Former Northamptonshire batsman John Edward Timms, who served the county firstly as an amateur and then as a professional, died on May 18 at his home in Buckingham. He was 73. Having established a big reputation at Wellingborough School, Jack Timms, born in Silverstone, represented Northants for the first time at 18, in 1925, and was soon being spoken of as a near-certainty for Test cricket. But he failed to bring sufficient consistency to his game, and the height of his achievement was to play in a Test Trial in 1932. Resuming after the war, he extended his career to the end of the 1949 season, by which time his aggregate of runs was past 20,000 (average 25), with 31 centuries. He also acquired 149 wickets with medium-pace bowling, backed by a record of high-quality fielding. He later became professional at Buckingham Golf Club and cricket coach at Bloxham School.
