India tour of Sri Lanka, 2008 / Commentary

India in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Sri Lanka v India

India won by 33 runs

2.30 pm: Play is about to begin. Today's umpires are Billy Doctrove and Tyron Wijewardene. Gambhir and Kohli are opening the batting. I wonder if Yuvraj will be sent up the order for he's been struggling against Mendis.

Chaminda Vaas will open the bowling for Sri Lanka, from over the wicket. And I'm George Binoy, your commentator for the match.

Fantastic atmosphere at the Premadasa. Terrific noise and a multitude of Sri Lankan flags.

Toss, 2.00 pm: The pitch appears better for batting than the Dambulla strip but the experts say that it might get slower and lower as the match progresses. Batting first could be the way to go.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has won the toss and India will bat. "Hopefully we haven't mis-read the pitch this time but it does get a bit slow under lights," says Dhoni. They've brought back Gambhir, who has recovered from his stiff neck, and dropped Irfan Pathan.

"How many failures does Rohit Sharma need prior to being dropped . Even a cat will envy the number of lives (chances) he is getting," emails Subramanian.

"Looking at the technique and temperament of Rohit Sharma, we need such players," replies Satyam. "Although it's high time Rohit started scoring as he did initially, the selectors have full faith that they are grooming the right person for the no.3 spot."

India: 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virat Kohli, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma 7 S Badrinath, 8 Praveen Kumar, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel.

Nitin is concerned about India's bowling options. "Who will be India's fifth bowler," he asks. "Dhoni seems to have forgotten that in the last two finals his fourth and fifth bowlers have been murdered."

Sri Lanka have also made one change, Chaminda Vaas returns for Dilhara Fernando. Jayawardene said he would have batted as well and reckons that 225-250 will be a good score to chase on this pitch.

Sri Lanka: 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Silva, 5 Chamara Kapugedera, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Chaminda Vaas, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

1.45 pm: Good afternoon and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the third ODI between Sri Lanka and India at the R.Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The weather according to Jamie Alter, our man at the venue, is hot and there isn't rain in sight at the moment. The stadium is filling up and there's the usual drum-bugle atmosphere. The queues are stretching for miles outside so, if you're in the vicinity, you better hurry to make it for the start. Or you could just follow the game here.

The toss will happen at 2.00 pm and you've got about 15 minutes to make any last minute Fantasy league changes.

The series is level at 1-1 but the last three games will all be played at the Premadasa, a venue which favours the hosts. Sri Lanka have won 44 ODIs and lost just 17 here, giving them a win-loss ratio which is among the best by any team at any ground. Read more in S Rajesh's preview.

6.09 pm: India have finished with 237 for 9. It's the sort of score that Jayawardene said he would be happy to chase at the toss. Dhoni and Raina scored fifties to set up the target but Sri Lanka struck at vital junctures to puncture India's momentum. Mendis for once had an off day but he came back strongly in his final over to dismiss Dhoni, a blow that was crucial in preventing India from reaching 250.

The major news that broke a short while ago is that the Champions Trophy has been postponed because of the security situation in Pakistan. It will be held in 2009.
