A flashy middle-order batsman who scores runs with his wrists and bottom hand, Farhaan Behardien is an energetic and astute cricketer. Quick between the wickets, although sometimes untidy, his method is to score quickly and busily. As an agile fielder, particularly at point or in the gully, Behardien was a Jonty Rhodes in the making while playing for the Titans, where he established himself as one of the most reliable players on the South African domestic circuit.

Behardien was talked about as a possibility for higher honours early in his career and made numerous appearances for South Africa A but found himself underrated, especially in the longer form of the game. He was not selected until the end of the 2011-12 season, a period where he made a considerable impact. He averaged over 45.66 in the domestic limited-overs competition and 66.60 in the 20-over version, where he ended as the tournament's fourth-highest run-scorer. He was named the South African T20 player of the year at the 2012 awards, a label that helped push him through the door and into the national side.

He was a part of the XI that was selected to play against India in a one-off T20 in March where he scored an unbeaten 20 off 11 balls to contribute to the total of 219. He was also a member of the squad that competed in the unofficial T20 tri-series in Zimbabwe in June 2012, which also featured Bangladesh. Berhardien only played in two of the five matches but was included in the World T20 squad to play in Sri Lanka.
