There's a beefy bullishness to Lyall Meyer that makes him a pleasure to watch. Whether he's steaming in to bowl right-arm seam or, less convincingly, thumping the bowling from the left-hand side of the crease, drama is invariably moments away. When things go Meyer's way, his contributions are often the difference between his team winning and losing. What Meyer lacks in pure talent he makes up for with heart, guts and self-belief. He adds up to more than the sum of his parts, and he is more than a cricketer - he played hockey for South Africa against France in 2005.
