Angelo Matthews comes on. Rameez Raja says on the TV commentary that Sri Lanka's decision to go in with four seamers was a flawed one.

50.1

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, short of a good length outside off, leapt up but was wide, left alone

50.2

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, short and wide, they have to make him play, he withdraws from a cut shot

50.3

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, too wide again, the batsman, with 20 minutes left for tea, has nothing to do with it

Ali Cheema: "If Yousuf manages to score a 100 in this innings, it will be his 25th in his 82nd test match. Two legends of Pakistan cricket namely Inzamam had 25 tons in 119 tests and Javed Miandad 23 tons in 124 tests. This puts Yousuf's contribution and record in perspective. Excellent stuff!"

52.1

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, short of a length outside off, left alone to the keeper

52.2

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, back of a length again, the batsman has no reason to chase it at this stage, not a good day for Matthews so far

52.3

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, full outside off, much better length but too wide to induce him into playing a shot

Fahad: "At Talal's comment about technique would improve by playing Australia and New Zealand...I would disagree. Technique is improved, infact built, in the domestic level and not at international level. If we are really expecting our players to pick technique through international games, we are starting on the wrong foot. Players should be given more options to play abroad and hence expose them to more varying pitches and playing conditions. Our players lack proper pre-international experience."

54.1

Mathews to Mohammad Yousuf, no run, short of a length outside off, restrains himself from playing the cut

54.2

Mathews to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, hangs his bat out and dabs it wide of point for a single

54.3

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, FOUR, excellent shot, it's short and wide and he ensures it's punished, rocks back and crashes it with a flourish through point for a boundary

Fahad Ali: "To the person that claimed Mohammed Yousuf's contribution was better than the likes of Inzamam and Javed Miandad, id like to say that both Inzamam and Javed played countless innings of brilliance under extreme pressure, whereas Yousuf is yet to truly match this aspect of their legacy. An example is this series, where Yousuf failed to prevent collapses, whereas Javed and Inzy I am sure would have put up a better effort. I think Yousuf bats better where the conditions are there for batting, and where there is little pressure on him. Aside from the year 2006, Yousuf has not stepped up to the plate in pressure situations, in bad conditions or where the team has slumped. "

54.4

Mathews to Khurram Manzoor, no run, full outside off this time, he's not a batsman who favours the drive, while some of the others would have played at it, Manzoor leaves it alone

55.1

Thushara to Khurram Manzoor, no run, bouncer on the off stump, ducks under it easily

55.2

Thushara to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, did well to handle that short ball, just tapped it to deep square leg realising there was a man stationed in the outfield for a miscue

55.3

Thushara to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, Yousuf plays the same shot, but with a bit more style, straight to deep square leg, all along the ground to bring up the 150 partnership

Thushara to Khurram Manzoor, no run, short of a good length on the off, pushed back to the bowler

55.5

55.6

Thushara to Khurram Manzoor, 1 run, straying on the pads, flicked away to deep square leg to end Pakistan's session

A wicketless session - a rarity in this series. Pakistan have seized control at tea on day one, and both batsman will be eyeing their personal milestones as we go into the next session. Jayawardene into the attack, they're trying the part-timers now.

Ok, we are set for the resumption. Can both these guys get to their centuries?

Jibral: "To the person who defended Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq: Ali Cheema only spoke about statistics, there was no comparison. Both Javed Miandad and Inzamam-ul-Haq stand as great figures in Pakistani cricket and of course who can forget Inzamam's thrilling one-man-show innings at Multan Test. Yousuf is a great batsman of his time, let's not compare!"

60.2

Vaas to Khurram Manzoor, no run, good length outside off, moving away a touch, left alone to the keeper

60.3

Vaas to Khurram Manzoor, no run, beaten! First time in a long time, tries to force it off the back foot through cover, it was fuller than the shot demanded, a bit of nerves there in the 90's for Manzoor

60.4

Vaas to Khurram Manzoor, no run, short of a good length on the off, pushed off the back foot to cover

60.5

Vaas to Khurram Manzoor, OUT, gone! Sri Lanka have struck! Manzoor is absolutely distraught as he pokes at a full delivery outside off that leaves him at the last moment, it produces the outside edge and Jayawardene does the rest, taking a good low catch at first slip

Khurram Manzoor c Jayawardene b Vaas 93 (263m 197b 10x4 0x6) SR: 47.20

63.3

Thushara to Mohammad Yousuf, 1 run, OUT, run out, pushes it wide of mid-off to get a quick single and reaches his 7000th run, there's an overthrow towards deep square leg but there's plenty of hesitation out in the middle for the second run, Misbah is already halfway down the pitch and Yousuf has covered too much ground at the other end to make it back for the second run in time, an accurate throw to the keeper and Dilshan clips the bails to find him miles short

Mohammad Yousuf run out 90 (218m 146b 7x4 1x6) SR: 61.64

What a comedy of errors there. An overthrow results in a run-out. Both the set batsmen have missed their centuries, though Yousuf salvaged one landmark.

Thushara into the attack now

83.1

Thushara to Shoaib Malik, 4 byes, slipping down the leg side, Malik misses out on the glance and Dilshan fails to get his hands to it, four byes

This stand is now worth 75, in fairly quick time as well. Just under 20 overs. By the way, England have just won the Lord's Test

83.2

Thushara to Shoaib Malik, no run

83.3

Thushara to Shoaib Malik, no run, short of a good length on middle, gets back and defends it to the bowler

The umpires are having a look at the ball now. It has been changed once today, and we seem to be heading for another one now. Just 15 more minutes to go in the day. The ball apparently was again out of shape.

