off side and off he went for that single.

0.2

Kumar to Sangakkara, no run, swinging outside the off stump and left alone.

0.3

Kumar to Sangakkara, no run, short of length and again some swing. But the length is too short to trouble the batsman. Enough time to see the movement and leave it alone

0.4

Kumar to Sangakkara, no run, short of length again, this time holds its line outside off stump and Sangakkara withdraws his bat and lets the ball sail past him

0.5

Kumar to Sangakkara, no run, fuller, on the middle and driven to mid-on

0.6

Kumar to Sangakkara, 1 run, angled across Sangakkara, full in length and its run down to third man for a single

Khan to Sangakkara, no run, tad wide outside off stump, some swing again but too early and too wide to interest the batsman. Left alone.

1.2

Khan to Sangakkara, 1 run, short of length, good bounce as it shapes in a touch outside off and Sangakkara goes back to punch it to deep backward point.

1.3

Khan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full in length, opens the bat face and guides to cover point

1.4

Khan to Sangakkara, no run, swing and a miss. Short of length and width offered outside off, Sangakkara went for it , a big swish but no wood on leather.

1.5

Khan to Sangakkara, no run, closer to the off stump, a tad fuller and pushed to covers

1.6

Khan to Sangakkara, OUT, Oh he has cleaned him up. The off stump has been pegged back. Sangakkara looks stunned. It landed around a length, outside off stump and seamed back in. Sangakkara had a lazy waft, without moving towards the line and the bat came down outside the line. He even lost the bottom-hand grip of the bat handle and that took the bat further away from the ball.

3.1

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, on a length, around the middle stump line, defended to the on side

Naveen: "Calling Robin Uthappa as a specialist opener is a better option than using Irfan or Kholi. It will be a good opportunity for him. I'm sure they have no plans of calling Ganguly!"

Guru Prasad: "Its a shame that India has to make Irfan Pathan and Virat Kohli open the innings when we have to world class openers Saurav Ganguly and Robin Uthappa sitting in india laying eggs."

5.1

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, probing delivery around that off stump angling across and Mahela adjusts to push it to the off side

Jigs: "Selection of Virat Kohli is premature. I think India still have better batsman then him. Ganguly should be part of this one day team as opening batsman."

5.2

Khan to Jayawardene, no run, full and straight on the middle, Mahela leans forward to defend with the full face of the bat. Tuk Tuk cricket.

5.3

Khan to Jayawardene, 2 runs, fuller and Mahela caresses it through extra cover. He leaned forward and opened the bat face at the last minute to find the gap.

5.4

Khan to Jayawardene, OUT, Zaheer strikes with his full length and probing line around the off stump. Mahela gets forward, hangs his bat out in an effort to defend but the ball kept angling away, kissed the outside edge and flew towards the first slip. Dhoni had a half-hearted attempt at the catch before collapsing his knees and not getting in the way. The ball went to Yuvraj who juggled a bit but held on. 10 for 2.

6.3

Kumar to Jayasuriya, no run, back to short of length, outside off and holding its line, left alone again.

6.5

Kumar to Silva, no run, full but well outside the off stump and Silva watches Dhoni collect the ball

Kumar to Jayasuriya, no run, leans forward to defend a full length delivery down the track

Rajith Wijepura: "Why have srilanka put Sanga to open the innings. He is not an Opener. He is a real builder of innings. So I think srilanka have to choose Malinda or Udawatte as Jayasuriya's patner. Sanga need to bat on his usual No.3 position. For do that they need to drop one of the fast bowlers. I think 2 fast bowlers enough for srilankan bowling attack. Because they have Sanath & Dilshan who can share remaining 10 overs. Kapugedara & Chamara also can bowl few overs. So please keep Sanga on his no. 3 slot."

10.2

Kumar to Jayasuriya, 1 run, outside the off stump, tapped to third man for a single

10.3

12.6

Patel to Dilshan, no run, punched to mid-off

Ashish D makes this point: "It is high time we look beyond Ganguly.Regarding Utthapa he should play more domestic cricket to sharpen his batting. Nowadays there is a trend that once the player is selected for national side he does not play domestic cricket,so players don't get used to playing long innings; they can only play cameos. Look at Laxman,Dravid,Ganguly ... they become great players because when they entered international cricket they had a vast experience which comes from playing first-class cricket and compare to that with the current crop of cricketers - Rohit sharma's first class average-35, Yuvraj singh's first class average-42, virat kohli very less first class cricket. Let them go through the grind for few years. Then they will understand the importance of staying on the crease and get used to playing long innings."
