New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka, 1st T20I: Sri Lanka v New Zealand at Colombo (RPS), Sep 2, 2009
New Zealand won by 3 runs
2 September 2009 - night match (20-over match)

6.55pm Brendon McCullum and Jesse Ryder strides out. Kulasekara has the new ball.

6.45pm Vettori says he elected to bat because of the record at this wicket, where teams chasing have generally struggled. Sangakkara also says he would have liked to bat first, but thinks its a good pitch and hopes Malinga and Kulasekara can get some early breakthroughs.

This is Siddarth Ravindran providing you the comms, with Raghav on comms. Chandana from Sri Lanka wants to see Farveez Maharoof in the side: "Why is Mahroof being ignored? He scored runs and took wickets for SL A vs Pak A so cant be injured. Being a proven player at international level and a Delhi IPL player there is something going on in him being not even selected to the squad or the Champions trophy team."

6.30pm Toss New Zealand choose to bat. We are still awaiting team news.

Gihan Rupasinghe, the middle-order batsman and part-time legspinner, will debut for Sri Lanka. Malinga and Kulasekara are the quick bowlers, Mendis and Bandara are the frontline spinners. Angelo Mathews returns after missing the second Test due to a hamstring injury.

New Zealand had a hard time in the Tests, rarely getting on top of Sri Lanka, but should be able to pose more of a challenge in the Twenty20s. Plenty of changes from the XI that went down to Sri Lanka in the second Test; Bond is back, the other quicks in the side are Mills and Butler. Peter McGlashan will keep wickets.

6.25pm Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first Twenty20 between Sri Lanka and New Zealand at the R Premadasa Stadium. All eyes will be on Shane Bond as he returns to official international cricket after his dalliance with the Indian Cricket League.

"Not a large crowd gathered, possibly because of the baton charge that happened on spectators here during the last Twenty20," says Cricinfo's own Jamie Alter, who has made his way early to the ground. "Still the ones who have turned up are making their presence felt with trumpets and drums and the bayla dance."

9.00pm The Sri Lankan chase will start in five minutes. No overs lost due to the slight rain interruption.

8.50pm Update: The rain has stopped and the covers are coming off.

New Zealand finish on 141, a decent score but they should have done better in the end, only 33 runs from the last five overs. Sri Lanka's bowling was spot-on, though, only the fifth bowler taking a hammering. Ross Taylor was New Zealand's hero, crashing his way to a 45-ball 60, but there wasn't enough support for him at the other end, only Guptill (29) and Ryder (13) getting into double-digits.

All the attention will now be on Shane Bond, who will be bowling to two of the most explosive batsmen around, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya.

Bad news: It's drizzling in Colombo and the covers are on.
