India in Sri Lanka T20I Match

Sri Lanka v India

India won by 3 wickets (with 4 balls remaining)

Hello winners, set for Twenty20? Its been a while since these two teams have played one, and in fact this is the first such one to be held on Sri Lankan soil. The five-match ODI series went India's way 4-1, and Sri Lankans fans should be hoping their side can sneak in a win here before India return home.

This match will be played under lights at the R Premadasa, which hosted the last four ODIs. The pitch is expected to play much the same as in the day-night ODIs. It is the one from the second match not too long ago. There are a few more cracks on it this evening.

A few big names missing from the Sri Lankan squad. But Sanath Jayasuriya and Tillakaratne Dilshan are there, as well as a few fringe players who could really make an impact for further selection. India are Twenty20 world champions, remember, and they have a formidable team.

While we wait for the toss and more, do peruse Sriram Veera's latest tour diary - Tropic Thunder - an evening with Arjuna Ranatunga. Good fun.

I'm Jamie Alter, by the way, and together with Siddhartha Tayla will be handling the commentary. Good evening to all of you, and thanks for tuning in to Cricinfo again. Here's hoping for a good game.

Let me remind you that you can now watch an animated representation of our commentary on Cricinfo 3D. It uses all our scoring data to render a 3d representation of the game, with various camera angles for you to play around with, and it has features such as wagon wheels, pitch maps, and the live scorecard. There are also replays after every wicket and boundary on demand, as well as celebrations for wickets. Oh, and it's free. Click away.

We're just moments away from the toss. Don't stray too far.

Let us head out to the middle, where the two captains are standing with L Siva and the match referee Chris Broad. Dilshan has won the toss and he wants to have a bat. Mahendra Singh Dhoni isn't too perturbed at having to field first. He can't put a finger on what a par score is. Zaheer Khan replaces L Balaji. India have handed Ravindra Jadeja his Twenty20 debut. No Dilhara Lokuhettige, but Chamara Silva, Malinga Bandara and Lasith Malinga are back. Dilshan will not keep wickets, as that role goes to Indika de Saram.

Just about time to start. Looks like a good crowd has gathered and the after-work gang should add to that. The Indians are in a huddle. Good buzz around the ground. Cheer as the Sri Lankan openers emerge.

Sanath Teran Jayasuriya, all of 39 years and 225 days, is ready. What a player. Dilshan is 32. The oldest opening pair in international Twenty20 cricket? In comes Zaheer. Boom boom.

0.1

Khan to Dilshan, no run, good shout first up, and a loose shot from Dilshan, but the ball pitched marginally outside leg stump before cutting in and hitting the back flap, good decision by the umpire

0.2

Khan to Dilshan, no run, pitches on and about off stump and Dilshan pokes it to the off side

0.3

Khan to Dilshan, no run, subtle movement, again pitching on off, and pushed away

0.4

Khan to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, pitches full and swings in, Dilshan's bat comes down late and he gets struck outside leg stump this time, but he's quick to respond to the call for the run off the pads

0.5

Khan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, pitched up outside off stump and he dabs it to the off side, calling immediately for the sharp single and Dilshan responds well to the call

0.6

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, catch that ... no, oh lord what a sloppy attempt! He's dropped in the first over! Zaheer pitches it up on on off stump and Dilshan swings at it loosely, spooning the ball up into the starry night. Irfan Pathan runs in from mid-off and has all the time in the world to settle under a dolly, but he fluffs an easy catch

Ishant Sharma to share the new ball.

1.1

I Sharma to Dilshan, no run, pitches it up just outside off stump and thats pushed to cover

1.2

I Sharma to Dilshan, no run, good ball, hitting the seam and moving and rising past Dilshan

1.3

I Sharma to Dilshan, 4 leg byes, a bit too much movement from Ishant, spraying the ball down the lag side and Dilshan just gets a faint tickle on it and the ball beats Dhoni behind the stumps

1.4

I Sharma to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, thats a much better line, hitting a length and cutting back in off the seam, Dilshan stumbles as he pushes it forward to the off side, another leg bye is what he gets

1.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 wide, too wide of the stumps, Jayasuriya swings and misses

1.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 run, full outside off stump and punched towards extra cover for one

1.6

I Sharma to Dilshan, 1 leg bye, pitches it up outside off stump, the ball swings in and clips a faint inside edge as Dilshan flashes the bat hard at it, without much footwork, and the ball rolls toward gully

Dhoni has operated with one slip so far. The bowlers haven't allowed the openers to really get going.

2.1

Khan to Dilshan, FOUR, another loose ball down the leg side and Dilshan clips very fine

2.2

Khan to Dilshan, 1 run, pitches on a length, middle and leg, and he swings it to midwicket

Dilshan is looking to belt the cover off the ball.

2.3

Khan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, well bowled, but thats four, as Zaheer hits a good length to commit Jayasuriya onto the front foot, pushing at the ball and the result is a leading edge wide of slip

2.4

Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, pitched up outside off stump, pushed toward Yuvraj at extra cover, where Yuvraj collects and has a shy and had he hit Dilshan was a goner

2.5

Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, aha, onto the front foot and looking to thump that into the stands, but the ball pitches on a good length and subtly moves away to beat the big swish from Jayasuriya

2.6

Khan to Jayasuriya, no run, well bowled, pitched up very full, almost in the blockhole, and Jayasuriya bunts it to midwicket and harries out of his crease, yelling at Dilshan, but gets sent back as the fielder swoop in to cut off the ball

End of over 3 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 20/0 (RR: 6.66)

3.2

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, FOUR, not a short ball, but Jayasuriya pulls it with enough power to work it wide of square leg and gets four, he didn't time it well at all but managed to drag it past the fielders

Slip comes out now.

