Pakistan in Sri Lanka ODI Series - 3rd ODI

Sri Lanka v Pakistan

Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets (with 21 balls remaining)

10.00am OK friends, time to put feedback comments aside and start typing each delivery, because the players are in the middle. There were plenty of emails flooding in but now I have to watch the action out in the middle or else there won't be any coverage!

Nuwan Kulasekara has the new ball. Nasir Jamshed and Kamran Akmal are opening. Two slips in place.

9.40am The track, according to Ranil Abeynaike, is about a 225-one. There are a few cracks strewn across it. Looks a rather brown strip. Waqar Younis isn't surprised Sangakkara chose to field.

Buddhika: "When we talking about sri lanka's selection commitee, it is shame to say with their choices. Thay have to think more differance between Kandamby and Mahel Udawatte."

Aqeel: "Next time there is a voting for Wonders of the World. A potential ballot should be the non-inclusion of Imran Nazir in the Pakistan squad. A real mystery this is!"

Shane is aghast: "DILHARA FERNANDO........WHY?????"

Sam: "It is baffling to note why Sangakkara steadfastly refuses to give Mahela Udawatta a chance. I don't know what Thilina Kandamby has done above Udawatta to warrant his selection. In my opinion Upul Tharanga should have been dropped not Jayasuriya."

Alex9090 has other views: "Good decision to drop Umar Gul..He's been horrible all tour. Also good decision to stick with nasir..He's far better than imran nazir. Imran nazir s been playing for years and he still plays exactly the way he did all those years ago i.e, he hasn't learned or improved anything!"

9.30am And its time for the toss. Kumar Sangakkara flips, Younis Khan calls heads, but its a tail and Sri Lanka will field. Two changes for the hosts - Jayasuriya has been dropped, Lasith Malinga has been rested, and in their places come Thilina Kandamby and Dilhara Fernando.

"Its a die and do situation," says a beaming Younis. Not sure what he's smiling about. Pakistan are a game away from losing the series. One change for Pakistan, with Umar Gul rested in place of Naved-ul-Hasan. Its his first ODI since the 2007 World Cup. Remember, Naved only recently quit the ICL.

What is killing Jawwad Saeed more is the fact that Pakistan's bowlers are bowling so well just to watch their batsmen squander all the good work.

Ayaz Hyder is peeved: "Wait...no Nazir again? What is going on here? Who's bright idea is it to drop the one consistent pace guy we've had in the recent past and replace him with Rana who aside from his first few matches has been a disaster?"

9.20am Hello and welcome to Cricinfo's live coverage of the third one-day international. It's a lovely morning in Dambulla. Good stuff for a day's cricket. Hope all of you are well and it's a pleasure to have your company. We're not too far from the toss.

Sri Lanka are just a win away from wrapping up the five-match series, after claiming the Tests 2-0. The hosts will undoubtedly be buoyant having won the first two matches rather convincingly at this venue. What has stood out between the two sides has been Sri Lanka's ability to successfully make use of conditions in Dambulla.

If there is a concern for Sri Lanka, it will be the opening combination. Sanath Jayasuriya has failed to click and Upul Tharanga has done nothing to garner much confidence. Conditions are tailormade for Mahela Jayawardene's game and this could be his day. Keep an eye out for him.

Pakistan's coach Intikhab Alam has refused to put the blame for the team's 0-2 predicament on the batting, but its clear to see where Pakistan are messing up. A loss for them will render the remaining matches meaningless.

"It is killing me to watch Pakistan perform like this. I feel today will be another day. Pakistan should not be underestimated because their inconsistency is their strength," says Taufeeq Mian. "Hopefully Imran Nazir will play and Afridi should open with him. These two need to exploit the Powerplay and surprise sri lanka with aggression."

0.1

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, sluggish track, as evident by the lack of timing from Akmal, the ball was short and a bit wide but came on slow and the batsman chopped it to cover

Busy over for Pakistan. I'm Jamie Alter by the way, your commentator.

End of over 1 (7 runs) Pakistan 7/0 (RR: 7.00)
Kamran Akmal    6* (5b 1x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    1-0-7-0

1.3

Thushara to Nasir Jamshed, OUT, edged and taken at first slip! Poor shot from Jamshed, feet not moving as he fishes at a full delivery outside off stump, a real sucker of a shot, and Samaraweera gobbles it up in his lap, that was real catching practice

Nasir Jamshed c Samaraweera b Thushara 1 (6m 3b 0x4 0x6) SR: 33.33

A real tame shot by Jamshed. It was really as if he was the coach handing out catches at practice. Just opened the face and steered it low to first slip. Out comes Younis. He needs some runs. Pressure on Pakistan.

1.6

Thushara to Younis Khan, 1 run, back of a length and it forces Younis onto the back foot, he spars at the ball and it turns toward midwicket, prompting the batsmen to steal a quick single

Success for Thushara in his first over. He's enjoyed himself against Pakistan. Really stepped up into the role of new-ball bowler for Sri Lanka.

Younis Khan    1* (3b)      T Thushara    1-0-4-1

Second slip goes out and a backward square leg moves in.

