Pakistan in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 1st ODI

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 36 runs

9.50am Not much of a crowd in yet, there's a bit of cloud cover but no threat of rain as of now.

It will be interesting to see what opening combination Pakistan will use, as they haven't picked either Nasir Jamshed or Imran Nazir.

Kingsley Thomas from Sri Lanka is mostly happy with the XI his side have chosen, except for one decision: "The only failure in Sri Lanka's selection committee is having brought in out of form Upul Tharanga and dropping Mahela Udawatte?"

Plenty of Pakistan fans unhappy with Umar Akmal being left out. Irfan from the US: "Does it make sense to include Mohammad Yousuf AND Misbah-ul-Haq? I had hoped they would drop one of them and include Umar Akmal instead."

Umer from Pakistan: "I am perplexed with the selection of Pakistan team. There is no regular opener and now they would have to open with two makeshift openers Kamran Akmal and Fawad Alam. Younus should have been bold enough to replace Misbah and drafted in Imran Nazir."

9.40am Dambulla hasn't been very kind to batsmen in the past, the average score by a team batting first in a day game is 175. Add to that the strong bowling possessed by both sides, this match may not be the run-fest most ODIs are these days.

Ranil Abenayake says on TV that the pitch has a bit of green, and he expects the ball to assist the bowlers early in the morning, though batting is expected to become easier as the match progresses.

9.30am Toss Pakistan choose to bowl. Younis says his decision is based on the past record on this ground, where team's batting second have held sway in the recent past. No Umar Akmal for Pakistan, Abdul Razzaq returns for his first one-dayer in more than two years and Mohammad Aamer will make his debut.

Sri Lanka are bolstered by the return of Thilan Samaraweera, Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga. Upul Tharanga will open the batting with Jayasuriya.

9.20am Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's coverage of the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Pakistan in Dambulla. The previous one-day series between the two sides was a remarkable one - three one-sided games culminating in the embarrassing defeat for Pakistan in Lahore which resulted in Shoaib Malik's sacking.

Roshan from Sri Lanka: "I seriously can't understand why they left out Ajantha Mendis or another specialized spinner for Dambulla. This is kind of a slow track that would def. benefit Spinners. Also, Thilina Kandambi would have been a better buy than Samaraweera as he is more aggressive and suit this type of game better."

That's a score Sri Lanka will be more than happy with, especially as they were 160 for 6 after 43. Muttiah Muralitharan swung his bat around to blaze to 32 off 15 balls, and Angelo Mathews showed great maturity in guiding the innings after the senior batsmen were dismissed by the 34th over.

Pakistan's bowlers were on-song till the Murali-Mathews effort. The spinners proved hard to deal with, Mohammad Aamer made an impressive debut, and Razzaq was accurate and economical on his return. Pakistan's fielding though could do with some improvement.

The conditions for batting usually improve as the day progress in Dambulla, and though 175 is the average score batting first in day games at this ground, I think it's still an even game at the halfway stage.

End of over 50 (9 runs) Sri Lanka 232/9

T Thushara    8* (4b 1x4)      Shahid Afridi    10-1-50-1