3.3

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, SIX, the thump is here! Thats the Jayasuriya special, carved over cover, just getting a bit of room to free the arms and he sends the ball flat for six, stunning hit that from the legend

3.4

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, no run, again he gets some room but uses too much bottom hand, hitting the ball into the covers where the fielder stops it easily

3.5

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, SIX, hello dolly! Jayasuriya smashes this one off the middle of the bat, just collecting the ball off a length and swings it over midwicket for six more, this is good hitting from the veteran

3.6

I Sharma to Jayasuriya, 1 run, slower ball, gently lobbed up outside leg stump and he picks it, swinging it down to Irfan Pathan on the bounce at deep backward square leg, so he will retain strike

Good over for Sri Lanka, and don't the fans love it? As do the traditionally dressed dancers with traditional drums. Good fun.

End of over 4 (18 runs) Sri Lanka 38/0 (RR: 9.50)

4.1

Khan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, banged in short and he swivels to pull it wide of midwicket for two

4.2

Khan to Jayasuriya, FOUR, pitches it up to try and connect with the yorker but the ball goes adrift and Jayasuriya gets a bit of bat on the low full toss, clipping it wide and there's no fine leg

4.3

Khan to Jayasuriya, 1 run, another attempted full delivery, pitches and gets a little bit of inside edge as Jayasuriya swings it across the line, the ball ricochets and dribble to backward point

Zaheer changes the angle ...

4.4

Khan to Dilshan, FOUR, again he overpitches and Dilshan drives that handsomely past mid-off

4.5

Khan to Dilshan, FOUR, great placement ! Zaheer offers room outside off stump and Dilshan, in a flash, cracks that off the back foot and finds the gap excellently between cover and point

4.6

Khan to Dilshan, no run, again short and wide but this time Dilshan crunches it to the fielder

Great over for Sri Lanka again.

IK Pathan to Dilshan, 2 runs, pitches outside leg stump, Dilshan is cramped and pulls past square leg

5.3

IK Pathan to Dilshan, 1 run, pitches on a length, this one is clipped to midwicket, who collects and flings it back to the nonstriker's end, good backing up from Yuvraj, diving to his left, saves runs

5.4

IK Pathan to Jayasuriya, 2 runs, just back of a length on the stumps, and rising, but Jayasuriya uses the wrists to pull the ball wide of Raina at short midwicket

5.5

IK Pathan to Jayasuriya, OUT, good catch to get rid of Jayasuriya! Irfan pitches it up and Jayasuriya clubs it across the line and almost manages to beat mid-on, but the tall and gangly Ishant Sharma leaps up and intercepts it with one hand

ST Jayasuriya c I Sharma b IK Pathan 33 (28m 17b 3x4 2x6) SR: 194.11

That was well struck and he got some elevation, but Ishant timed his leap to perfection and plucked it out of the air. India will be mighty relieved. Mubarak comes out.

5.6

IK Pathan to Mubarak, no run, pitches on a good length and Mubarak just taps it back to Irfan

8.3

YK Pathan to Mubarak, FOUR, tosses it up, Mubarak tries to swing it away and escapes with a thick inside edge that deviates past the stumps and Dhoni

8.4

YK Pathan to Mubarak, 1 leg bye, flights it up just outside the line of off stump, turns in and beats the bat, they all appeal aggressively but umpire Gamini de Silva reckons the ball would have missed leg stump

8.5

YK Pathan to Dilshan, 1 run, a tad too short and he pulls it over midwicket for one

8.6

YK Pathan to Mubarak, no run, tossed up on a length and Mubarak works it to midwicket

Replays on that appeal show the ball would have hit middle stump. Hmmm, India won't like that.

Fine leg comes up ...

18.5

IK Pathan to Silva, 2 runs, goes for a bouncer, which Silva swats at and gets an edge over Dhoni

18.6

IK Pathan to Silva, no run, slower ball, angling across off a length, Silva has an almighty heave but connects with nuttin' but air

End of over 19 (8 runs) Sri Lanka 168/4 (RR: 8.84)
LPC Silva    20* (15b 2x4 1x6)      IK Pathan    4-0-34-1
K Weeraratne    8* (7b 1x4)      Z Khan    4-0-34-0

We're into the last over. Toot toot. Sri Lanka should aim for 180. In comes Ishant.

19.1

I Sharma to Weeraratne, 1 run, slower delivery, full on the stumps, Weeraratne walks away to the fifth stump and can only get a little inside edge to the on side

19.2

I Sharma to Silva, 1 run, again, very full, Silva kneels down and heaves it to midwicket

So far, so good for India ...

19.3

I Sharma to Weeraratne, no run, full in the blockhole, Weeraratne makes room, hits it back to Ishant

19.4

I Sharma to Weeraratne, 1 run, slower ball ends up a low dipping full toss outside off stump and Weeraratne reaches out and dabs the ball wide of backward point

19.5

I Sharma to Silva, no run, another dot ball! Crafty slower ball from Ishant, full down leg stump, Silva backs away and looks to hit the ball over the field but fails to connect

19.6

I Sharma to Silva, no run, full outside off stump, nearly a yorker, Silva swings and misses

That really is a quality over from Ishant. He took some stick from Dilshan in that previous over but he came back well. Sri Lanka have made a good 171, thanks to Dilshan and Jayasuriya. India's spinners really pegged them back, however.

Do stick around, because India's chase is around the corner. Siddhartha will take you through. Okay bye!

End of over 20 (3 runs) Sri Lanka 171/4
LPC Silva    21* (18b 2x4 1x6)      I Sharma    4-0-40-1
K Weeraratne    10* (10b 1x4)      IK Pathan    4-0-34-1