83.4

Thushara to Shoaib Malik, no run, Dilshan keeps well this time, its down the leg side and he throws himself to his left

83.5

Thushara to Shoaib Malik, OUT, Plumb! Darted back in from the off stump and Malik was rooted to the crease, kept a little low, he played down the wrong line and was caught right in front of middle

Shoaib Malik lbw b Thushara 45 (99m 70b 7x4 0x6) SR: 64.28

A wicket just before stumps. The new ball has done the trick to end a fine, aggressive innings from Malik. However, Thushara has evened things out in the middle, breaking a threatening partnership. Kamran Akmal comes in.

83.6

Thushara to Kamran Akmal, no run, pushing at it from the crease, he expected it to come in but it ended up leaving him, moved away to just beat the outside edge

Three wickets in eight balls has changed this game entirely. It was Pakistan's day until the 83rd over, but its the other team in control now. Kaneria walks in now. Blame the new ball.

Thushara to bowl what could be the last over of the day

85.1

Thushara to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, good length outside off, defended to point from the crease

Kaneria in the hot seat

85.2

Thushara to Danish Kaneria, no run, leaves it be, short of a good length, leaves the right hander, left alone to the keeper

Not the most attractive player, this guy

85.3

Thushara to Danish Kaneria, no run, good length on middle, gets back and defends it to cover

85.4

Thushara to Danish Kaneria, no run, too wide, he needs to make him play, a wasted delivery outside off, why would Kaneria play at that one?

85.5

Thushara to Danish Kaneria, no run, just missed the off stump, Kaneria will tell you he knew where those stumps were, but he didn't look all to certain, left it alone as it leapt off the pitch

85.6

Thushara to Danish Kaneria, 1 run, shortish on leg stump, turned away through square leg for a single, thinks of a second but the batsmen are taking no risks

Pakistan were 203 for 2 with Mohammad Yousuf and Khurram Manzoor looking good to reach their respective centuries. But a nervous Manzoor prodded at one - something he almost never did for the entire duration of his knock - and Yousuf was run out off an overthrow. Despite those two wickets soon after tea, Misbah and Malik steadied proceedings and helped Pakistan recover, and hold on to the advantage. However, the new ball - the one that was changed after the previous one had gone out of shape - brought Sri Lanka back into the game, and finish day one in a position of control. Malik was out to an excellent delivery but Misbah played an extravagant drive when the situation demanded some caution. Three wickets in eight balls turned the game completely, and Kamran Akmal has been left with the responsibility to bat with the tail and restore some stability to the Pakistan innings.

The ball is seaming around a bit but the pitch is still a good one for batting. Join us again tomorrow to see how Pakistan progress. A dramatic final few moments there. Until tomorrow, goodbye.

The Pakistani batsmen are strolling out, the Sri Lankans have taken their positions. Dilshan is not keeping, it's Sangakkara donning the gloves. Dilshan has a bandaged finger. We don't yet know how serious the matter is. All set to start. Kulasekara to Kaneria.

It's Sid Talya again taking you through the second day's play.

Sena: "Sri-Lanka should open the attack this morning with Herath and Kulasekera."

9.50am The pitch didn't take an awful lot of spin yesterday but the overcast conditions in the morning were definitely conducive to pace bowling. We are starting off in bright sunshine this morning, but with the ball still new, the Pakistan tail will have to fight to survive. The visitors will rest their hopes on Kamran Akmal. Here's our first e-mail of the day.

Azmat: "I hope Kamran Akmal repeats his performance in India and then again against the same opposition in Karachi when he won the Test for Pakistan. He can do it."

Intikhab Alam, the Pakistan coach, was upset at the ball changes while Thilan Thushara, the best among the Sri Lankan bowlers yesterday, has expressed satisfaction at having played a full Test series, and delivering for his team.

9.40am local time Welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the second day's play. Pakistan have experienced yet another collapse, losing their last five wickets for 84 runs, and their last three for just eight. The new ball worked wonders for Sri Lanka - remember it was changed after the one taken immediately at the start of the 81st over had gone out of shape - and they'll be hoping it'll help them wrap this innings quickly.

86.1

Kulasekara to Danish Kaneria, no run, appeal for lbw, nipping back in to rap him on the pads as he came forward to defend, just struck him marginally outside the line, encouraging start for the bowler

86.2

Kulasekara to Danish Kaneria, no run, held it back a touch, pitched it on a good length outside off, defended it with a straight bat back to the bowler

86.3

Kulasekara to Danish Kaneria, OUT, trapped in front! An outrageous shot from the batsman, darted back in from a good length outside off, Kaneria had a wild swing at it, hoping to clear midwicket, missed and was rapped in front of middle. Taufel had no doubt about that one, Sri Lanka have struck early

88.6

Kulasekara to Mohammad Amir, no run, bouncer on middle, tries to pull it over square leg, fails to connect

The intention this morning, judging by the way the batsmen have played, was to get quick runs. The plan, sadly for them, has gone awry. Both the batsmen today have fallen trying to play attacking shots, and these two are sticking to the attacking strategy.