3.3

Thushara to Younis Khan, 1 run, now his timing improves and he back-cuts the ball for a single

3.4

Thushara to Kamran Akmal, no run, straighter ball, pitching just around leg stump, Akmal defends it back

4.2

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, no run, good length, no room on offer, Akmal gets back and defends solidly

"First wicket is a result of a poor decision of including Nasir instead of Imran Nazir in playing XI. Younis would be regretting it now," says Umair.

4.3

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, 3 runs, ah, streaky shot over cover! Akmal spoons a full and wide ball just over the fingers of Matthews, it was a loose shot but he managed to get enough elevation

4.6

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, no run, pitches on middle and off and seams away ever so gently and Akmal, already committed onto the front foot, pushes at it and squirts the ball to cover

These two have not offered the batsmen much room. Its been a good display so far.

End of over 5 (5 runs) Pakistan 22/1 (RR: 4.40)
Kamran Akmal    12* (15b 1x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    3-0-15-0

6.3

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, no run, straighter ball, Akmal moves across his stumps and drives to midwicket

6.4

Kulasekara to Kamran Akmal, 1 run, slower ball, fullish outside off stump, Akmal picks it and waits and then turns the bat face to steer a single down to third man, very smart batting from him

6.5

Kulasekara to Younis Khan, FOUR, a Michael Vaughan shot, when he had the full services of both legs! Marginally short ball on the stumps and Younis is quick to get up on one leg and tennis-bat the ball wide of midwicket for four

6.6

Kulasekara to Younis Khan, no run, pitched up this time outside off stump, Younis eases into a front-foot drive but gets an inside edge instead

Auwais Ahmed: "For all those bashing Nasir and Younis, I would like to say that Nasir came into this series with and avarage of 40+ and no major failure in his career. The reason he was out of team was beacuse of injury not bad form. So he definitely deserved a chance and was not fair to drop him without playing him. What happened to Nasir has happened so many times to Imaran Nazir as well in his career."

End of over 7 (13 runs) Pakistan 39/1 (RR: 5.57)

Younis Khan    15* (20b 2x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    4-0-28-0

Shoaib Malik c †Sangakkara b Fernando 12 (25m 18b 1x4 0x6) SR: 66.66

Its when he lands the effort ball that Fernando is so dangerous. That ball was on a very good line, probing away, and the bounce undid Malik. There wasn't much movement but it was the lift that worked. Good bowling. Here's Umar Akmal.

21.2

Mathews to Younis Khan, OUT, aha, there's some poor calling and Younis has to go! Slower ball, middle and leg, drifting in, Younis comes forward and on-drives the ball down the ground, he calls for the quick single but its a poor decision as Thushara runs in from mid-on, collects in a flash and knocks down the stumps with Younis well short of the crease

Younis Khan run out 44 (90m 59b 6x4 0x6) SR: 74.57

Not the first time we've seen a Pakistani do that. Just wasn't a run there because the fielder was on the move. Bad judgment from Younis. In walks Fawad Alam. Sri Lanka have hit back.

22.4

Fernando to Umar Akmal, 1 run, edged but it doesn't carry to slip! This one is full and lures Umar onto the front foot, pushing at it with hard hands, the ball kisses the edge but lands in front of Jayawardene and then rolls away behind Sangakkara

25.3

Muralitharan to Umar Akmal, no run, oh thats exceptional work from Jayawardene at slip! Murali tosses it up, slowing the pace, pitches it around middle stump and turns it away from Umar who pushes at it, the ball takes the edge but it flies hard and low to Jayawardene's right, so not a catch but then before the ball can run away Jayawardene flips it back to Sangakkara and they appeal but Steve Davis shakes his head, not going upstairs, and replays indeed show Umar was safely home

They've added 33. Not been easy. Murali has bowled well. Mathews has been tidy. And mind you, these two are rookies. Only Umar's second game and Fawad has been called a limited-overs player not fit for Tests, then he was made to open and got a hundred. So he may be a bit confused.

Umar Akmal    38* (48b 3x4)      KMDN Kulasekara    6-0-43-0

38.1

Kulasekara to Umar Akmal, 2 runs, leans into a half-volley and square-drives through the off side, runs hard to get the second and then gets a third as Sangakarra fumbles and then gives up overthrows as the ball hits Razzaq's feet and ricocheted, Sangakkara protests with the batsman and umpire and doesn't look too pleased ... after a chat they all decided on two

39.6

40.1

Fernando to Umar Akmal, 1 run, slower ball, split-fingered stuff, but too straight and Umar nudges it off his pads for a single that brings up a maiden ODI half-century, and a very good one at that

He's coming off a great personal tour of Australia with Pakistan A and the confidence of those runs on those tracks has showed. Good innings. His brother Kamran applauds from the balcony.

Umar Akmal b Muralitharan 66 (93m 65b 5x4 2x6) SR: 101.53

Murali has been very chatty today. First to Afridi, now to Umar. That was a very good effort from Umar. Came in under pressure, in just his second ODI, and shepherded a sluggish Fawad and then jacked it up to cross his half-century. Very well played. Out comes Naved for his first ODI since the 2007 World Cup.
