In a surprise move, the UCBSA have announced that South African
captain Hansie Cronje has withdrawn from the upcoming three match
limited overs international series against Australia. His place
in the squad will be taken by Dave Callaghan, and Shaun Pollock
will act as captain. It is believed that Cronje's withdrawal is
to allow him and the UCBSA to deal with the charges of match
fixing laid against him by the New Delhi police. It is thought
that he feels that his continuing as captain at this time would
put pressure on the team in this challenging series. Cronje is
reportedly in Pretoria meeting with Aziz Phahad (Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs) and government officials.
The first match in the Australia series takes place on Wednesday
(12th April).
